Domestic water supplies as a possible source of infection with Simkania.

OBJECTIVES: Simkania negevensis, a Chlamydia-like microorganism that has been associated with respiratory infections in children and adults, can multiply within free-living amoebae; moreover, it has been detected in domestic water supplies. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is similarity between Simkania organisms found in water and those detected in clinical samples. METHODS: PCR, membrane immunoassay for the detection of Simkania antigen, and isolation in cell culture were used for the detection of S. negevensis in nasopharyngeal wash samples (NPW) of 34 children with pne

A hospital outbreak of Legionella from a contaminated water supply.

The authors performed a cross-sectional epidemiological survey to investigate the source of a hospital Legionella outbreak originating in contaminated water. Water temperature and air humidity were measured around possible contamination sources. A dead-end pipe was found to contain Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. All individuals who acquired legionellosis had spent at least 30 min within 2 m of the contamination source. Among staff, 41 of 71 were exposed, and 31 of these fell ill. All 7 patients exposed to the contaminated water acquired legionellosis. None of the 94 bed-ridden patients fr

Cryptosporidium oocysts in a water supply associated with a cryptosporidiosis outbreak.

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in and around Clitheroe, Lancashire, in northwest England, during March 2000. Fifty-eight cases of diarrhea with Cryptosporidium identified in stool specimens were reported. Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified in samples from the water treatment works as well as domestic taps. Descriptive epidemiology suggested that drinking unboiled tap water in a single water zone was the common factor linking cases. Environmental investigation suggested that contamination with animal feces was the likely source of the outbreak. This outbreak was unusual in that

Trihalomethanes in public water supplies and adverse birth outcomes.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the relation between the level of total trihalomethanes in drinking water and adverse birth outcomes. The study population comprised women residing in an area with municipal surface water who had a singleton birth in Nova Scotia between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1995, or a pregnancy termination for a major fetal anomaly. We found little association between trihalomethane level and the outcomes related to fetal weight or gestational age, but we found an elevated relative risk for stillbirths for average trihalomethane levels during p

Protozoal agents: what are the dangers for the public water supply?

Safe and efficient treatment of drinking water has been one of the major public health advances of the twentieth century. People in developed countries generally take for granted that their water is safe to drink, a luxury the majority of the world's population does not have. The leading cause of infant mortality in the developing world is infectious diarrhea, and the prevalence of diarrheal pathogens is largely influenced by the quality and quantity of clean water available for drinking and washing. Until recently, modern water treatment had all but eliminated these concerns in developed nati

An outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis associated with a community water supply.

In June 1987, an outbreak of acute enteritis occurred over a period of 2 weeks in a small rural community where the potable water supply is unfiltrated and unchlorinated. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 6 patients. A case-control study performed in a local fiberglass shop where workers drink a lot of water, showed an association between the occurrence of enteritis and the consumption of 10 or more 8-ounce glasses of water per day (Odds Ratio = 6, p = 0.04). The attack rate of enteritis was 23.2% (13/56) in that industry where a dose response relationship was also noted (p = 0.05). C. je

Control of hypocupraemia in cattle by addition of copper to water supplies.

Methods for the control of induced or simple hypocupraemia in cattle were tested using a free-choice copper supplement or by adding a soluble copper salt to the water supply, using a specially designed proportioner. In molybdenum induced hypocupraemia the provision of a free-choice supplement containing 2500 mg Cu per kg resulted in only 10 out of 18 of the cows tested having adequate serum copper levels after a five month grazing period. Supplementation of water supplies to a level of 5 mg Cu per litre was effective in raising and maintaining serum copper at normal levels in a herd of low cop

Perchlorate in Water Supplies: Sources, Exposures, and Health Effects.

Perchlorate exposure occurs from ingestion of natural or man-made perchlorate in food or water. Perchlorate is used in a variety of industrial products including missile fuel, fireworks, and fertilizers, and industrial contamination of drinking water supplies has occurred in a number of areas. Perchlorate blocks iodide uptake into the thyroid and decreases the production of thyroid hormone, a critical hormone for metabolism, neurodevelopment, and other physiologic functions. Occupational and clinical dosing studies have not identified clear adverse effects, but may be limited by small sample s

On-plot drinking water supplies and health: A systematic review.

Many studies have found that household access to water supplies near or within the household plot can reduce the probability of diarrhea, trachoma, and other water-related diseases, and it is generally accepted that on-plot water supplies produce health benefits for households. However, the body of research literature has not been analyzed to weigh the evidence supporting this. A systematic review was conducted to investigate the impacts of on-plot water supplies on diarrhea, trachoma, child growth, and water-related diseases, to further examine the relationship between household health and di

An epidemic of gastroenteritis traced to a contaminated public water supply.

Between January 1 and March 15, 1974, approximately 1200 cases of acute gastrointestinal illness occurred in Richmond Heights, Florida, a residential community of 6500 in south Dade County. Over one-third of all families in the area had at least one member affected. The findings of 10 culture-proven cases of shigellosis among those who became ill and clinical signs and symptoms in the others suggest that most of the other cases that were not cultured may have been shigellosis also. Epidemiologic investigation showed that consumption of tap water was associated with illness in the initial cases

Understanding human infectious Cryptosporidium risk in drinking water supply catchments.

Treating drinking water appropriately depends, in part, on the robustness of source water quality risk assessments, however quantifying the proportion of infectious, human pathogenic Cryptosporidium oocysts remains a significant challenge. We analysed 962 source water samples across nine locations to profile the occurrence, rate and timing of infectious, human pathogenic Cryptosporidium in surface waters entering drinking water reservoirs during rainfall-runoff conditions. At the catchment level, average infectivity over the four-year study period reached 18%; however, most locations averaged

Endocrine-disrupting compounds: a review of their challenge to sustainable and safe water supply and water reuse.

The relevance of endocrine-disrupting compounds as potential contaminants of drinking water is reviewed, particularly in the reuse of wastewater. Growing populations and increasing intensification of land and water use for industry and agriculture have increased the need to reclaim wastewater for reuse, including to supplement the drinking water supply. The variety of anthropogenic chemicals that have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors in the environment and the problems arising from their use as human and livestock pharmaceuticals, as agricultural chemicals and in industry are

Microbial water quality improvement associated with transitioning from intermittent to continuous water supply in Nagpur, India.

Nearly half a billion people living in Indian cities receive their drinking water from an intermittent water supply (IWS), which can be associated with degraded water quality and risk of waterborne disease. The municipal water supply in Nagpur, India is transitioning from intermittent to continuous supply in phases. We conducted cross-sectional sampling to compare microbial water quality under IWS and continuous water supply (CWS) in Nagpur. In 2015 and 2017, we collected 146 grab samples and 90 large-volume dead-end ultrafiltration (DEUF) samples (total volume: 6,925 liters). In addition to m

Evidence-based decision-making on water quality in domestic water supply in Malawi, Ecuador, and Brazil.

Scholars and practitioners advocate evidence-based decision-making (EBDM) because facts lead to beneficial outcomes. At the same time, EBDM to reduce risks in water quality is under-studied. We examine types of decision-making by water utilities and government agencies, and the nature and origin of evidence available to them in their work on delivering safe drinking water to households. Using qualitative content analysis, we comparatively analyze water utilities and government agencies in Malawi, Ecuador, and Brazil. The results show that the water utilities perform combinations of decision-ma

[Drinking water data collection and information system in North Rhine-Westphalia. Integration of water supply zones].

To comply with the drinking water regulation act of 2001 and as basis for reports to the European Community, North Rhine-Westphalia has defined water supply zones and collected the necessary data from local health authorities. The software used for drinking water surveillance by the local health authorities and on state level has been adapted to the new requirements. In principle, a supply zone in NRW means a region where the water comes from one water-works. Under certain conditions exceptions are possible. 53 out of 54 local health authorities supplied data about water supply zones up to sum

Reducing drinking water supply chemical contamination: risks from underground storage tanks.

Drinking water supplies are at risk of contamination from a variety of physical, chemical, and biological sources. Ranked among these threats are hazardous material releases from leaking or improperly managed underground storage tanks located at municipal, commercial, and industrial facilities. To reduce human health and environmental risks associated with the subsurface storage of hazardous materials, government agencies have taken a variety of legislative and regulatory actions--which date back more than 25 years and include the establishment of rigorous equipment/technology/operational requ
