Gastrointestinal Illness Associated with Rancid Tortilla Chips at a Correctional Facility - Wyoming, 2015.

On October 12, 2015, a county health department notified the Wyoming Department of Health of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among residents and staff members at a local correctional facility. The majority of ill persons reported onset of symptoms within 1-3 hours after eating lunch served at the facility cafeteria at noon on October 11. Residents and staff members reported that tortilla chips served at the lunch tasted and smelled like chemicals. The Wyoming Department of Health and county health department personnel conducted case-control studies to identify the outbreak source. Cons

Spread of virulent group A Streptococcus type emm59 from Montana to Wyoming, USA.

Full-genome sequencing showed that a recently emerged and hypervirulent clone of group A Streptococcus type emm59 active in Canada and parts of the United States has now caused severe invasive infections in rural northeastern Wyoming. Phylogenetic analysis of genome data indicated that the strain was likely introduced from Montana.

Dissemination of evidence-based practices for anxiety disorders in Wyoming: a survey of practicing psychotherapists.

Despite the well-established effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of anxiety disorders, therapists have been slow to adopt CBT into their clinical practice. The present study was conducted to examine the utilization of psychotherapy techniques for anxiety disorders among community practitioners in a rural setting in order to determine the current status of the dissemination of CBT. A sample of 51 licensed psychotherapists from various mental health professions was recruited from online practice listings in the state of Wyoming. Participants comple

Plague in a complex of white-tailed prairie dogs and associated small mammals in Wyoming.

Fleas were collected from white-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) and other small mammals trapped on six grids during a field study near Meeteetse (Wyoming, USA) in 1989 and 1990 to investigate the dynamics of plague in this rodent population. Fleas were identified and tested for Yersinia pestis by mouse inoculation. Yersinia pestis-positive fleas were found on prairie dogs and in their burrows. Flea species on prairie dogs changed from spring to late summer. White-tailed prairie dog numbers were significantly lower in the presence of Y. pestis-positive fleas; however, affected population

Seasonal movement and spatial distribution of the sheep ked (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) on Wyoming lambs.

When populations of adult sheep ked, Melophagus ovinus (L.), infesting unshorn lambs were monitored at the University of Wyoming Paradise Farm during 1986, we determined the body regions on which keds would be found at various times of the year and their seasonal population trends for optimal sampling. Results suggested that ked populations were consistently greater on the ribs than on any other area of the lamb. No significant differences were detected for ked populations between sides of a lamb. Distinct and similar ked population trends over time occurred only in the rib, thigh, shoulder, h

A plague epizootic in the white-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) of Meeteetse, Wyoming.

Surveillance for sylvatic plague (Yersinia pestis) was conducted near Meeteetse, Wyoming (USA) from 24 May to 14 June 1985. Ten species of fleas were collected from white-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus), and from their burrows and associated rodents. Five of these flea species and two adult prairie dogs were positive for plague. The progression of this plague epizootic appeared to be slower and the intensity was less than in previous epizootics in other prairie dog colonies. The plague epizootic occurred within the only known colony of black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) and was a p

Effects of management, behavior, and scavenging on risk of brucellosis transmission in elk of western Wyoming.

Brucellosis is endemic in elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) using winter feedgrounds of western Wyoming, USA presumably because of increased animal density, duration of attendance, and subsequent contact with aborted fetuses. However, previous research addressed antibody prevalence rather than more direct measures of transmission and did not account for elk behavior or scavenging in transmission risk. Throughout March and early April 2005-07, we monitored 48 sets of culture-negative, pseudoaborted elk fetuses, placentas, and fluids (fetal units, FUs) on one winter free-ranging (WFR) location and fo

Telehealth Usability Among Rural and Low-Income Populations: A Survey of Wyoming Medicaid Members.

Telehealth has been shown as a tool to improve health access and outcomes in rural areas. There is less literature examining the usability and utility of telehealth by rural and low-income populations. Existing literature focuses on examining telehealth usability for specific telehealth platforms and specific use cases. There is minimal literature broadly examining telehealth usability in rural and low-income populations. Using the Telehealth Usability Questionnaire in conjunction with demographic questions, we examined telehealth usability in the Wyoming Medicaid population. Additionally, we

Septicemic pasteurellosis in elk (Cervus elaphus) on the United States National Elk Refuge, Wyoming.

Septicemic pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida is believed responsible for the deaths of 48 elk (Cervus elaphus) on the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming (USA) during 1986 and 1987. Clinical signs included depression and salivation; necropsy findings included congestion and petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages in lymph nodes, diaphragm, lungs and endocardium. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from femur marrow of eight carcasses and a variety of tissues from eight others.

Identification and characterization of Escherichia coli isolated from the surface water of the Laramie River, Wyoming.

Surface water is vital for drinking, recreation, wildlife, agriculture, and industry, highlighting the need for routine microbiological monitoring. Escherichia coli (E. coli) in environmental waters serves as a key indicator of fecal contamination and is essential for monitoring water quality. We investigated the phylogenetic diversity, pathogenicity, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of E. coli strains isolated from surface water in the Laramie River watershed, used for agriculture and recreation. Phylogenetic analysis of 109 isolates identified phylogroup A as the most prevalent (74.3%), fo

Graphically characterizing the movement of a rabid striped skunk epizootic across the landscape in northwestern Wyoming.

A striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) rabies epizootic in northwestern Wyoming was studied from the Index Case in 1988 to the last case in 1993, and possibly is the first rabies epizootic in a previously rabies-free zone monitored from beginning to end. The 843 km(2) study area comprised skunk habitat along 90 km of Shoshone River's floodplain from Bighorn Lake upstream to Cody. Of 1,015 skunks tested, 215 were rabies-positive. Integrating spatial and temporal data from positive cases, we analyzed the epizootic's movements and dynamics at 6-month intervals using multivariate movement maps, a new

A case-control study of hypertensive women in a post-disaster community: Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania.

Among 396 female flood victims participating in a five-year post-disaster survey, 31 cases were identified who developed hypertension during that time period. A case-control study of hypertension was carried out utilizing age and ponderal index as matching criteria. The purpose of the study was to assess risk factors for hypertension associated with the early recovery period. Pairwise matching yielded 29 case-control pairs for analysis. Such factors as property loss, financial difficulties, physical work, use of alcohol, and perceived distress--all associated with the recovery period--were sig

Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever, in domestic sheep flocks from Wyoming, United States.

Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever, is an intracellular bacterial pathogen. It has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. We conducted a serological survey of domestic sheep herds for infections with C. burnetii in Wyoming following reports of abortion and open ewes. Based on the serologic evidence, there was no link between reproductive problems and exposure to C. burnetii. However, the overall prevalence of C. burnetii in WY sheep was 7%, which indicates that the agent is present in the environment and could pose a threat to public health.

Survey of coyotes, red foxes and wolves from Wyoming, USA, for Echinococcus granulosus s. l.

The paraphyletic group Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato is comprised of parasitic tapeworms of wild and domestic canids such as wolves (Canis lupus) and coyotes (Canis latrans), which serve as definitive hosts, and ungulates, which are the intermediate hosts. Members of this tapeworm group are characterized by both cosmopolitan distribution and zoonotic disease potential. This survey (conducted from 2012 through 2017) was designed to provide insight into the prevalence and distribution of this parasite in wild canids in Wyoming. Echinococcus sp. infections were documented in 14 of 22 gray wo

Methylmercury enters an aquatic food web through acidophilic microbial mats in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

Microbial mats are a visible and abundant life form inhabiting the extreme environments in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), WY, USA. Little is known of their role in food webs that exist in the Park's geothermal habitats. Eukaryotic green algae associated with a phototrophic green/purple Zygogonium microbial mat community that inhabits low-temperature regions of acidic (pH approximately 3.0) thermal springs were found to serve as a food source for stratiomyid (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae. Mercury in spring source water was taken up and concentrated by the mat biomass. Monomethylmercury comp
