Long-term assessment of pancarpal arthrodesis performed on working dogs in New Zealand.

AIM: To determine the outcomes following unilateral pancarpal arthrodesis (PCA) in working dogs in New Zealand, in terms of return to work and ability, as assessed by the owner. METHODS: Working dogs treated using unilateral PCA were identified by searching the medical records of the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (MUVTH) by diagnosis and breed code. Eight Heading dogs (working Collies) and four New Zealand Huntaways were identified with carpal pathology that had been treated by dorsal-plate application, bone-grafting, and casting. All dogs were actively in work on sheep or ca

Dogs' Detection of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 by Non-Working Dogs: Feasibility and Limits Under Controlled Laboratory Conditions.

Dogs can detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with infectious diseases, but their ability to distinguish between symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections has not been fully established. In this exploratory proof-of-concept study with a limited number of dogs, eight non-working dogs (without experience in scent detection) began training with either symptomatic or asymptomatic Delta samples; seven reached the testing phase and were then evaluated on the alternate group to assess cross-generalization. Training initially used a yes/no protocol but was adapted to a line-up

Dog owners' job stress crosses over to their pet dogs via work-related rumination.

Job stress can have well-being consequences for the employee's loved ones through crossover: the transference of work-related stress from an employee to their family members. Pet dogs-who most Americans view as family members-may also be susceptible to crossover. Given prior support for dogs' abilities to perceive and absorb a human's emotions via emotional contagion, we expected that pet dogs of owners with higher job stress would themselves be more stressed. We anticipated that work-related rumination, or the tendency to continue thinking about work during leisure time, would explain this re

Deep learning models for interpretation of point of care ultrasound in military working dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Military working dogs (MWDs) are essential for military operations in a wide range of missions. With this pivotal role, MWDs can become casualties requiring specialized veterinary care that may not always be available far forward on the battlefield. Some injuries such as pneumothorax, hemothorax, or abdominal hemorrhage can be diagnosed using point of care ultrasound (POCUS) such as the Global FAST® exam. This presents a unique opportunity for artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in the interpretation of ultrasound images. In this article, deep learning classification neural netwo

Coccidioides spp. exposure among military working dogs in endemic regions of the United States.

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal disease in arid regions of the United States that is predicted to expand with climate change. Cases in military personnel and military working dogs (MWDs) impact personnel readiness and result in healthcare costs. To examine Coccidioides exposure among MWDs, 276 banked serum samples were retrieved from dogs housed in California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah. Using gel immunodiffusion, six (2.1%) specimens were IgG-positive and three (1.1%) were equivocally IgM-positive. The IgG-positive samples were from Arizona (2 [prevalence 8.0%]) and Californi

Prestretching increases working space at the same insufflation pressure in dogs undergoing laparoscopic procedures.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if prestretching (PS) of the abdominal wall provided improved working space during elective laparoscopic procedures in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Fifty client-owned dogs undergoing elective laparoscopic procedures. METHODS: Skin markings were used to evaluate stretching of the abdominal wall. The distance from the subumbilical port to the caudal aspect of the gallbladder was measured as a proxy for intra-abdominal working length (IWL). Prestretching was performed by insufflating to an intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) of 10 mmHg for 3 min. Th

Seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in military working dogs in the Republic of Korea.

In this study we endeavored to determine the seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in the military working dog (MWD) population in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Our sample population consisted of 182 serum samples from MWDs for 3 different years (1996, 2002, and 2007). In addition, 63 whole blood samples from 2007 were available for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Serum samples were evaluated by a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and by ELISA only for Borrelia burgdorferi. Lactic acid permeation rate in working gastrocnemii of dogs during metabolic alkalosis and acidosis.

In isolated, blood perfused, supramaximally stimulated, isotonically working gastrocnemii of dogs lactic acid (LA) output and O2-consumption (V O2) were measured according to the Fick principle. Simultaneously concentration of muscle tissue was determined at rest and at different times during exercise. In one series of experiments metabolic alkalosis was induced by infusions of THAM of Na bicarbonate. As a result arterial pH increased to about 7.5 and standard [HCO3-1] to 31-35 mmol per 1. In another group of experiments metabolic acidosis was induced by HCl infusions. In these experiments pH

[Diagnostic work-up of body cavity effusions in dogs and cats].

Patients with body cavity effusions are often seen in veterinary practice. However, the underlying causes of effusion formation are numerous and to draw conclusions about the underlying pathogenesis, further laboratory diagnostic work-up is essential. An initial classification of the pathomechanism (transudate versus exudate) may already be achieved using simple tools that are generally available in every practice (e. g. refractometer, hematology device/counting chamber, microscope). The effusion analysis includes macroscopic assessment, evaluation of the protein content, determination of the nu

Causes of mortality in military working dog from traumatic injuries.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to identify the pathophysiologic causes of death following traumatic injuries in military working dogs (MWDs) and determine the risk factors associated with mortality in MWD following traumatic injuries. The results of this study will allow for better targeting of interventions to ameliorate these pathophysiologic causes of death and inform research priorities directed at the pathophysiology that leads to the death of MWDs. METHODS: The final dataset for this study was compiled by using two previously established datasets. Based on review of available data and s

A detection dog for obstructive sleep apnea: could it work in diagnostics?

PURPOSE: We have previously demonstrated that dogs can be trained to distinguish the urine of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from that of healthy controls based on olfaction. Encouraged by these promising results, we wanted to investigate if a detection dog could work as a screening tool for OSA. The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the dogs' ability to identify sleep apnea in patients with OSA suspicion. METHODS: Urine samples were collected from 50 patients suspected of having OSA. The urine sample was classified as positive for OSA when the patient had a res

Corrective osteotomy for bilateral forelimb varus deformities in a working dog.

Bilateral varus antebrachial deformity in a 7-month-old working dog was surgically corrected. The deformity was a sequela to premature closure of the distal radial physes after trauma to the forelimbs. Treatment was by ulnectomy and oblique radial osteotomy. Stabilisation of the fractures was maintained by an external fixation device. The treatment was successful and the dog returned to work as a sheep dog.

Epidemiology of gastric dilatation-volvulus in the military working dog program.

Examination of case records of 914 military working dogs which died during the period January 1, 1987-December 31, 1989, revealed 31 deaths (3.4%) due to gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) or its complications. The fata episode of GDV was the only reported occurrence of this condition in 81% of the dogs. Male German shepherd dogs, 6-10 years of age, that were fed a medicated high-energy ration once per day, predominated. Dogs in this study that had a prior history of acute gastric dilatation (AGD) or GDV, and that were decompressed by non-surgical means, eventually died of GDV. A comparison wit

Energy sources and mechanical efficiency of anaerobic work in dog gastrocnemius.

Thermally isolated dog gastrocnemii were stimulated to exhaustion by rhythmic isotonic tetani of 0.2s duration (30 min-1) in complete occlusion of blood flow. Total enthalpy change, H = heat + work, work output, w, (kJ . kg-1) and average mechanical efficiency over the working period, n = w/H, were determined from deep muscle temperature increase and amount of shortening, and lactate produced, La, (mol . kg-1) from washout curves, respectively. Under these conditions H is the sum of the enthalpies due to a) alactic sources (Hal), i.e., net approximately P depletion and muscle O2 stores utiliza

Faecal microbiome transplantation improves clinical signs of chronic idiopathic large bowel diarrhoea in working dogs.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diarrhoea is a common clinical sign in dogs with chronic enteropathy, and psyllium husk has been shown to improve clinical signs in affected dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether faecal microbiome transplant has a similar effect in alleviating clinical signs in dogs with chronic large bowel diarrhoea. METHOD: Thirty large-breed working dogs with chronic large bowel diarrhoea were divided into a psyllium group (PG) and a faecal microbiome transplant group (FMTG). To the PG, 16 g/day of psyllium husk was administered for 30 days. The FMTG received faecal mic

Chemoprophylaxis and treatment of African canine trypanosomosis in French military working dogs: a retrospective study.

African trypanosomosis is a major threat to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the disease mainly concerns cattle, dogs can also be infected by Trypanosoma spp. transmitted by tsetse flies. Between 1997 and 2003, the parasite Trypanosoma congolense was identified in French military dogs sent to Africa. On infected dogs, the diagnosis was made during the mission or just after the return to France, depending on when the symptoms appeared. The high incidence and mortality rate among these dogs led veterinarians of the French Health Service to implement a systematic chemoprophyla

Meteorological influence on the occurrence of gastric dilatation-volvulus in military working dogs in Texas.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening condition in dogs and other species in which the stomach dilates and rotates on itself. The etiology of the disease is multi-factorial, but explicit precipitating causes are unknown. This study sought to determine if there was a significant association between changes in hourly-measured temperature and/or atmospheric pressure and the occurrence of GDV in the population of high-risk working dogs in Texas. The odds of a day being a GDV day, given certain temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions for that day or the day before, was est

Canine decontamination, a laboratory study evaluating proper techniques to remove toxic materials from working dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Working dogs can inadvertently encounter toxic chemicals while performing their key activities. These can include toxic industrial chemicals and materials (TICs/TIMs), pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, sewage, pesticides, and even highly toxic chemical warfare agents. All these materials can poison the canine, be spread by touch, and can be transferred to the handler, vehicle, or veterinary medical staff. A successful decontamination technique must be safe for the handler to perform, can be performed at the site of contamination, successfully removes the hazardous material before i
