Brief report: cognitive flexibility and focused attention in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism as measured on the computerized version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

The aim of the present study was to assess mental flexibility and set maintenance of a group of individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) or high-functioning autism (HFA) (N = 13; mean age 16,4), as compared with a matched group of typically developing children and adolescents (N = 13; mean age 15,6) on the computerized version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). The participants in the AS/HFA group performed less well than the controls on all categories of the WCST, but the differences did not reach conventional statistical significance on most categories of the WCST. On the category fai

Impaired cognitive flexibility and disrupted cognitive cerebellum in degenerative cerebellar ataxias.

There is a clinically unmet need for a neuropsychological tool that reflects the pathophysiology of cognitive dysfunction in cerebellar degeneration. We investigated cognitive flexibility in degenerative cerebellar ataxia patients and aim to identify the pathophysiological correlates of cognitive dysfunction in relation to cerebellar cognitive circuits. We prospectively enrolled degenerative cerebellar ataxia patients with age-matched healthy controls who underwent 3 T 3D and resting-state functional MRI. All 56 participants were evaluated with the Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia and

Selective, sustained, and shift in attention in patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia.

Attentional deficits are a prominent aspect of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The present study was designed to investigate attention deficit in a group of patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. According to the segmental set theory suggested by Hogarty and Flesher, three aspects of attention problems, selective, sustained, and shift in attention, were studied. The 30 patients hospitalized on three psychiatric wards at Shiraz and Isfahan and 30 normal healthy subjects matched for age, sex, and years of education were administered a computerized Continuous Performance Test, Stroop C

White matter abnormalities and executive function in children with very low birth weight.

The aim of this study was to investigate any structural-functional relationship between changes in white matter microstructure seen on diffusion tensor imaging and results of an executive function test in adolescents with very low birth weight (VLBW). Thirty-four VLBW adolescents were examined at 15 years of age. Executive function was assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Diffusion tensor imaging scans were performed at 1.5 T for calculation of individual fractional anisotropy maps. Through a voxel-wise regression analysis, correlations were found between the results on Wisconsin Card

Neuropsychological correlates of obsessive characteristics in Tourette syndrome.

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive (OC) characteristics and performance on a test sensitive to frontal lobe function (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) was examined in a sample of 100 patients between the ages of 6 and 18 years. All patients met DSM-III-R criteria for Tourette syndrome (TS), confirmed by a neurologist or psychiatrist. Performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test was correlated with ratings of OC characteristics, but not with other TS symptoms. This relationship was maintained even when Full-Scale IQ and the total number of Tourette symptoms were controlled. The effect

Effects of quetiapine on cognitive functioning in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In recent years, growing evidence supports the efficacy of antipsychotic addition to serotonin reuptake inhibitors in patients with treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder. This study is the first to investigate the effects of antipsychotic addition on cognitive functioning in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Cognitive functioning was evaluated at baseline and at endpoint of an 8-week double-blind, placebo-controlled quetiapine addition trial. Neurocognitive performance was compared between the placebo and quetiapine group and between responders and nonresponders. The neurops

Card sorting performance and ADHD symptomatology in children and adolescents with tourette syndrome.

Children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome (TS) do not have a characteristic neuropsychological profile. Performance on complex cognitive tasks, particularly those associated with executive functioning (EF), has been variable and sometimes contradictory. The high rate of comorbidity of TS with disorders, especially Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), may account for such variability. A group of 57 individuals with TS, aged 8 - 16, was examined on a component of executive functioning in relation to comorbid symptomatology of ADHD. Each participant was evaluated using two EF me

Executive dysfunction as a risk marker for substance abuse: the role of impulsive personality traits.

The relationships between family history of substance use, executive functions, impaired decision making, and current substance dependence are the focus of this study. Thirty-eight substance-dependent inpatients were compared with 30 community controls on performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail-Making Test-B, the Stroop Color Word Test, the Wais-II Digit Span, and the Iowa Gambling Task. Recent alcohol use, depressive symptoms, and impulsivity were also assessed. As hypothesized, individuals with substance dependence exhibited poorer executive functioning. Family history status w

Unveiling the Aha! moment: A computational account of insight in active inference.

Insight, also referred to as the "Aha!" moment, is a distinctive cognitive phenomenon in which an idea or solution to a problem suddenly emerges into consciousness. Although the literature describes it extensively, the nature of its distinctive cognitive and affective mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this paper, we formalize a computational approach to insight grounded in the active inference framework. By modeling insight as Bayesian model reduction in a modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Task, we show that the model can reproduce a broader computational profile associated with insight,

Executive functions in dyslexia.

This study focused on executive functions in dyslexia. A group of 43 heavily-affected young dyslexics, divided into two groups based on the results of a receptive language test, and 20 non-dyslexic controls, were tested with a Dichotic Listening Test, the Stroop Color Word Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. The dyslexic subjects demonstrated significant impairment on all tasks, but with different patterns of impairment according to the subgrouping. The subgroups were equally impaired on the Dichotic Listening Test, but differed on the Stroop and the Wisconsin Tests. The data support a h

Personality, clinical features, and test instructions can affect executive functions in Eating Disorders.

Cognitive deficits in Eating Disorders have been related to the executive function domain. Yet, to date, only few works investigated the relationship between neuropsychological and clinical issues, and these studies were separately conducted either on Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Bulimia Nervosa (BN). In this study, three groups of AN, BN and matched controls were administered the Trail Making Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and the Hayling Sentence Completion Test, in addition to personality and clinical assessments (Temperament and Character Inventory, SCL-90-R, EDI-2). Results from AN in

Neuropsychological assessment of impulsive behavior in abstinent alcohol-dependent subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Poor impulse control is thought to be one of the characteristics of alcohol addiction. The capacity to remain abstinent may be linked to cognitive bias related to three dimensions of impulsivity: motor, non-planning, and attentional impulsivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neuropsychological profile related to these impulsivity dimensions in alcohol-dependent patients within 15 -120 days of abstinence. METHOD: We compared 31 alcohol-dependent patients to 30 matched healthy controls regarding their performances on the Continuous Performance Task, the Iowa Gambling Test
