Epistaxis: a study of the relationship with weather.

Epistaxis is the commonest ENT emergency requiring hospital admission. A seasonal variation in the admission rate has been documented. The role of weather in accounting for this variation is uncertain. A retrospective review of 686 adult hospital admissions for idiopathic spontaneous epistaxis over a 2-year period in the Greater Glasgow area was carried out. The most significant weather parameter which correlated with monthly admissions was mean monthly temperature (Pearson's correlation coefficient -0.81, P less than 0.01). Admissions increased by over 100% from the warmest to the coldest mon

Warning: Tourniquets Risk Frostbite in Cold Weather.

We sought to better understand the frostbite risk during first-aid tourniquet use by reviewing information relevant to an association between tourniquet use and frostbite. However, there is little information concerning this subject, which may be of increasing importance because future conflicts against near-peer competitors may involve extreme cold weather environments. Historically, clinical frostbite cases with tourniquet use occurred in low frequency but in high severity when leading to limb amputation. The physiologic response of vasoconstriction to cold exposure leads to limb cooling and

Training videos to prevent cold weather injuries.

Cold weather injuries (CWIs) are a challenge during military training, exercises and operations in Arctic conditions. Soldier performance in these challenging conditions depends on protective equipment, knowledge, personal experience, routines, and leadership. Despite the Norwegian Armed Forces' goal of zero freezing cold injuries (FCIs), there has been a persistently high incidence of FCIs among the younger soldiers with an average of 120-150 new FCIs recorded each year. Therefore, an expert working group with representatives from medical, defence and research background was established in 20

Airborne virus transmission under different weather conditions.

The COVID19 infection is known to disseminate through droplets ejected by infected individuals during coughing, sneezing, speaking, and breathing. The spread of the infection and hence its menace depend on how the virus-loaded droplets evolve in space and time with changing environmental conditions. In view of this, we investigate the evolution of the droplets within the purview of the Brownian motion of the evaporating droplets in the air with varying weather conditions under the action of gravity. We track the movement of the droplets until either they gravitationally settle on the ground or

Cold Weather Injuries: Initial Evaluation and Management.

As more people take to extreme sporting activities and hobbies, the sports medicine physician should be proficient in early identification and initial sideline or field management of cold weather injuries. There is significant mortality and morbidity associated with these conditions. The most severe of these are hypothermia and frostbite, which have limited evidence for their field management. Nonfreezing cold injuries and chilblains are much rarer, although appropriate prevention and treatment strategies can be used to minimize harm to athletes. This article will provide the most updated reco

[Do weather and seasons influence our heart?].

There are numerous publications about impact of meteo, seasons and pollution on cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, in particular myocardial infarction and heart failure, have been consistently more frequent during winter in the northern and southern hemisphere. Chronic exposure to air pollution influences the development of atherosclerosis and increases the risk for coronary artery disease. There is a positive association between short-term increase in gaseous components with the risk of hospitalization or death from congestive heart failure. The considerable impact on health ca

Disentangling interactions between atmospheric pollution and weather.

The association between short-term exposure to extreme weather events and health has been well established. In addition, there is a large body of epidemiological literature on the short and long-term effects of ambient exposure to PM2.5. We hypothesize that the health impact associated with exposure to air pollution and weather is larger than the risk estimated based on the health effects of air pollution and weather alone. Not much work has been done to estimate the acute and chronic effects associated with simultaneous exposure to multiple environmental agents such as weather and particulate

Higher Inorganic CO2 Removal Despite Slower Weathering in an Enhanced Weathering Experiment With Steel Slags and Basalt.

The natural process of silicate weathering has inspired two CO2 removal technologies: enhanced weathering and mineral carbonation. Here, in a 15-month mesocosm experiment, both approaches were combined, with the aim of maximising CO2 removal. To do so, pre-carbonated steel slags (basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and argon oxygen decarburisation (AOD) slag) with mineral carbonation rates ranging from 0.04 to 0.13 t CO2/t rock were applied to soil planted with maize. Other treatments included uncarbonated slags and basalt for comparison. Aside from the commonly assessed leachate and soil solid carbona

Weathering the storm: Decreased activity and glucocorticoid levels in response to inclement weather in breeding Columbian ground squirrels.

Inclement weather can rapidly modify the thermal conditions experienced by animals, inducing changes in their behavior, body condition, and stress physiology, and affecting their survival and breeding success. For animals living in variable environments, the extent to which they have adapted to cope with inclement weather is not established, especially for hibernating species with a short active season that are constrained temporally to breed and store energy for subsequent hibernation. We examined behavioral (foraging activity) and physiological (body mass and fecal cortisol metabolites) resp

There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing: climate, weather and active school transportation in Toronto, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Climatic conditions may enable or deter active school transportation in many North American cities, but the topic remains largely overlooked in the existing literature. This study explores the effect of seasonal climate (i.e., fall versus winter) and weekly weather conditions (i.e., temperature, precipitation) on active travelling to school across different built and policy environments. METHODS: Home-to-school trips by 11-12-year-old children in the City of Toronto were examined using data from the 2006 Transportation Tomorrow Survey. Binomial logistic regressions were estimated t

Weather and Seasonality Associations With Vestibular Neuritis.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is an acute vestibular syndrome often attributed to viral or post-viral inflammation, though evidence for seasonal or environmental triggers remains inconsistent. While early studies suggested spring or summer peaks, more recent data have questioned whether VN incidence follows a clear seasonal pattern. Beyond broad seasonality, specific meteorological factors may influence VN occurrence. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate seasonal variation and associations between VN incidence and local weather anomalies in a Mediterranean climate. METHODS: We re

Hot weather and heat extremes: health risks.

Hot ambient conditions and associated heat stress can increase mortality and morbidity, as well as increase adverse pregnancy outcomes and negatively affect mental health. High heat stress can also reduce physical work capacity and motor-cognitive performances, with consequences for productivity, and increase the risk of occupational health problems. Almost half of the global population and more than 1 billion workers are exposed to high heat episodes and about a third of all exposed workers have negative health effects. However, excess deaths and many heat-related health risks are preventable

Effect of weather conditions on acute laryngotracheitis.

The aim of the study was to examine the incidence of croup in the Swansea area and to determine whether meteorological factors have any effect on the incidence of acute laryngotracheitis requiring hospitalization. 447 patients with a diagnosis of acute viral croup were admitted to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Singleton Hospital, Swansea, between January 1st 1980 and December 31st 1984. There was no significant difference between days with and without croup admissions, with respect to barometric pressure or relative humidity. Maximum and minimum temperatures were significantly lower o

Association of cold weather with testicular torsion.

A retrospective study of 46 patients who presented with proved testicular torsion over five years at two Dublin hospitals showed that in 40 cases torsion had occurred when the temperature was under 2 degrees C; the incidence of torsion was higher during the cold months of the year. Both of these findings were statistically significant. These and other results suggest that the ambient temperature may have some role in the incidence and aetiology of testicular torsion.

Cation isotopes trace chemical weathering.

Chemical weathering of rocks and minerals alters the geochemical compositions of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere over time, regulating Earth's surface temperature by consuming atmospheric CO2 so as to sustain our habitable planet. As the most mobile species in the processes of chemical weathering, cations are thought to be robust geochemical tracers of chemical weathering. Over the past decades, numerous tracers have been proposed for monitoring chemical weathering, mainly focusing on the contents and ratios of cations. Because of the difference from the properties of cations, inf
