Quantitative Evaluation of the Critical Fracture Size for Migration of Mobile Water during Slug Flows in Coalbed Methane Wells.

The distribution of mobile water during slug flows in coalbed methane (CBM) wells directly affects the water pressure propagation path. In this article, the distribution characteristics of gas and water in fractures during slug flow are characterized by gas-liquid microscopic flow experiments. Fluid-structure interaction was adopted to analyze the fracture morphology after deformation under stress. A mathematical model of the critical fracture size for migration of mobile water during slug flows was established through nuclear magnetic resonance tests, contact-angle tests, and the theory of th

Assessing the risk of acute gastrointestinal illness attributable to three enteric pathogens from contaminated private water wells in Ontario.

The province of Ontario compromises the largest groundwater reliant population in Canada serving approximately 1.6 million individuals. Unlike municipal water systems, private well water is not required to meet water quality regulatory standards and thus source maintenance, treatment and testing remains the responsibility of the well owner. Infections associated with private drinking water systems are rarely documented given their typically sporadic nature, thus the human health effects (e.g., acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI)) on consumers remains relatively unknown, representing a signifi

Viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens and fecal markers in wells supplying groundwater to public water systems in Minnesota, USA.

Drinking water supply wells can be contaminated by a broad range of waterborne pathogens. However, groundwater assessments frequently measure microbial indicators or a single pathogen type, which provides a limited characterization of potential health risk. This study assessed contamination of wells by testing for viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens and fecal markers. Wells supplying groundwater to community and noncommunity public water systems in Minnesota, USA (n = 145) were sampled every other month over one or two years and tested using 23 qPCR assays. Eighteen genetic targets were

It's in the water: A qualitative exploration of the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on swimmers' psychological well-being.

Outdoor swimming for both leisure and physical exercise is a fast-growing activity in the United Kingdom. However, research into the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on psychological well-being is limited. Considering the inherent combination of physical activity, leisure, and nature immersion, the notion of outdoor swimming as a potential activity in the social prescribing initiative to enhance psychological well-being was investigated. Guided by Ryff's (1989) six core dimensions of psychological well-being, ten swimmers who frequently swim recreationally in the sea (n = 5) or

An economic evaluation of water birth: the cost-effectiveness of mother well-being.

PURPOSE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of water compared with normal land delivery. METHODS: A retrospective controlled study was conducted over a two-year period in a Northern Italian hospital. The cohort included all the 110 women who completed a water birth and 110 women who had a land birth during the same period. The two groups were compared with respect to labour duration, perineal tear and newborn's health status. The economic evaluation adopted a cost-effectiveness approach in relation to presence/absence of perineal tears. RESULTS: In the water delivery group 58 women (52.7%) exp

Effects on neurobehavioral performance of chronic exposure to chemically contaminated well water.

Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) and other solvents impairs neurobehavioral performance. Use of well water contaminated with TCE and solvents has been associated with excessive symptoms, cancers, birth defects and impaired blink reflex. We extended these observations by measuring the neurophysiological (NPH) and neuropsychological (NPS) status of subjects who used water contaminated with 6 to 500 ppb of TCE for 1 to 25 years. The 170 well-water exposed subjects who resided in southwest Tucson, Arizona overlying the Santa Cruz River aquifer, were compared to 68 referent subjects

Multi-indicator assessment of flood impacts on private well water quality.

Floods pose significant risks to groundwater quality, particularly for households relying on private wells. This study investigates the vulnerability of private wells completed in fractured crystalline bedrock aquifers in a small watershed near Quebec City (Canada), to surface water intrusion and microbiological contamination during and after flood events. The study hypothesis was that flood events promote these processes in vulnerable private wells, with contrasting responses between non-floodplain and floodplain settings. Thirteen wells and three surface water sites were monitored over 1.5 y

Bio-coagulants in potable water treatment: a sustainable comparative assessment of Moringa oleifera and chlorine for well-water disinfection.

Groundwater sources such as hand-dug wells remain a primary source of drinking water in many developing regions but are often compromised by turbidity, hardness, and microbial contamination. Conventional disinfection using chlorine is effective but may introduce chemical residuals and disinfection by-products. This study comparatively evaluated the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera seed kernel extract (a natural bio-coagulant with antimicrobial properties) and chlorine (a chemical disinfectant) in improving the physicochemical and microbiological quality of well water. Well water samples were

A Comprehensive Semi-Analytical Model for Predicting Gas-Water Two-Phase Productivity of Fractured Horizontal Wells in Deep Coalbed Methane Reservoirs.

The development of deep coalbed methane is becoming increasingly important in the energy sector. Faced with deep coal seam conditions, there is a lack of a comprehensive productivity evaluation model that considers the triple media of matrix, cleat fractures, and hydraulic fractures, as well as matrix shrinkage and stress sensitivity. This paper analyzes the geological characteristics and flow mechanisms of coalbed methane (CBM), including two-dimensional flow in cleat fractures, considering stress sensitivity and matrix shrinkage, and one-dimensional flow in hydraulic fractures, also consider

Calculation of water volume in step wells for cyclopicide application and its eco-epidemiological implication: mathematical validation of some theoretical considerations.

Chemical treatment of step wells to kill cyclopoid vectors of guinea worm by temephos (50 per cent E. C.) at the dose of 1 ppm is now an important activity of the guineaworm eradication programme in India. Calculation of correct volume of water in step wells, to determine the exact quantity of temephos to be applied, therefore, deserves adequate attention to prevent over and underdosing of stepwells by the chemical. The prescribed method of calculation of water volume includes two formulae; pi r2h and 1 x b x h (where h = mean depth for uneven bottoms and is a single depth measurement for almo

Disinfection of bore well water with chlorine dioxide/sodium hypochlorite and hydrodynamic cavitation.

The effect of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) on potable water disinfection of chemicals was investigated. The bore well water was introduced into HC set-up to examine the effect of HC alone and combination of HC and chemicals such as chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite. The effect of inlet pressure and geometrical parameters on disinfection was studied using HC alone and the results showed that increasing inlet pressure and using more and bigger holes of orifice plates can result in a higher disinfection rates. When HC was combined with chemicals, HC can reduce the doses of the chemicals an

The risk of Parkinson's disease with exposure to pesticides, farming, well water, and rural living.

We assessed exposure to pesticides, farming, well water use, and rural living as risk factors for Parkinson's disease (PD) in a population-based case-control study consisting of men and women > or = 50 years of age who had primary medical care at Henry Ford Health System in metropolitan Detroit. Enrolled PD patients (n = 144) and control subjects (n = 464) were frequency-matched for age, race, and sex. When adjusted for these variables and smoking status, there was a significant association of occupational exposure to herbicides (odds ratio [OR], 4.10; 95% CI, 1.37, 12.24) and insecticides (OR

Polyacrylamide and Polyacrylamide/Polysaccharide Hydrogels for Well Water Shutoff in High-Temperature Reservoirs.

Polyacrylamide and polyacrylamide/polysaccharide hydrogels exhibiting high structural and mechanical properties, along with acceptable gelation times and gelant viscosity, are proposed for water shutoff applications in high-temperature reservoirs. The obtained polyacrylamide gels demonstrate an elastic modulus 1.6-2.7 times higher than that of the baseline polyacrylamide-resorcinol-paraform-sulfamic acid gel (17.2 Pa), reaching up to 46.3 Pa, while the polyacrylamide/polysaccharide gels surpass it by a factor of 2.3-5.2, reaching up to 89.9 Pa. The gelation time of the polyacrylamide/polysacch

Comprehensive monitoring of drinking well water quality in Seoul metropolitan city, Korea.

In this research, the quality of drinking well waters from 14 districts around Seoul metropolitan city, Korea was assessed by measuring a number of parameters with established guideline (e.g., arsenic, fluoride, nitrate nitrogen, benzene, 1,2-dichloroethene, dichloromethane, copper, and lead) and without such criteria (e.g., hardness, chloride ion, sulfate ion, ammonia nitrogen, aluminum, iron, manganese, and zinc). Physical parameters such as evaporation residue (or total dissolved solids) and turbidity were also measured. The importance of each parameter in well waters was examined in terms

Chromosomal aberration analysis among underground water well workers in Saudi Arabia.

In the absence of permanent rivers or bodies of water, half of the Saudi Arabia domestic water consumption is provided through desalination. The other half is derived from groundwater. Groundwater from the Disi aquifer is already used for drinking water in parts of Jordan and, more extensively, in Saudi Arabia, where it is known as the Saq aquifer. Some of the geological analyses of the host sandstone aquifer rocks show (228)Ra and (226)Ra. The usefulness of chromosomal aberrations analysis as a bioindicator for ionising radiation effect was tested in underground water well workers of Saudi Ar
