The purpose of this paper is to understand processes contributing to childhood obesity by embedding internalized weight bias (IWB) within an existing psychological theory called self-discrepancy theory. We conceptualize IWB as a misalignment between adolescents' actual self and internalized ideal and ought self-guides shaped by the social environment. This framework explicates emotional and motivational consequences of self-discrepancies, identifies modifiable clinical targets, and supports hypothesis generation and variable selection for nurse scientists. Overall, this new conceptualization o

BACKGROUND: Weight-related stigma toward people living with obesity is widespread in healthcare settings and has been documented among students and professionals across health disciplines. Such stigma may negatively affect communication, clinical decision-making, and quality of care. Educational strategies aimed at addressing weight bias and fostering empathy during the training of health professionals are therefore of growing interest. In recent years, obesity simulation suits have been introduced as experiential learning tools intended to sensitize learners to physical and psychosocial chall

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between weight-based stigmatization, psychological distress, and binge eating behavior in a treatment-seeking obese sample.
METHODS: Ninety-three obese adults completed three questionnaires: 1) Stigmatizing Situations Inventory, 2) Brief Symptoms Inventory, and 3) Binge Eating Questionnaire. Correlational analyses were used to evaluate the association between stigmatizing experiences, psychological distress and binge eating behavior.
RESULTS: Stigmatizing experiences predicted both binge eating behavior (R(2)=.20, p<.001) and overall psychological dist

BACKGROUND: Care experiences of women with obesity are often shaped by weight stigma, negatively affecting health outcomes. Research on this issue within Brazilian healthcare remains limited. This study explored how overweight and obese pregnant and postpartum women perceive the care provided by healthcare teams during prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum periods, with emphasis on experiences of prejudice or discrimination (fatphobia).
METHODS: A qualitative, descriptive, exploratory, and inductive field study was conducted using netnography. Data was collected from the Facebook community 'Ge

OBJECTIVE: To date, most research on perceived discrimination and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has examined racial discrimination although other forms of discrimination may also impact physical and mental health. The current study investigated the relationship between three forms of discrimination (weight, race, and gender) and 3-year incidence of CVD in a large national sample of U.S. adults.
METHODS: 26,992 adults (55.5% women) who participated in the 2001-2002 and 2004-2005 National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) were included in this study. Multiple logist

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Shaped by societal emphasis on thinness, individuals with obesity encounter stereotypes, bias, and prejudice (SBP), which have been documented among healthcare professionals. This study examined obesity-related SBP among dental professionals in an academic setting, hypothesizing patterns similar to healthcare workers.
METHODS: Faculty, staff, graduate students/residents, and students affiliated with the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Fall 2024 were invited. A 37-item Qualtrics survey collected demographic information and assessed obesity-related SBP using the v

The prevalence of obesity in the United States (U.S.), in conjunction with the myriad of detrimental health consequences associated with this disease, justifiably warrants deep concern and characterization as a national health crisis of epidemic proportions. The healthcare journey of patients suffering from and seeking treatment for obesity is, in many ways, more complex than other conditions - weight sigma, leads to negative attitudes, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. A patient seeking care for obesity is often faced with having to prove their condition is not the cause of a behavi

Individuals with obesity in Western societies often face weight-related stigmatization and social exclusion. Recurrent exposure to prejudice and negative social feedback alters one's behavior in future social interactions. In this study, we aimed to investigate autonomic nervous system and affective responses to social interactions in individuals with obesity. Women and men with (n = 56) and without (n = 56) obesity participated in episodes of social inclusion and social exclusion using a virtual ball-tossing game. During the experiment, heart rate was measured and parasympathetic activity (ov

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease that manifests as a steady, slow, progressive increase in body weight. Because of both emotional and physical reasons, obese people resist pursuing healthcare and may be more difficult to care for. In taking a practical approach to skin and wound care, using an interdisciplinary team is valuable. Difficulty in assessment stems from problems such as equipment that is too small or as patient uncooperativeness. Skin/wound problems which are common, yet more difficult to manage for these patients, include pressure ulcers, tracheostomy care (potentially resulting

INTRODUCTION: This study assesses explicit weight bias (EWB) among French medical students and its association with demographic factors and educational tools.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study assessed EWB among 1,635 students from two universities between June and September 2024. The Anti-Fat Attitudes Questionnaire measured three dimensions: dislike, fear of fat, and belief in weight controllability (willpower). Academic and demographic data were collected, with scores adjusted for sex. Two educational tools were evaluated: a podcast addressing weight bias ("Augusta's Oath") and a clinical r

BACKGROUND: Addressing weight bias in registered dietitians should start during their education. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a role-playing exercise utilizing an obesity suit on empathy and weight bias among nutrition science students.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was used with 34 first-year nutrition sciences students. Participants wore an obesity simulation suit and engaged in a standardized scenario illustrating weight bias. Surveys, including the Anti-Fat Attitudes Questionnaire (AFA), the short form of the Fat-Phobia Scale (FPS), Weight Implicit Association Test

BACKGROUND: While evidence suggests psychosocial support benefits well-being, physical health, and weight management, the impact of psychosocial health within digital behavioral weight management programs (compared to traditional in-person models) remains underexplored.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a digital commercial program (DCP) compared to standard nutrition guidance (SNG) on some weight-related psychosocial outcomes: weight-bias internalization (WBI), self-compassion, weight-related quality of life (WQOL), well-being, and body appreciation (BA).

BACKGROUND: Weight stigma, a pervasive public health concern, is characterized by negative attitudes, prejudices, and stereotypes directed towards individuals with larger body sizes. Empirical evidence indicates a significant association between experiencing weight stigma and adverse psychological health outcomes, including body image dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and increased risk of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a third-wave behavioral approach, shows potential in reducing weight stigma by targeting psychological flexibi

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate weight bias within young children's pro-social choices between characters who differed in body size.
METHODS: Seventy-six children aged 4-6 years read stories asking them to choose who they would first help, share with, comfort, and steal from, between a healthy weight and child with overweight. They also selected the one character they would most like to play with. Children's reasoning for these choices was recorded and analysed.
RESULTS: The character with overweight was helped first in only a third of the choices made. Children chose the charact
