Hedgehog (Hh) is an evolutionarily conserved signaling protein that has essential roles in animal development and homeostasis. We investigated Hh signaling in the region of the Drosophila wing imaginal disc that produces Hh and is near the tracheal air sac primordium (ASP) and myoblasts. Hh distributes in concentration gradients in the anterior compartment of the wing disc, ASP and myoblasts, and activates genes in each tissue. Some targets of Hh signal transduction are common to the disc, ASP and myoblasts, whereas others are tissue-specific. Signaling in the three tissues is cytoneme-mediate

This study was carried out to estimate genetic parameters for morphology, body weight, and tonic immobility traits in the red-winged tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens). Information on 690 birds was used and genetic parameters were estimated using Bayesian methods under a multi-trait animal model. The following traits were considered in this study: tarsal length (TL), bill length (BL), wing length (WL), head width (HW), bill width (BW), mature weight (MW), weight at 90 days (W90), and tonic immobility (TI). The heritability showed estimates between 0.15 for wing length and 0.56 for bill length. Pos

BACKGROUND: The purpose of orthognathic surgery is to correct facial deformity and dental malocclusion and to obtain normal orofacial function. However, there are controversies of whether orthognathic surgery might have any negative influence on temporomandibular (TM) joint. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of orthognathic surgery on articular disc position and temporomandibular joint symptoms of skeletal CI II patients by means of magnetic resonance imaging.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this purpose, fifteen patients with skeletal CI II malocclusion, aged 19-32 years (mea

Feather mites are permanent ectosymbionts that occupy discrete feather microhabitats; however, little is known about how associations between dorsal and ventral taxa vary along continuous wing gradients. We examined feather-level spatial abundance associations between dorsal and ventral feather mites along the proximodistal axis of the wing in the Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope) via nonlinear mixed-effects models. Dorsal feather mites (Trouessartia calliope) were largely absent from distal outer remiges (flight feathers) and increased toward proximal body-side remiges, whereas ventral

This study presents the first detailed histological description of wing primordium development in Mecoptera and demonstrates a late-forming, non-invaginated developmental mode lacking a morphologically distinct peripodial epithelium. Wing primordium development in holometabolous insects follows two major modes, early-forming and late-forming. Late-forming primordia are epidermal cell populations that remain integrated within the larval epithelium, contribute to cuticle production during each larval molt, and begin morphogenesis only in the final instar. The order Mecoptera remains among the le

Pliny the Elder describes in his 'Natural History' XXIX 86 a species of spider dangerous for human beings and looking like a hornet without wings. This description corresponds to Solipugae of the genus Karschia, living in arid areas of Central Asia. These animals are not venomous but can cause harm by their powerful bite and in some cases by a following inflammation of the wound. On the contrary, an animal called "wasp-like", mentioned by Nikander of Kolophon ('Theriaca', v. 738-746) and often regarded to be the same creature, seems to be a typical venomous spider which causes an acute intoxic

Rodenticides are widely used around the world since the 1950s. In Taiwan, an anti-rodent operation initiated 1977 and became a regular action annually implied by the government until 2014. This anti-rodent operation caused many animals of non-target species being exposed by rodenticides and became an environmental issue. The Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a small-sized diurnal raptor widely distributed in the Old World continent. Since 2000, a newly colonized population of this species occurred in Taiwan. Although the Black-winged Kites may suffer from the threats of rodenticides, the

Animals respond to changes in power requirements during locomotion by modulating the intensity of recruitment of their propulsive musculature, but many questions concerning how muscle recruitment varies with speed across modes of locomotion remain unanswered. We measured normalized average burst EMG (aEMG) for pectoralis major and biceps brachii at different flight speeds in two relatively distantly related bat species: the aerial insectivore Eptesicus fuscus, and the primarily fruit-eating Carollia perspicillata These ecologically distinct species employ different flight behaviors but possess

New specimens and a re-examination of their holotypes have clarified the status of six nominal species of the extinct membracoid family Archijassidae from the Late Triassic (Norian) fossil insect localities at Mount Crosby, Denmark Hill and Dinmore in south-eastern Queensland. The 57 available tegmina ostensibly attributable to one or other of the six species are remarkably similar in venation and only vary in size and to a lesser extent in shape. The latter character varies subtlety across a continuum and is of no use in species definition. The tegmina, however, fall into two distinct size gr

The major blood vessels of the ostrich wing were studied by dissection of the wings of 8 ostriches. The axillary artery entered the caudo-ventral aspect of the wing and divided into the brachial and deep brachial arteries. The deep brachial artery gave rise to the radial and ulnar collateral arteries which supplied the caudodorsal aspect of the brachium. The brachial artery divided in the cubital fossa into the smaller ulnar and large radial arteries. The ulnar artery supplied the cranio-ventral aspect of the antebrachium and manus, and the radial artery the caudo-ventral and dorsal aspects of

BACKGROUND: Insects comprise one of Earth's most diverse animal groups, but the adaptive capacity of most species, especially those with weak genetic structure, remains understudied. Psolodesmus mandarinus is an endemic damselfly in Taiwan, where its populations show latitudinal variation in wing traits despite limited genetic differentiation in mitochondrial and ribosomal sequences. We hypothesised that weak genome-wide structure may obscure the signals of local adaptation driven by environmental variation. To test this, we integrated genome-wide SNPs, phenotypic measurements, environmental a

Insects with damaged wings can still maintain flight and perform complex maneuvers, highlighting their remarkable flight adaptability. Compared with the study on intact insects' flight stability, research on the flight stability of wing-damaged insects remains limited. Building on our previous measured data on wing kinematics of wing-damaged droneflies (Eristalis tenax), this work further investigates the impact of unilateral wing damage on insect flight stability. Mainly addressing two key questions: (1) whether the longitudinal and lateral stability of insects with asymmetric wing motion can

The distinctive orange and black wings of monarchs (Danaus plexippus) have long been known to advertise their bitter taste and toxicity to potential predators. Recent work also showed that both the orange and black coloration of this species can vary in response to individual-level and environmental factors. Here we examine the relationship between wing color and flight performance in captive-reared monarchs using a tethered flight mill apparatus to quantify butterfly flight speed, duration and distance. In three different experiments (totaling 121 individuals) we used image analysis to measur

For animals that synthesise their chemical compounds de novo, resources, particularly proteins, can influence investment in chemical defences and nitrogen-based wing colouration such as melanin. Competing for the same resources often leads to trade-offs in resource allocation. We manipulated protein availability in the larval diet of the wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, to test how early life resource availability influences relevant life history traits, melanin production and chemical defences. We expected higher dietary protein to result in more effective chemical defences in adult moths

The blue-winged teal (Spatula discors) is a recreationally and ecologically important dabbling duck species in North America. Transcriptomic data of this species can be used in public and animal health studies given its role as a natural reservoir host for avian influenza, which can be a zoonotic disease of high concern. Ileum and bursa of Fabricius tissues were sampled from six captive raised blue-winged teals, four of the six who were experimentally infected with low-pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N9. RNAseq data were generated from extracted total mRNA from each tissue and pooled to cre

BACKGROUND: Rapid transportation of neurosurgical patients, particularly those with acute spinal trauma, is critical due to the direct association between total prehospital time and mortality. While existing aeromedical guidelines focus primarily on helicopter (rotor-wing) transport, there is limited evidence consolidating the effects of fixed-wing aircraft transport, which exposes patients to unique physiological stressors due to higher operational altitudes.
METHODS: Using a recognised framework for scoping reviews, a European-based research team conducted biweekly discussions to ensure a c

The European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) is a long-distance migrant that also uses slow, hovering, flight as part of its feeding ecology. This reflects complex tradeoffs in aerodynamic mechanisms and makes studies of their flight performance, in relation to their wing shape, particularly interesting. Here we reveal, using wake visualization and aerodynamic measurements of nightjars flying in a wind tunnel, a unique double tip vortex phenomenon at cruising speeds. This correlates with reduced span efficiency at these flight speeds, suggesting relatively high costs of generating lift. Our i

A method for registration of the sniffing component of the search behavior in rabbits subjected to food deprivation is suggested. Pulsed activities of the muscles controlling the movements of the wings of the nostrils and the pressure in the nasal cavity are recorded simultaneously. The method allows accurate artifact-free registration of the time and amplitude parameters of the sniffing component of the search behavior. The registration is realized on an MP150 programmed complex, consisting of EMG 100C biopotential amplifiers and Samba 202 intracavitary pressure recorder. The method allows sy
