CONTEXT: Composed of all or a portion of 13 states, Appalachia is a heterogeneous, economically disadvantaged region of the eastern United States. While mortality from cancer in Appalachia has previously been reported to be elevated, rates of cancer incidence in Appalachia remain unreported.

Rheumatic fever is a poststreptococcal disease that is receiving renewed attention by the medical community. We describe a recent increase in the number of observed cases of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) in West Virginia. This is the fifth report of a recent increase in the incidence of ARF in the Ohio Valley area in the last 4 years. PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is linked to long-term academic and social difficulties. Despite these lasting impacts, state-level prevalence estimates are limited. This study estimated prevalence among early-elementary students in West Virginia who may be at risk for DLD and examined variation by grade, locale, and assessment instrument.
METHOD: A cross-sectional screening battery was administered to 252 students in Grades 1-2 across six Title I schools. Children with Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test-Second Edition Matrices standard scores ≤ 70 were excluded prior to analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The involvement of xylazine, a veterinary drug, in West Virginia (WV) human drug-related deaths was examined.
METHODS: WV drug deaths from 2019 (when xylazine was first identified) to mid-2021. Characteristics including toxicology findings were compared between xylazine and nonxylazine deaths.

In October 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was notified of a cluster of Legionnaires' disease cases in workers at a racetrack facility. La Crosse encephalitis virus (LACV) is a mosquitoborne bunyavirus of the California encephalitis serogroup. During 2003--2007, West Virginia had the greatest number of cases (95) and highest incidence of LACV disease (5.1 cases per 100,000 population) of any state.* The majority of persons infected with LACV either have no symptoms or a mild febrile illness; a limited number experience encephalitis. Naloxone is a common treatment option for the reversal of an opioid overdose. The law regulating naloxone varies from state to state and therefore so does the drug's availability. All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding continues to be a major public health problem in West Virginia because the state leads the nation in the rate of deaths from ATV incidents and has significantly higher death rates than all five of the bordering states. Annually, there are 24 deaths a year in West Virginia due to ATV accidents and thousands of nonfatal injuries. Sporting events using ATVs such as motocross racing have added to the burden of caring for patients who are injured in recreational activities. An epidemiologic profile revealed that approximately 1,000-1,600 persons in West Virginia are living with HIV, and that it is the 5th leading cause of death among persons ages 25-44. Rheumatic fever appeared to decline in the United States in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the last two years, however, there have been multiple reports of the resurgence of rheumatic fever. Two of these reports originated in states that border West Virginia. This study demonstrates that there has been a similar outbreak in the southern part of West Virginia in 1988. In addition, it appears that the incidence of first-attack heart damage is high, and that physicians should maintain their vigilance in diagnosing and treating acute rheumatic fever.
