Dynamic interaction between the cerebrum and the cerebellum during visual word processing.

Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between the cerebellum and reading. Yet, the specific contribution of the cerebellum to reading and its interaction with the cerebrum remain elusive. To address these issues, we combined dynamic brain state analysis with large-scale network analysis to examine the imaging data gathered from the reading tasks (i.e., orthographic, phonological, and semantic tasks) and the resting period. Our analysis revealed three dynamic brain states. The first state (DFS1) exhibited a higher ratio and a longer duration in all tasks, indicating its involvemen

Typical and atypical neural mechanisms support spoken word processing in Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is known to affect expressive and receptive communication abilities. This study examined individual differences in neural mechanisms underlying speech processing in children with AS (n = 24, M age = 10.01 years) and typical development (n = 30, M age = 10.82 years) using auditory event-related potentials during passive listening to common English words and novel pseudowords. A group of adults with AS (n = 7, M = 31.78 years) provided data about the upper developmental range. The typically developing group demonstrated the expected more negative amplitudes in response to

Lateralization of word and face processing in developmental dyslexia and developmental prosopagnosia.

In right-handed adults, face processing is lateralized to the right hemisphere and visual word processing to the left hemisphere. According to the many-to-many account (MTMA) of functional cerebral organization this lateralization pattern is partly dependent on the acquisition of literacy. Hence, the MTMA predicts that: (i) processing of both words and faces should show no or at least less lateralization in individuals with developmental dyslexia compared with controls, and (ii) lateralization in word processing should be normal in individuals with developmental prosopagnosia whereas lateraliz

Cerebellar function in children with and without dyslexia during single word processing.

The cerebellar deficit hypothesis of dyslexia posits that dysfunction of the cerebellum is the underlying cause for reading difficulties observed in this common learning disability. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a single word processing task to test for differences in activity and connectivity in children with (n = 23) and without (n = 23) dyslexia. We found cerebellar activity in the control group when word processing was compared to fixation, but not when it was compared to the active baseline task designed to reveal activity specific to reading. Dissociating frequency and animacy effects in visual word processing: An fMRI study.

In an fMRI investigation of the neural representation of word frequency and animacy, participants read high- and low-frequency words within living and nonliving semantic categories. Both temporal (left fusiform gyrus) and parietal (left supramarginal gyrus) activation patterns differentiated between animal and tool words after controlling for frequency. Activation patterns in a smaller ventral temporal region, a subset of the voxels identified in the animacy contrast, differentiated between high- and low-frequency words after controlling for animacy. Activation patterns in the larger temporal

Four Functionally Distinct Regions in the Left Supramarginal Gyrus Support Word Processing.

We used fMRI in 85 healthy participants to investigate whether different parts of the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) are involved in processing phonological inputs and outputs. The experiment involved 2 tasks (speech production (SP) and one-back (OB) matching) on 8 different types of stimuli that systematically varied the demands on sensory processing (visual vs. auditory), sublexical phonological input (words and pseudowords vs. nonverbal stimuli), and semantic content (words and objects vs. pseudowords and meaningless baseline stimuli). In ventral SMG, we found an anterior subregion associat

Diverging receptive and expressive word processing mechanisms in a deep dyslexic reader.

We report on KJ, a patient with acquired dyslexia due to cerebral artery infarction. He represents an unusually clear case of an "output" deep dyslexic reader, with a distinct pattern of pure semantic reading. According to current neuropsychological models of reading, the severity of this condition is directly related to the degree of impairment in semantic and phonological representations and the resulting imbalance in the interaction between the two word processing pathways. The present work sought to examine whether an innovative eye movement supported intervention combining lexical and seg

Evidence for developmental changes in the visual word processing network beyond adolescence.

Late development of specialization in the visual word processing system was examined using event-related potentials (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of word and symbol string processing in groups of adolescents (15.2-17.3 years) and adults (19.8-30.8 years). We focused our ERP analyses on fast visual activity: the occipital P1 (82-131 ms) modulated by physical stimulus characteristics and the occipito-temporal N1 (132-256 ms) reflecting visual tuning for print. Our fMRI analyses concentrated on basal occipito-temporal activations in the visual word form area VWFA. For wor

Developmental dyslexia: ERP correlates of anomalous phonological processing during spoken word recognition.

Ample evidence suggests that developmental dyslexia results from a phonological deficit that may not be reducible to a low-level auditory deficit. Yet, on-line phonological processing (in)capacities in dyslexics remain virtually unexplored, as studies have typically focused on either meta-phonological awareness tasks or, at the other extreme, basic perceptual tasks. The present study investigates event-related potential (ERP) correlates of implicit phonological processing during the recognition of spoken words in dyslexic and normally reading children (7-10 years). We examined general ERP morp

Processing syntactic functions of words in normal and dyslexic readers.

Readers with dyslexia were compared with normal readers for the ability to identify the grammatical function of words in the course of sentence processing by means of electrophysiological measures along with behavior measures. Participants were 18 dyslexic and 18 normally reading, native Hebrew-speaking male university students, aged 18 to 27 years. Obtained results confirmed the hypothesis (Leikin & Breznitz, 1999) that Hebrew readers used lexical-morphological properties of words to identify their grammatical roles. However, the morphologically based strategy acquired full expression only in

The processing of multiple letters and multiple words in deaf adults.

Readers utilize both foveal and parafoveal information to recognize letters and words effectively. In the fovea, the ability to identify letters is maximized, resulting in greater accuracy for letters that are directly fixated upon. Conversely, the accuracy of letter identification diminishes in the parafovea. Notably, letters at the beginning and end of words are often recognized more accurately than those in the middle, which yields a W-shaped function in identification accuracy and an M-shaped function in response times. Building upon these observations, word identification rates are higher

[A test of a hypothesis of automatic phonological processing of Kanji words].

This paper aims to examine a hypothesis that phonological processing should occur in Japanese Kanji words as well as in Kana words, but automatic in Kanji words. In Experiment 1, subjects performed concurrent articulation or finger tapping during a semantic processing task of Kana words with 2 to 4 phonemes, for which phonological processing should be indispensable. Concurrent articulation was found to eliminate the phoneme number effect found in the control condition, but finger tapping was not. This result indicates the effectiveness of concurrent articulation in articulatory suppression. In

Processing of different word list lengths during encoding and retrieval in Broca's area.

Broca's area is a region of the brain involved in the processing of verbal information, including memory encoding and retrieval. This study examined differences in the neural correlates of encoding and retrieval in Broca's area using word lists of varying lengths. Differences in the encoding and retrieval processes were assessed using word lists of different lengths: short (2-29), medium (30-59), and long (60-225) Latvian language nouns. In total, 23 participants completed the memory task. Each participant performed memory tasks with two short lists, two medium lists, and one long list, with v

Interdependency in lateralization of written word and face processing in right-handed individuals.

It has been suggested that the right hemisphere lateralization typically observed for face processing may depend on lateralization of written word processing to the left hemisphere; a pattern referred to as the causal complementary principle of lateralization. According to a strong version of this principle, a correlation should be found between the degree of left and right hemisphere lateralization for word and face processing respectively. This has been observed in two studies, but only for left-handed individuals. The present study tested whether a similar lateralization pattern could be fo

Neurophysiological correlates of word processing deficits in isolated reading and isolated spelling disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In consistent orthographies, isolated reading disorders (iRD) and isolated spelling disorders (iSD) are nearly as common as combined reading-spelling disorders (cRSD). However, the exact nature of the underlying word processing deficits in isolated versus combined literacy deficits are not well understood yet. METHODS: We applied a phonological lexical decision task (including words, pseudohomophones, legal and illegal pseudowords) during ERP recording to investigate the neurophysiological correlates of lexical and sublexical word-processing in children with iRD, iSD and cRSD compa

Decreased sensitivity to phonemic mismatch in spoken word processing in adult developmental dyslexia.

Initial lexical activation in typical populations is a direct reflection of the goodness of fit between the presented stimulus and the intended target. In this study, lexical activation was investigated upon presentation of polysyllabic pseudowords (such as procodile for crocodile) for the atypical population of dyslexic adults to see to what extent mismatching phonemic information affects lexical activation in the face of overwhelming support for one specific lexical candidate. Results of an auditory lexical decision task showed that sensitivity to phonemic mismatch was less in the dyslexic p

Distinct unimodal and multimodal regions for word processing in the left temporal cortex.

How are word recognition circuits organized in the left temporal lobe? We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to dissect cortical word-processing circuits using three diagnostic criteria: the capacity of an area (1) to respond to words in a single modality (visual or auditory) or in both modalities, (2) to modulate its response in a top-down manner as a function of the graphemic or phonemic emphasis of the task, and (3) to show repetition suppression in response to the conscious repetition of the target word within the same sensory modality or across different modalities. Spatio-temporal analysis of electric brain activity during semantic and phonological word processing.

There is an ongoing debate in cognitive neuroscience about the time course and the functional independence of the different processes involved in encoding written language material. New data indicate very fast and highly parallel language analysis networks in the brain. Here we demonstrate a methodological approach to study the temporal dynamics of this network by searching for time periods where different task demands emphasize different aspects of the network. Multi-channel event related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a semantic and a phonological reading task from 14 healthy subject
