An aging workforce and injury in the construction industry.

The relatively large birth cohort between 1946 and 1964, combined with the economic recession in the first decade of the 21st century, have led to an increase in the proportion of older workers in the US workplace. Understanding the health and safety needs of an aging workforce will be critical, especially in the construction industry, where physical job demands are high. This paper reviews the epidemiologic literature on the impact of age on injury among workers in the construction industry in terms of cause, type, and cost. PubMed was searched by using the following terms: older workers, con

Shaping our workforce: a Tasmanian development program.

The Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services management and leadership development program consists of a foundation program for frontline and aspiring managers, with additional program streams for graduate trainees, senior nurses and allied health professionals, clinical leaders and senior executive management teams. An academic pathway has also been developed in partnership with the University of Tasmania. Some elements of the management and leadership program were developed with a great deal of specificity and structure, while others have been left free to respond to expressed need

Self-sufficiency in the healthcare workforce: a system dynamics model of the domestic and foreign educated nursing and midwifery workforce in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization (WHO) projections point to an increasing global demand for nurses and midwives, leading to shortages in many countries, particularly in less developed regions. Ireland, the context for this study, currently relies heavily on foreign educated nurses and midwives to meet its demand, with Government policy moving towards a domestic recruitment model. This paper estimates the recruitment requirement and associated nursing and midwifery student intake over time under different reform scenarios. It also highlights policy considerations for countries, like Irelan

A resilient workforce: patient safety and the workforce response to a cyber-attack on the ICT systems of the national health service in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: In May 2021, the Irish public health service was the target of a cyber-attack. The response by the health service resulted in the widespread removal of access to ICT systems. While services including radiology, diagnostics, maternity, and oncology were prioritised for reinstatement, recovery efforts continued for over four months. This study describes the response of health service staff to the loss of ICT systems, and the risk mitigation measures introduced to safely continue health services. The resilience displayed by frontline staff whose rapid and innovative response ensured c

Building the Behavioral Health Crisis Response Workforce.

In the past 5 years, significant federal, state, and local efforts have focused on building behavioral health crisis response services and on shifting this responsibility away from law enforcement. However, these efforts have been hampered by limitations of the behavioral health workforce. Strategies are needed to expand the workforce and to ensure that crisis responders have the competencies and skills necessary to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. Existing federal, state, and local mechanisms can be leveraged to support the development of this workforce. This effort includes inve

People matter: tomorrow's workforce for tomorrow's world.

The focus of any health service, now and into the future, should be people delivering safe, quality care to people; care that covers not just diagnosis and treatment, but the whole experience that patients and their carers have of the service. Workforce development, the process by which the current and future workforce is planned and trained, must be related to current and future patterns of service delivery and take account of financial reality. It cannot exist in isolation. Despite employing 1.3 million people, upon whom up to 70% of its budget is spent, the NHS has been curiously relaxed ab

METHODS: MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were searched on 21 February 2026. Both authors independently screened records and assessed full texts. Determinants of women's employee engagement in the Bangladeshi workforce.

This study examines the determinants of women's employee engagement in Bangladesh, focusing on socio-cultural influences, organizational culture, leadership support, work-life integration, and career development opportunities. Drawing on a cross-sectional survey of 242 women employees across four industries, the study applies partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to estimate the associations between these five determinants and women's employee engagement. Organizational culture, leadership support, and work-life integration are each positively associated with women's emp

Regional Inequities in the Distribution of the Nursing Workforce in Italy.

Background/Objectives: Inequalities in access to nursing professionals represent a significant challenge to achieving equity in healthcare systems. In decentralized countries like Italy, disparities in the distribution of nurses persist despite a universal national health system. This study investigates the extent and determinants of regional inequality in the distribution of the nursing workforce in Italy. Methods: A retrospective ecological analysis was conducted using administrative data from official national sources (ISTAT, Ministry of Health) concerning the number of nurses and populatio

Construction Accidents in Spain: Implications for an Aging Workforce.

Construction workers are getting older. In the European Union, the percentage of workers over 50 grew from 24.7% in 2011 to 31.5% in 2018, in Spain from 20.4% to 31.2%. Objective. Identify trends and detailed patterns of accidents of older construction workers compared to other age groups. Data and Method. We analyzed construction accidents in Spain from 2011 to 2018 (N = 455,491). The number of accidents and lost working days (LWD) were broken down by occupation, seniority, company size, temporal variables (weekday, hour), trigger, and body part injured and compared for different age groups.

Exposure to noise and ototoxic chemicals in the Australian workforce.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the current prevalence of exposure to workplace noise and ototoxic chemicals, including co-exposures. METHOD: A cross-sectional telephone survey of nearly 5000 Australian workers was conducted using the web-based application, OccIDEAS. Participants were asked about workplace tasks they performed and predefined algorithms automatically assessed worker's likelihood of exposure to 10 known ototoxic chemicals as well as estimated their full shift noise exposure level (LAeq,8h) of their most recent working day. Results were extrapolated to represent the Australian working p

Needs and dynamics of the Primary Healthcare workforce in Brazil.

Primary care and the healthcare workforce can be considered the greatest challenges of SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde), principally in recent decades. This article aims to describe the growth and regional distribution of the professions requiring higher education registered in the primary healthcare units. This descriptive study with a quantitative approach is concerned with the 14 accredited professions in the five major regions of Brazil from 2008 to 2013. The data was collected from the national database of the Ministry of Health. Among the professional categories with the greatest rates of na

A New Threat to the Nursing Workforce: Take a Stand!

The consequences of a sedentary lifestyle have been extensively studied, and the findings have been broadly reported in scientific journals as well as all forms of media. The development of cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, venous thromboembolism, and extensive musculoskeletal strain can all result from prolonged immobility and repetitive computer use. Health care workers in the ambulatory setting are impacted by immobility because of the nature of their work. A workstation wellness intervention involved evidence-based activities for employees who have limited physical activi

Arthritis, occupational class, and the aging US workforce.

OBJECTIVES: The working poor sometimes delay retirement to survive. However, their higher risk of disease and disability threatens both their financial survival and their ability to work through the retirement years. We used the burden of disease attributable to arthritis by occupational class to illustrate the challenges faced by the older poor. METHODS: We merged data from the National Health Interview Survey, Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, and the National Death Index into a single database. We then calculated and compared age- and occupational class-specific quality-adjusted life years

The global pharmacy workforce: a systematic review of the literature.

The importance of health workforce provision has gained significance and is now considered one of the most pressing issues worldwide, across all health professions. Against this background, the objectives of the work presented here were to systematically explore and identify contemporary issues surrounding expansion of the global pharmacy workforce in order to assist the International Pharmaceutical Federation working group on the workforce. International peer and non-peer-reviewed literature published between January 1998 and February 2008 was analysed. Articles were collated by performing se
