Workforce perspective on racial and ethnic equity in early childhood autism evaluation and treatment: "The cornerstone of everything we do".

Black and non-White Latinx children tend to receive autism diagnoses later in life and with a higher degree of impairment than White children. The purpose of this study was to learn what is currently helping as well as preventing Black and non-White Latinx children from getting access to autism evaluation and services. We held virtual interviews with 26 experts who work with autistic children and their families, including clinical providers, researchers, advocates, and policymakers/government representatives. From these interviews, we identified four themes that have an impact on equity in aut

Educational strategies for integrating gender perspectives in health professions training: a systematic review to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

BACKGROUND: Preparing health professionals to deliver equitable, culturally competent care requires integrating gender perspectives throughout medical training. While essential for addressing health disparities affecting women, men, and gender-diverse populations, implementation approaches vary widely across institutions and regions. Evidence on effective strategies remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes educational interventions for gender-sensitive training, evaluates outcomes on student competencies, and examines global research patterns to identify equity gaps in the schola

Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup code of conduct for diversity in gynecological cancer trials: a clinical guide from the Berlin Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup meeting.

OBJECTIVE: Under-representation of key population groups limits the generalizability, applicability, and equity of evidence generated by gynecologic oncology trials. Building on the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup Barcelona consensus, this initiative aimed to translate the principles of diversity into a structured, practice-oriented Code of Conduct spanning all phases of clinical research. METHODS: As the third step in an iterative Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup consensus process, a Code of Conduct was developed and formally adopted at the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup Berlin Meeting. Diversity in orthopaedic surgery residency applications-Where are we?

INTRODUCTION: Gender and racial diversity are key topics for discussion in medical education and, in particular, orthopaedic surgery. Studies have shown patient-physician concordance leads to improved healthcare outcomes. Despite this, the orthopaedic surgery workforce is amongst the least diverse. This study examined trends in gender and race amongst applicants to United States (U.S.) orthopaedic surgery programs to understand the future trajectory of the orthopaedic workforce. With an increasing emphasis on diversity, we hypothesize that gender and racial diversity among orthopaedic surgery

From Mission to MOSAIC: Growth and Resilience of an Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program.

BACKGROUND: Academic medicine programs face compounded challenges from public health crises, health inequities, and evolving federal policies pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Older adults and individuals living with serious illness-particularly those from marginalized communities-experienced greater morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic and may continue to see disproportionately negative outcomes amid 2025 federal regulatory changes. METHODS: Within a Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, a DEI initiative evolved into the MOSAIC Council (Mission

Expanding focus: reimagining and broadening women's leadership programs in academic medicine.

In light of increasing legislation aimed at prohibiting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at publicly funded universities in the United States, women-only leadership programs (WOLPs) have come under increasing pressure, which could undermine gender equity advancements, particularly in academic medicine. Women-only leadership programs have traditionally offered a unique advantage for women over mixed-gender leadership programs by fostering psychologically safe spaces to share experiences, teaching leadership competencies while using a gender equity lens in areas where it makes sens

An Interprofessional Commentary on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Efforts in Allied Health Education.

As allied health professionals are front-line workers and drivers of population health, it is vital that their practice is rooted in and centered on quality care and equitable health for all. In recent years, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) initiatives have multiplied and become more robust, particularly within allied health professions. JEDI initiatives help eliminate health disparities related to social factors like race, class, and gender, largely by creating an allied healthcare workforce that represents the culture and ideology of the patients it serves. However, growing

The underrepresented minority STEMM pipeline is a pipe dream: The pipes rarely connect.

Building and sustaining a diverse health care workforce including members of underrepresented groups (URG) requires overcoming an intricate web of structural barriers and their downstream sequelae that conspire to perpetuate underrepresentation of many groups of Americans in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM). These include students from low income, marginalized racial and ethnic minority, gender minority, disabled, female, rural and other groups. Several recent efforts to better recognize and work through these barriers and capture talented URG youth in STEMM have ta

Beauty and the business: staff beauty contests in a time of 'Equal Opportunities'.

Late twentieth-century feminism challenged a core pillar of the profit maximization efforts of corporate capitalism: reinforcement of systemic unearned inequalities as a form of compensation to employees. This article explores how employers harnessed heterosexual impulses and culturally available activities to build staff loyalty. In the 1960s-1980s, English high-street companies ran formal beauty contests open only to their female employees. These staff beauty contests serve as a useful barometer of wider cultural change. They had wide appeal in the 1960s. However, this article demonstrates t

Physician Workforce Disparities and Patient Care: A Narrative Review.

Background: Ensuring the strength of the physician workforce is essential to optimizing patient care. Challenges that undermine the profession include inequities in advancement, high levels of burnout, reduced career duration, and elevated risk for mental health problems, including suicide. This narrative review explores whether physicians within four subpopulations represented in the workforce at levels lower than predicted from their numbers in the general population-women, racial and ethnic minorities in medicine, sexual and gender minorities, and people with disabilities-are at elevated ri

Strategies to Reduce Gender Discrimination in Surgery: A Qualitative Study of Women Neurosurgeons and Cardiothoracic Surgeons.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing numbers of women entering medicine, female neurosurgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons continue to report persistent gender discrimination in their workplaces. While previous efforts to address these disparities have focused on individual-level interventions, less attention has been directed toward the cultural and structural dynamics that sustain inequity within these high-intensity surgical environments. This study explores female surgeons' perspectives on how neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery might become more equitable and inclusive. DESIGN AND SETTING: This

Author diversity in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior 1958-2025.

We used application programming interfaces (APIs) to estimate gender and race/ethnicity based on names of first and last authors in 4,833 articles published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) from 1958 to 2025. From the first to the most recent 5-year interval, Gender API estimated that the percentage of articles with women first authors increased from 6% to 33% and the percentage of first authors Ethnicolr API classified as more likely than not to be authors of color (AOC) increased from 5% to 25%, with similar gains in percentages of last authors estimated to be w

Supporting the home care workforce across the Southern United States: impetus, exploration, and policy strategies.

Southern states face severe home care labor shortages due to low wages, poor working conditions, and limited career advancement opportunities, which are exacerbated by the region's historical labor policies and economic inequalities. This study analyzed workforce size in relation to the population of older adults likely to require paid home care services, subsequently contextualizing those results using a thematic analysis of state American Rescue Plan Act section 9817 spending plans to identify trends in proposed initiatives designed to strengthen the workforce across the region. Our findings

Biomedical Science Ph.D. Career Interest Patterns by Race/Ethnicity and Gender.

Increasing biomedical workforce diversity remains a persistent challenge. Recent reports have shown that biomedical sciences (BMS) graduate students become less interested in faculty careers as training progresses; however, it is unclear whether or how the career preferences of women and underrepresented minority (URM) scientists change in manners distinct from their better-represented peers. We report results from a survey of 1500 recent American BMS Ph.D. graduates (including 276 URMs) that examined career preferences over the course of their graduate training experiences. On average, scient
