Over one million women are employed in child care and are among the lowest wage workers in the US. The health and working conditions of 674 child care workers (118 administrators and 556 staff) from 74 centers is described using baseline data from a larger intervention trial. Participants were 39.9 (±13.0) years old; 55.4% African American, 37.1% Caucasian, and 5.3% of Hispanic ethnicity. Seventy-six percent reported having an Associate's degree or less; 42% were classified as at or below poverty (<$20,000); and exhibited many health risks such as excess weight, insufficient activity, poor die

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of occupational noise (current and cumulative doses) and psychosocial work factors (psychological demands and decision latitude) on tinnitus occurrence among workers, using objective and non-self-reported exposure measures to prevent reporting bias.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from a Danish survey from 2009 to 2010 that included 534 workers from children day care units and 10 manufacturing trades. Associations between risk factors (current noise exposure, cumulative noise exposure and psychosocial worki

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe informal e-waste recycling and working conditions at Agbogbloshie, Accra, Ghana.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews which were qualitatively analysed from a grounded theory perspective.
RESULTS: Workers obtained e-waste from the various residential areas in Accra, then dismantled and burned them in open air to recover copper, aluminum, steel, and other products for sale to customers on-site or at the nearby Agbogbloshie market. The processers worked under unhealthy conditions often surrounded by refuse and human excreta without any form of protec

The aim of this study was to quantify VOC concentrations in different ventilation conditions, Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), illumination and noise levels in two automobile repair shops. A cross-sectional study was conducted at two shops in Surat Thani province, Thailand. VOCs were collected by area sampling using charcoal tubes. The air samples were analyzed by GC-FID. The noise levels, illumination, and temperature were measured by using noise dosimeter, lux meter, and WBGT apparatus, respectively. Fifteen different VOCs were detected in both shops. Most of the VOCs measured had levels b

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on changes in working conditions and mental health are few and have typically focused only on psychosocial working conditions. We assessed the impact of changes in both psychosocial and physical working conditions on common mental disorders (CMDs) in a cohort of midlife and older employees.
METHODS: Repeat data were derived from the Helsinki Health Study, which is a cohort study on employees of the City of Helsinki, Finland (aged 40-60 years at baseline). Changes in working conditions were assessed between Phase 1 (2000-2002) and Phase 2 (2007). CMD was assessed a

PURPOSE: This national survey has measured the working conditions, work engagement, job strain, burn out, and the negative work-home interaction among Belgian radiation oncologists with validated questionnaires. In fact, previous studies had in general shown an interest to burn out and its association with working conditions among oncology workers, but not focused on radiation oncologists in particular. Moreover, few studies concerned work engagement and its association with working conditions although this could be important in preventing burn out.
METHODS: We used the WOrking Conditions and

Early leaving of workplace by work forces is one of the fundamental problems worldwide. Maintenance and enhancement of employees work ability are important for raising productivity. Neurological symptoms are very frequent in inborn errors of metabolism. This chapter presents a general approach to investigate inborn errors of metabolism in chronic neurological conditions. A diagnostic work-up has been designed to evaluate progressive neurological conditions with motor, cognitive, and/or behavioral signs in early infancy, late infancy to early childhood, and late childhood to adolescence. Inborn errors of metabolism associated with peripheral neuropathies, microcephaly, or macrocephaly are also reviewed.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis can occur from a wide variety of occupational exposures. Although uncommon and difficult to recognize, through a detailed work exposure history, physical examination, radiography, pulmonary function studies, and selected laboratory studies using sera and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, workers can be identified early to effect avoidance of the antigen and institute pharmacologic therapy, if necessary. A lung biopsy may be necessary to rule out other interstitial lung diseases. Despite the varied organic antigen triggers, the presentation is similar with acute, subacu

BACKGROUND: Few studies have been aimed at describing organizational and psychosocial conditions of the Italian workforce by occupational group, and they have been mainly conducted within specific occupations.

Conditions of work of seafarers depend on the influence of physical, chemical biological and psycho-social factors. In 1971-1973, the health of 3000 sefarers was examined; their main health problems were: neuroses (10.13%), arterial hypertension (4.63%), ulcer of stomach and duodenum (2.80%), renal calculi (2.80%), and the alcoholic addiction (1.73%). Those seamen worked on cargo ships which technically differed from ships which sail the seas in the nineties; they were slower, to load them and unload took much time, and they stayed in ports for long periods of time. Recent technical developmen

We examined the question of what distinguishes persons with musculoskeletal disease who continue working after onset of illness from those who do not. We also investigated why persons with musculoskeletal disease have high rates of work disability relative to those with other chronic conditions of comparable activity limitation. Data regarding 3,100 persons with limitations in activities and chronic disease who were respondents to the 1978 Social Security Administration Survey of Disabled and Non-Disabled Adults were used. Persons with musculoskeletal disease who stopped working had poorer ove

Serial measurements of urinary adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroid excretion were performed on 32 healthy men under two conditions of work stress; piecework and work on assembly line. A statistically significant increase in adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids was observed for piecework and assembly line workers compared with salaried and 'ordinary' workers. The results support the assumption that psychosocial factors of an everyday type have significant effects on the sympathoadrenomedullary and adrenocortical function.
