Assessment and management of sleep disorders in shift workers: Challenges and considerations for general practice.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is characterised by displaced sleep opportunities and associated sleep disturbance. Shift workers often report sleepiness and other wake time symptoms associated with poor sleep. However, clinical sleep disorders are also prevalent in shift workers. Although prevalence rates are similar or higher in shift workers compared with the general population, help seeking in shift workers with sleep disorders is low. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to provide general practitioners with a contemporary overview of the prevalence rates for sleep disorders in shift workers, to clarify

Sleep health dimensions and shift work as longitudinal predictors of cognitive performance in the UK Biobank cohort.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The long-term effects of sleep health and shift work on cognitive performance are unclear. In addition, research has been limited by small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. We conducted one of the largest examinations of the longitudinal influence of sleep health dimensions and shift work on cognitive performance in people of middle and old age using data from the UK Biobank. The hypothesis was that poor sleep health and shift work would predict lower cognitive performance. METHODS: Self-reported sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, insomnia symptoms, chronotype, and

[Reproductive health disorders in night shift workers (review of literature)].

The review considers problems of reproductive health disorders in night shift workers. In materials of national and foreign authors, ambiguous opinions are presented on the influence, such as on reproductive sphere malignancies development in shift workers. Data of experimental and clnical laboratory studies are presented, that support reproductive pathologies connected with night shift work. The authors tackle a problem on role of epiphysis and circadian rhythms, that influence physiologic biologic rhythms.

Occupational and Driving Challenges Within Sleep Medicine.

Shift work is a necessity for a society that requires 24/7 services. However, working around the clock can cause a misalignment with our sleep-wake cycle, resulting in sleepiness, impaired cognition and poor health. Due to the prevalence of shift work within safety-critical contexts, there is a need to further understand the causes and consequences of non-typical work on sleep, wellbeing, health and safety, as well as ways to effectively reduce this risk. Furthermore, disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea, which is the most prevalent medical cause of sleepiness, compound the adverse healt

Why nurses need to unwind from work.

With increased pressures in the workplace, more people are at risk of poor health. Individuals frequently take stress home with them and ruminate on problems, which can prevent them from recovering from work. More research is needed to identify and understand which factors can enhance or prevent nurses from effectively unwinding after a shift.

Mental health risk factors for shift work disorder in paramedics: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Depression and anxiety are prominent in paramedics, as is the prevalence of shift work disorder (SWD), a circadian sleep condition comorbid with mental health disorders. However, the role of mental health risk factors for SWD is largely unknown. This study investigated whether mental health levels in recruit paramedics before shift work predicted greater risk of SWD at 6-months into their career and explored whether shift and sleep factors mediated this relationship. DESIGN: A longitudinal study. SETTING: Victoria, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Recruit paramedics were assessed at bas

The Effect of Shift Work on the Overall Health Status of Hospital-Employed Nursing Staff in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is a profession frequently organized around shift work in order to guarantee the continuity of care throughout the 24 hours. However, working in shifts is coupled with the desynchronization of circadian rhythms and may result in adverse effects on nurses' health. Our previous work has demonstrated the presence of increased stress levels, reduced coping abilities and diminished life enjoyment in shift work nurses in comparison to those working only in accordance with the daily schedule. Here we aimed to appraise the effects of shift work on their overall health status. SUBJ

Precarious employment conditions affect work content in education and social work: results of work analyses.

Work content is adversely affected by precarious employment conditions, with consequences for workers and clients/customers. Three examples are taken from professions involving long-term relations between workers and clients. Adult education teachers hired on short-term contracts to teach primarily immigrant populations prepare their courses under less favorable conditions than regular teachers and their employment context foments hostility among teachers. Special education technicians are hired on a seasonal basis which interferes with their ability to coordinate and plan their efforts in col

Sleep patterns of shiftworkers.

Work hours affect sleep because the sleep behavior of people on nonworkdays differs from that on workdays. For most workers, workday sleep is shorter than nonworkday sleep. On nonworkdays most workers sleep at night. Work schedule interacts with the effects of work hours on workday sleep. On workdays, people on the nightshift sleep the least, people on the afternoon/evening shift sleep the most, and people on the dayshift sleep less than those on the afternoon/evening shift but more than those on the nightshift. Thus, the infradian sleep strategy elected by a shiftworker is ordinarily related

Body mass index links night work intensity with higher low-grade systemic inflammation: results from a field study in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of night work on low-grade systemic inflammation, measured as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP concentration), in hospital-employed women. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from 929 women in the 1001 nights-cohort. Seven self-reported metrics captured night work history (never, past, current), night work duration (years) and recency (time since last night shift), current schedule (e.g., permanent night or 2- or 3-shift work), and intensity (number of weekly and consecutive night shifts, and night shifts in the past six days). We measured hsCRP concentr

Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis on the associations between short rest periods between shifts and health, function, and behavioral outcomes.

PURPOSE: This paper presents a protocol for a planned systematic review and meta-analysis that will investigate the impact of short rest periods between shifts (i.e., quick returns, <11 h rest) on various outcomes in terms of physical health of workers (e.g., cardiovascular disease, infections, headaches, back pain) and/or mental health of workers (e.g., anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep problems, insomnia, impaired mental health), as well as sickness absence (proxy of health), work performance (e.g., occupational accidents), social factors (e.g., social support), and psychosocial work-relat

Daytime eating prevents mood vulnerability in night work.

Shift workers have a 25 to 40% higher risk of depression and anxiety partly due to a misalignment between the central circadian clock and daily environmental/behavioral cycles that may negatively affect mood and emotional well-being. Hence, evidence-based circadian interventions are required to prevent mood vulnerability in shift work settings. We used a stringently controlled 14-d circadian paradigm to assess mood vulnerability during simulated night work with either daytime and nighttime or daytime-only eating as compared with simulated day work (baseline). Simulated night work with daytime

A systematic review of the relationship between night shift work and oxidative stress.

Night shift workers make up an essential part of the modern workforce. However, night shift workers have higher incidences of late in life diseases and earlier mortality. Night shift workers experience circadian rhythm disruption due to working overnight. Sleep disruption is thought to increase oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance of excess pro-oxidative factors and reactive oxygen species over anti-oxidative activity. Oxidative stress can damage cells, proteins and DNA and can eventually lead to varied chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's and dem

Within-person differences in night-shift burden and well-being after ICU versus non-ICU night shifts among resident physicians: a paired survey study.

BACKGROUND: Night shifts are integral to residency training but may disrupt sleep and recovery. ICU versus non-ICU comparisons are often confounded by between-person differences, and night-shift exposure is often operationalized using simple shift counts rather than more proximal indicators of sleep disruption and recovery. METHODS: We conducted a single-center within-person paired survey study (August 2025-January 2026) in a tertiary teaching hospital. Residents completed the same questionnaire within 24 h after one non-ICU night shift (T1) and after their second ICU night shift (T2). Night-

Shift work is associated with selective brain volume loss: a longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Global work patterns are changing, with more individuals engaged in shift work and remaining in the workforce later in life. Shift work is linked to disrupted sleep, impaired cognition, and greater risk of metabolic and neurodegenerative disease; effects that are amplified by aging. However, the neural correlates of shift work remain poorly characterized, leaving a critical gap in understanding how occupational schedules may shape the aging brain. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the relationship between shift work on brain structure in healthy adults, and how brain structure c

Night shift work and lymphoma: results from an Italian multicentre case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Night shift work can disrupt circadian rhythm and cause chronic sleep deprivation, which might increase the risk of lymphoma through immunosuppression and oxidative stress. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated the association between night shift work and risk of lymphoma subtypes in 867 incident cases and 774 controls, who participated in a multicentre Italian study between 2011 and 2017. Based on questionnaire information, occupational experts assessed the lifetime probability of night shift work, the total number of night shifts and years of night shift work among study partici
