Emotion work in the public performances of male-to-female transsexuals.

Much research has shown that entering the public sphere is emotionally taxing yet key to male-to-female transsexuals' status passage. Yet, little is known about how transsexuals actively manage their emotions during this important transitional phase. Taking a dramaturgical approach to emotions, we explored how some male-to-female transsexuals managed their emotions in ways that helped generate self-confidence and commitment to their paths. Interviewees engaged in three primary forms of emotion work: (1) preparatory emotion work mitigated anxiety and bolstered confidence, which motivated them t

Selective activation of ipRGC modulates working memory performance.

Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are known to be sensitive to short-wavelength light (460-480 nm; blue or cyan light) and to play a role in regulating physiological responses such as circadian rhythms. Previous studies have shown that exposure to blue light improves performance on working memory tasks compared with exposure to amber light. However, it remains unclear whether these cognitive benefits via light are attributable to integrated signals across ipRGCs and rod/cone or ipRGC alone. To address this, the present study investigates the specific contribution of

The effect of working memory performance on functional MRI in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Studies of prefrontal cortical (PFC) function in schizophrenia have been inconsistent, with studies showing both increased and decreased PFC activation compared to healthy controls. Discrepant findings may be due to task performance effects or demographic differences between samples. We report functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data comparing subjects with schizophrenia and healthy controls performing a 2-back working memory (WM) task, addressing the effects of task performance. METHODS: Twenty-two controls and 14 patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia, scanned on a Siemen

Effects of alcohol and performance incentives on immediate working memory.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The Sternberg Memory Scanning task was used to test the hypotheses that immediate working memory (WM) would be impaired during moderate rising blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and provision of a rewarding incentive for good performance under alcohol would counteract this impairment. METHODS: Two groups (n=18) of social drinkers received either 0.62 g/kg alcohol (A) or a placebo (P). Reward (verbal feedback and money) for good performance was provided to another pair of alcohol and placebo groups (n=18) (AR and PR). All participants completed two tests when BACs i

Hand gesture performance is impaired in major depressive disorder: A matter of working memory performance?

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with depression exhibit numerous interpersonal deficits. As effective use of gestures is critical for social communication, it is possible that depressed individuals' interpersonal deficits may be due to deficits in gesture performance. The present study thus compared gesture performance of depressed patients and controls and examined whether these deficits relate to cognitive and other domains of dysfunction. METHODS: Gesture performance was evaluated in 30 depressed patients and 30 controls using the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia (TULIA). Clinical rating scales were asse

The influence of work-life balance on teacher performance in Zhengzhou, China.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the complex interconnections between work-life balance elements, stress levels, emotional intelligence, and teacher effectiveness, contextualised within the Conservation of Resources (COR) paradigm. The research examines the impact of resource conservation and emotional regulation on performance, emphasising stress levels as a mediator and emotional intelligence as a moderator. METHODS: A quantitative methodology was utilised, involving data collection from 300 educators in Zhengzhou, China, and analysis by Structural Equation Modelling using Smart-PLS. The f

Motor skills, cognition, and work performance of people with severe mental illness.

PURPOSE: Employment offers many benefits to people with mental illness, yet their employment rate is much lower than that of the general population. We investigated the effect of work-related motor skills, neurocognition, and job attitudes on the work performance of people with mental illness, comparing those working in sheltered workshops, with controls working in similar jobs. METHODS: Twenty-nine adults with severe mental illness and 27 controls matched by gender and age were enrolled into the study using convenience sampling. They were assessed for gross and fine motor hand functioning, j

Test-retest reliability on nine tasks of the Physical Work Performance Evaluation.

The Physical Work Performance Evaluation (PWPE) is one of many functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) currently available to assist with determining injured workers' physical potential to return to work. Previous research has explored interrater reliability, construct and predictive validity of the PWPE. This research examined test-retest reliability on a sample of 24 clients with stable physical injuries who were participating in vocational rehabilitation. Nine of the 21 main tasks of the PWPE were evaluated: lifting floor to waist, bilateral carrying, pushing, sitting, standing, kneeling, st

PROTOCOL: Multisource Feedback and Work Performance: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Multisource feedback (MSF) is widely used in performance management and leadership development, yet there is still no consensus on whether it predicts improvements in employee performance. This study presents a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating whether the use of person-moderated MSF predicts changes in individual work performance. The review is guided by an integrative framework drawing on feedback intervention theory and existing MSF models. A systematic search and meta-analytic synthesis of the empirical literature will be conducted, and potential moderators o

The productivity illusion: performance measurement and the invisibility of digital clinical work.

Clinical value is now produced in two distinct registers: one that requires physical presence, and one that does not. Performance measurement frameworks, however, were built for mainly the first. Where digital work is counted, it is rarely counted equitably; where it is counted equitably, it is rarely connected to the outcomes it produces. This structural gap, which is termed here value-time-place misalignment, gives rise to the productivity illusion: a system that appears busy, measurable and accountable, while systematically failing to capture the outcomes that it purports to deliver. Work-related road safety: an analysis based on U.K. bus driver performance.

The effects of age and experience on accident involvement for bus drivers were investigated, with special emphasis upon the first years of being an operator, using two methods. First, direct calculations between these variables were undertaken. Thereafter, a variant of the method of quasi-induced exposure (a ratio of culpable versus nonculpable accidents in the population) was used and referred to as the indirect method. These methods yielded fairly similar results, given that the samples used were drawn from the same population but only partly overlapping. It was found that experience had the

Ampakine (CX717) effects on performance and alertness during simulated night shift work.

INTRODUCTION: Round-the-clock operations in both military and civilian sectors have increased the need for alertness- and performance-maintaining strategies. The potential performance and objective alertness-enhancing effects of CX717 (a novel cognitive enhancer currently being tested in Phase II clinical trials) were evaluated using a simulated night shift work paradigm. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel groups design, 48 volunteers underwent 4 consecutive nights of simulated shift work. Each "shift" consisted of the following: at approximately 2145 (jus

[The impact of malnutrition on brain development, intelligence and school work performance].

The findings from several authors confirm that undernutrition at an early age affects brain growth and intellectual quotient. Most part of students with the lowest scholastic achievement scores present suboptimal head circumference (anthropometric indicator of past nutrition and brain development) and brain size. On the other hand, intellectual quotient measured through intelligence tests (Weschler-R, or the Raven Progressives Matrices Test) has been described positively and significantly correlated with brain size measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); in this respect, intellectual abi

Illegitimate tasks and work role performance among engineering consulting professionals: integrating work-family boundary and cognitive-affective personality system theories.

INTRODUCTION: Professionals are often required to perform tasks they regard as unnecessary or inconsistent with their legitimate responsibilities. Although research has linked such illegitimate tasks to adverse work outcomes, less is known about how they are associated with employees' appraisal of the work-nonwork interface, motivational investment, and work role performance, or how leadership conditions this process. Drawing primarily on cognitive-affective personality system (CAPS) theory, we propose that illegitimate tasks operate as situational stimuli that activate employees' work-life ba

Personal vulnerability and work-home interaction: the effect of job performance-based self-esteem on work/home conflict and facilitation.

The aim of the present study was to examine the longitudinal relationship between job performance-based self-esteem (JPB-SE) and work-home interaction (WHI) in terms of the direction of the interaction (work-to-home vs. home-to-work) and the effect (conflict vs. facilitation). A sample of 3,475 respondents from eight different occupational groups (lawyers, physicians, nurses, teachers, church ministers, bus drivers, and people working in advertising and information technology) supplied data at two points of time with a two-year time interval. The two-wave, cross-lagged structural equations mod
