Uphill Water Transport on a Wettability-Patterned Surface: Experimental and Theoretical Results.

In nature, there exist many functional water-controlling surfaces, such as the water-repellent surface of lotus leaves, the superhydrophobic water-adhesive surface of rose petals, the water-harvesting surface of a beetle's back, and the water-transporting surface of the legs of Ligia exotica. These natural surfaces suggest that surface chemistry and hierarchical structures are essential for controlling the water behavior. We have reported the preparation of superhydrophobic and antireflection silicon nanospike-array structures using self-organized honeycomb-patterned films as three-dimensional

Biocompatible patterning of proteins on wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing.

We develop a simple and biocompatible method of patterning proteins on a wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing. The wettability gradient is produced on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-modified glass substrate through the temperature gradient during thermo-transfer printing. The water contact angle on the PDMS-modified surface is found to gradually increase along the direction of the temperature gradient from a low to a high temperature region. Based on the wettability gradient, the gradual change in the adsorption and immobilization of proteins (cholera toxin B subunit) is a

Prediction of two-phase capillary pressure-saturation relationships in fractional wettability systems.

Capillary pressure/saturation data are often difficult and time consuming to measure, particularly for non-water-wetting porous media. Few capillary pressure/saturation predictive models, however, have been developed or verified for the range of wettability conditions that may be encountered in the natural subsurface. This work presents a new two-phase capillary pressure/saturation model for application to the prediction of primary drainage and imbibition relations in fractional wettability media. This new model is based upon an extension of Leverett scaling theory. Analysis of a series of DNA

Incorporation of Nanoparticles in Coatings on Acrylic Resin: Impact on Wettability and Antifungal Action.

Acrylic resin is widely used in the fabrication of complete dentures, interacting significantly with the intraoral environment. However, complete dentures face challenges such as stability issues and biofilm accumulation. Glaze application is a common method to reduce surface porosity and microbial adhesion, but it also decreases surface wettability, potentially impairing salivary film formation essential for peripheral sealing. This study aimed to incorporate titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles into the glaze applied to thermally activated acrylic resin (TAAR) via spray coating to e

Impact of Replicated Biomimetic Microstructures on the Wettability of Injection-Molded Polymer Surfaces.

This article evaluates the influence of replicated natural structures, produced by micro-machining, on the wettability of plastic parts made from hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer materials under various temperature and pressure conditions. Although many studies have focused on biomimetic surface design, the effect of specific processing parameters on the accurate replication of natural topologies and their resulting wettability has been only partially explored. This study addresses this gap by systematically analyzing the effect of melt temperature and packing pressure on the functional rep

Towards non-wettable neural electrodes for a minimized foreign body reaction.

Functionality of neural implants can be seriously impaired by scarring during the foreign body reaction (FBR). Tailoring of the material-tissue interface is supposed to modulate part of the FBR. Surface structures might physically modulate the foreign body reaction in the acute phase directly after implantation. This work focuses on fabrication and characterization of bioinspired microtextures comprising reentrant cavities with non-wettable surface characteristics. The Selected microstructure patterns were fabricated using direct laser writing and were characterized by means of contact angle m

[Determination of contact angle of pharmaceutical excipients and regulating effect of surfactants on their wettability].

To study the effects of surfactants on wettability of excipients, the contact angles of six types of surfactants on the surface of two common excipients and mixture of three surfactants with excipients were measured using hypsometry method. The results demonstrated that contact angle of water on the surface of excipients was associated with hydrophilcity of excipients. Contact angle was lowered with increase in hydrophilic groups of excipient molecules. The sequence of contact angle from small to large was starch < sodium benzoate < polyvinylpyrrolidone < sodium carboxymethylcellulose < sodium

Effects of oxygen plasma treatment on the surface wettability and dissolution of furosemide compacts.

The plasma irradiation of furosemide (frusemide) was investigated as a possible technique for increasing the dissolution rate of this drug. Oxygen plasma was used to generate oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the compact to increase the wettability of the surface and the dissolution rate of the drug. Compacts of furosemide (300 mg) were produced using a stainless steel die and punch assembly, which was placed into a KBr press. The time of the plasma treatment was varied to assess the effect if any upon the dissolution rate and the wettability of the drug. Dissolution experi

Persistent effects of ozone on needle water loss and wettability in Norway spruce.

Four-year-old, seed-grown trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (8 h daily mean 54 microg O(3) m(-3)) over three consecutive summers (1986-1988). In mid-May 1988, before the third season of fumigation and more than 7 months after exposure to ozone the previous summer had terminated, daily rates of transpiration from intact shoots and water loss from excised needles were measured together with the amount of wax on the needle surface. In mid-July, 92 days after the beginning of the third year of exposure, the wettability of ne

Degradable janus nanofiber dressing with asymmetric wettability for urethral repair and reconstruction.

Urethral wound repair is frequently impaired by urine irritation, bacterial contamination, oxidative stress, and fibrotic remodeling, which together increase the risk of urethral stricture. Herein, a degradable Janus nanofiber dressing with asymmetric wettability was constructed by electrospinning as a multifunctional dressing for promoting urethral inner-wall wound healing. Antibacterial and antioxidant carbon dots (AA-CDs) were first synthesized from ascorbic acid, polyethyleneimine, and glutathione through a one-pot hydrothermal method. The AA-CDs were then incorporated into a hydrophilic l

Heterogeneous Wettability-Based Construction of Two-Phase Interfaces for Underwater Reversible Adhesion.

Underwater smart adhesives with switchable adhesion have attracted significant attention for applications in marine engineering and biomedical fields. However, achieving both robust adhesion and rapid on-demand detachment in aquatic environments remains a critical challenge. Inspired by the diving bell spider, we propose a design strategy based on heterogeneous wettability surfaces to achieve switchable adhesion between two surfaces. The heterogeneous wettability surface design confines the oil phase within air cavities formed in superhydrophobic (lipophilic) regions, thereby creating annular

Intelligence-responsive wettability switch coating on magnesium implants for treating osteoporotic fracture.

Osteoporotic fracture healing is frequently complicated by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species and disrupted bone homeostasis. Biodegradable magnesium alloys are promising orthopedic implants, but rapid degradation in oxidative, acidic osteoporotic microenvironments limits their clinical application. In this study, we develop a reactive oxygen species-responsive hydrogel coating of tannic acid and gelatin methacryloyl on magnesium implants via a metal-phenolic network. We show that this firmly adhering coating significantly decelerates magnesium degradation while scavenging reactive oxy

Tunable Control of the Hydrophilicity and Wettability of Conjugated Polymers by a Postpolymerization Modification Approach.

A facile method to prepare hydrophilic polymers by a postpolymerization nucleophillic aromatic substitution reaction of fluoride on an emissive conjugated polymer (CP) backbone is reported. Quantitative functionalization by a series of monofunctionalized ethylene glycol oligomers, from dimer to hexamer, as well as with high molecular weight polyethylene glycol is demonstrated. The length of the ethylene glycol sidechains is shown to have a direct impact on the surface wettability of the polymer, as well as its solubility in polar solvents. However, the energetics and band gap of the CPs remain

Dual role of outer epicuticular lipids in determining the wettability of dragonfly wings.

Numerous natural surfaces possess superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties that would be extremely beneficial when applied in industry. Dragonfly wings are one example of such surfaces, and while their general surface structure is known, their precise chemical composition is not. Here, the epicuticular lipids of dragonfly wing membranes were characterized to investigate their significance in contributing to self-cleaning and superhydrophobic properties. After just 10s of lipid extraction using chloroform, the water contact angles exhibited by the wings decreased below the accepted thre

Liquid penetration as a method of assessing the wettability and surface energy of pharmaceutical powders.

The use of a liquid penetration technique to assess the wettability and surface energy of a series of barbiturates, including the use of bicomponent systems, has been critically evaluated. Values of apparent contact angles (theta) obtained using the Washburn relationship (1921) and the Carli & Simioni correction (1979) were found to reflect the practically derived wettability of the powders. Values of gamma c obtained from modified Zisman plots and from Neumann's equation of state did not realistically describe the surface energies of the powders. The nature of alcohol-water mixtures has been

Understanding mineral and metal surface wettability heterogeneity through bubble contact angle distribution analysis.

HYPOTHESIS: Surface wettability is commonly characterized using single or average contact angle measurements. However, for chemically and physically heterogeneous solid-liquid interfaces, particularly under sub-monolayer adlayer conditions, average contact angles may not adequately represent spatial variations in adsorption-induced hydrophobicity. We hypothesize that measuring, mapping, and analyzing the variation of contact angles across a representative surface, reported as a distribution of contact angles, provides a more meaningful descriptor of adsorption-induced wettability heterogeneity

Wettability Regulated Two-Phase Flow of Supercritical CO2 and Water in Confined Nanochannels.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has emerged as a promising agent in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) due to its ability to reduce interfacial tension and enhance oil mobility in reservoirs. Water is ubiquitous in oil reservoirs, yet the underlying mechanisms governing scCO2 transport in the presence of water within nanoscale channels remain inadequately understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations combined with analytical models, this study explores the two-phase flow behavior of scCO2 and water in confined nanochannels, emphasizing the effects of water saturation (Sw) and channel wettabil
