OBJECTIVE: Cognitive function can decline in adults with moyamoya disease (MMD). Memory, which is an essential but complex and multifaceted function, underpins executive and intellectual functions. However, the relationship between memory and executive or intellectual functions in adults with MMD has not been well studied. The relationship between memory and cerebral blood flow has also not been elucidated. This study investigated correlations between memory, executive function, and intellectual function, and associations between cerebral blood flow and memory in adults with MMD.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset primary dystonia is thought to be a purely motor disorder. Nevertheless, several studies provided evidence that sensory and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to the clinical spectrum of of dystonia, whereas evidence supporting cognitive impairment is still limited.
METHODS: A set of neuropsychological tests was administered to non depressed, non demented patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and healthy control subjects. The test battery included n-Back Task, Wechsler Memory Scale, Trail Making Test version A and B, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

A sample of 473 male patients with pedophilia (assessed by the patients' sexual history and penile response in the laboratory to standardized, erotic stimuli) or other problematic sexual interests or behaviors received brief neuropsychological assessments. Neuropsychological measures included a short form of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised (D. Wechsler, 1981), the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test--Revised (R. H. B. Benedict, D. Schretlen. L. Groninger. & J. Brandt, 1998), the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test--Revised (R. H. B. Benedict, 1997), and the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (S

Function of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF), which connects the anterior temporal and occipital lobes, has not been clearly demonstrated in the human brain. A 47-year-old woman with visual memory disturbance as demonstrated by the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised presented with possible brain tumor in the right temporal lobe. Diffusion tensor imaging showed partial disconnection of the right ILF, indicating that function of the ILF is highly involved in visual memory.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of cognitive functions is an integral part of the evaluation the efficacy of temporal resections. We studied postoperative neuropsychological changes and factors contributing to worse memory outcomes in patients who experienced a significant decline using reliable change indices.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 110 patients in whom we indicated anteromesial temporal resection (AMTR) and 46 patients who underwent selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAHE). We administrated Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, and the Verbal Fluency Te

Working memory was examined in old and young adults using a series of span tasks, including the forward versions of the visual-spatial and digit span tasks from the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, and comparable hand gesture and visual design span tasks. The observation that the young participants performed significantly better on all the tasks except digit span suggested that aging has an impact on some component subsystems of working memory but not others. Analyses of intercorrelations in span performance supports the dissociation among three component subsystems, one for auditory verbal info

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to address a gap in the data on cognitive sex differences in persons living with Parkinson disease (PD). There is some evidence that cognitive dysfunction is more severe in male PD, however data on episodic memory and processing speed is incomplete.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven individuals with a diagnosis of PD were included in this study. Fifty-six of those individuals identified as female. The California Verbal Learning Test 1st edition and the Wechsler Memory Scale 3rd edition were used to evaluate verbal and visuospatial episodic memory and the Wechsle

A 67-year-old, right-handed man was admitted to our hospital because of restricted field of vision. Neurological examination revealed left upper quadrantanopsia on confrontation. Axial and coronal T2 weighted MR images showed an increased signal intensity lesion that involved the right fusiform and lingual gyri. A small lesion was also noted in the white matter of the left cuneate gyrus. He was unable to describe the ground plan of his house or the well-known route he lived. No signs of unilateral spatial neglect, prosopangnosia, apraxia, and aphasia were found in specific tests. Wechsler Adul

OBJECTIVES: A number of commonly used performance validity tests (PVTs) may be prone to high failure rates when used for individuals with severe neurocognitive deficits. This study investigated the validity of 10 PVT scores in justice-involved adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), a neurodevelopmental disability stemming from prenatal alcohol exposure and linked with severe neurocognitive deficits.
METHOD: The sample comprised 80 justice-involved adults (ages 19-40) including 25 with confirmed or possible FASD and 55 where FASD was ruled out. Ten PVT scores were calculated, deri

Topiramate (TPM) is a antiepileptic drug that has multiple mechanisms of action. It is effective as a monotherapy for migraine prophylaxis. Unfortunately, TPM can frequently cause adverse effects, such as cognitive dysfunction. The present study examines the neuropsychological and neurophysiological effects of TPM in 35 consecutive migraine patients above 18years of age. The TPM dose was started at 25mg/day and increased by 25mg/week, until reaching the maximum dose of 50mg twice daily in the fourth week. Patients were evaluated for development of side effects of the medication and for its eff

In recent years there has been an increasing number of cases presenting with a newly recognized multiple systemic disorder, Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS), in the United States. This report documents demographic data and scores from intelligence, memory, neuropsychological, and achievement testing from eight patients, and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) profiles obtained by nine patients, all of whom were referred to a doctoral level neuropsychologist in private practice. Intelligence scores revealed a Full Scale Mean IQ of 90.6, with a Verbal IQ Mean of 92.3, and a

Previous research using the Wechsler scales has identified areas of cognitive weaknesses in children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's syndrome. The current study evaluates cognitive functioning in adolescents and adults diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's syndrome using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) and the Social Perception subtest from the Advanced Clinical Solutions. Deficits in social perception, verbal comprehension, and processing speed were found in the Autism sample. Additionally, they exhibited inconsistent performance on au

Twenty-six children, ages 7-18 years, were tested for possible memory impairments following Reye's syndrome (RS). The RS group was matched to a normal control group on race, age, SES, and estimated IQ. The Wechsler Memory Scale (with delayed recall) and two depth-of-processing tests were administered. For the control group, the mean MQ-IQ difference was +2, while the MQ-IQ difference for the RS group was -14. This proved to be highly significant. Short-term memory and long-term memory scores were significantly lower for the RS group, with verbal memory tasks being most affected.

Patients with fibromyalgia are characterised by having, along with persistent chronic pain, cognitive impairments, mainly in working memory capacity. It has been suggested that abnormalities in fronto-parietal neural circuits might account for this dysfunction. However, limited body of neuroimaging research and mixed or inconsistent results have led to inconclusive evidence. Our investigation aimed to explore the neural links between working memory dysfunction and brain grey matter volume in fibromyalgia using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), considering the influence of pain and affective sympt

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder is associated with cognitive dysfunction in several domains. Medication effect is a potential confounder that can only be statistically controlled in many studies. The cognitive profile in bipolar disorder during remission on maintenance antipsychotics or mood stabilizers medication has not been compared before.
METHODS: We compared the cognitive profile of bipolar disorder patients euthymic for 2 month or more on monotherapy with novel antipsychotics (AP) (n=16), lithium carbonate (Li) (n=25) or valproic acid (VPA; n=26). Forty-two individuals were assessed as

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Growing evidence in animal and human studies suggest that not only hearing loss but also vestibular loss might result in cognitive deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of spatial and nonspatial cognitive deficits in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. As different causes of bilateral vestibulopathy are associated with hearing loss, the objective is to evaluate if these cognitive deficits are due to the vestibular loss of the patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, or to their hearin
