Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a potential gaseous signaling molecule, is involved in mediating biotic and abiotic stress in plants. Currently, there are no studies investigating the mechanism by which H2S improves photosynthesis under black rot (BR) stress caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. Campestris (Xcc). In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenous H2S on Xcc induced photosynthetic impairment in cabbage seedlings. BR has an inhibitory effect on the photosynthetic ability of cabbage seedlings. Xcc infection can significantly reduce the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteri

The interaction of Mn+2 with substituted salicylaldehydes (X-saloH) led to the formation of five manganese(II) complexes formulated as [Μn(X-salo)2(MeOH)2]. When the reactions took place in the presence of an α-diimine such as 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-bipyridylamine, five manganese(II) complexes of the formula [Mn(X-salo)2(α-diimine)] were isolated. The characterization of the complexes was accomplished by various spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The antioxidant activity of the compounds was evaluated via the scavenging of 1,1-diphenyl-picr

Coumarin is a natural product known for its diverse biological activities. While its antifungal properties in agricultural chemistry have been extensively studied, there is limited research on its antibacterial potential. In this study, we developed several novel coumarin derivatives by combining coumarin with pyridinium salt through molecular hybridization and chemical synthesis. Our findings reveal that most of these derivatives exhibit promising antibacterial activity. Among them, derivative A25 has been identified as the most effective compound based on three-dimensional quantitative struc

Crude extracts of the Penicillium sp. strain KF620 isolated from the North Sea showed antimicrobial activities against Xanthomonas campestris and Candida glabrata. Purification of the extracts led to the isolation of the new aromatic butenolides eutypoids B (1), C (2), D (3), and E (4). Their structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and supported by HRESIMS and UV data. The antibacterial activity of the crude extracts was due to the presence of the known diketopiperazine fellutanine (cyclo(Trp-Trp)). The eutypoids were neither cytotoxic nor antibacterial, but inhibited the activity of gl

Black rot caused by hemibiotrophic Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is a great problem in crucifer crop production. Various host responses are activated upon Xcc attack; however, their roles in black rot resistance remain ambiguous. In this study, a highly black rot resistance of host plants was achieved by applying a field-screened systemic resistance-eliciting Bacillus velezensis strain 37-1. The contributions of strain 37-1-altered host responses to Xcc resistance were then investigated in Arabidopsis. Hypersensitive response and hydrogen peroxide accumulation were demonstrated b

Plant pathogens colonize multiple plant-associated habitats throughout their life cycle, encountering distinct nutrient conditions and microbial communities. l-methionine is required for bacterial growth and environmental adaptation. However, how plant pathogens coordinate l-methionine biosynthetic pathways to adapt to different plant-associated environments remains poorly understood. Here, using the plant pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris strain XC1 as a model, we show that three homocysteine methyltransferase pathways allow XC1 to catalyze the final step of l-methionine biosynth

Abilities of bacterial pathogens to adapt to the iron limitation present in hosts is critical to their virulence. Bacterial pathogens have evolved diverse strategies to coordinately regulate iron metabolism and virulence associated functions to maintain iron homeostasis in response to changing iron availability in the environment. In many bacteria the ferric uptake regulator (Fur) functions as transcription factor that utilize ferrous form of iron as cofactor to regulate transcription of iron metabolism and many cellular functions. However, mechanisms of fine-tuning and coordinated regulation

Glucosinolates (GSLs) are secondary metabolites found in Brassica vegetables that confer on them resistance against pests and diseases. Both GSLs and glucosinolate hydrolysis products (GHPs) have shown positive effects in reducing soil pathogens. Information about their in vitro biocide effects is scarce, but previous studies have shown sinigrin GSLs and their associated allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) to be soil biocides. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biocide effects of 17 GSLs and GHPs and of leaf methanolic extracts of different GSL-enriched Brassica crops on suppressing in vit

The transcription activator-like effector Tal12a is widely conserved among Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris strains that cause black rot in Brassica crops. However, its role in disease remains unclear. To investigate how Tal12a contributes to pathogenesis, we combined transcriptomic profiling of cauliflower leaves infected with Tal12a-expressing strains, prediction of TALE-binding elements, and heterologous expression assays in Nicotiana benthamiana. The aim of this approach was to identify candidate susceptibility genes. Artificial TALEs were further employed to validate the contribution

Ubiquitination is essential for ubiquitin/proteasome-mediated protein degradation in plant development and defense. Here, we identified a novel E3 ubiquitin ligase RING1 gene, CaRING1, from pepper (Capsicum annuum). In pepper, CaRING1 expression is induced by avirulent Xanthomonas campestris pv vesicatoria infection. CaRING1 contains an amino-terminal transmembrane domain and a carboxyl-terminal RING domain. In addition, it displays in vitro E3 ubiquitin ligase activity, and the RING domain is essential for E3 ubiquitin ligase activity in CaRING1. CaRING1 also localizes to the plasma membrane.

A gene encoding putative ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) has been isolated by differential screening of a cDNA library from the resistant hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) inoculated with avirulent tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) pathotype P0. In hot pepper plants, transcripts of the CaODC1 (C. annuum ODC1) gene started to accumulate at 24 h post-inoculation of TMV-P0 and the signal was spread systemically. The transcript level of CaODC1 was increased rapidly in a hot pepper resistant to Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Xcv) but not in a susceptible hot pepper after inoculation. These results su

Yersiniae, causative agents of plague and gastrointestinal diseases, secrete and translocate Yop effector proteins into the cytosol of macrophages, leading to disruption of host defense mechanisms. It is shown in this report that Yersinia enterocolitica induces apoptosis in macrophages and that this effect depends on YopP. Functional secretion and translocation mechanisms are required for YopP to act, strongly suggesting that this protein exerts its effect intracellularly, after translocation into the macrophages. YopP shows a high level of sequence similarity with AvrRxv, an avirulence protei

Black rot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), is a devastating disease in cabbage. As a gaseous signaling molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is widely involved in plant disease resistance. However, the mechanism by which H2S enhances resistance to Xcc remains unclear. In our study, we demonstrate that exogenous H2S significantly enhances cabbage resistance to black rot by enhancing the phenylpropanoid pathway and antioxidant system. Physiological and biochemical analyses revealed that H2S pretreatment boosted endogenous H2S and nitric oxide (NO) levels by over 18.8% and 107.7

Isolation for antibacterial compounds from natural plants is a promising approach to develop new pesticides. In this study, two compounds were obtained from the Chinese endemic plant Piper austrosinense using bioassay-guided fractionation. Based on analyses of 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and mass spectral data, the isolated compounds were identified as 4-allylbenzene-1,2-diol and (S)-4-allyl-5-(1-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)allyl)benzene-1,2-diol. 4-Allylbenzene-1,2-diol was shown to have strong antibacterial activity against four plant pathogens, including Xanthomonas oryzae pathovar oryzae (Xoo), X. axonopodi

Pepper ( Capsicum annuum L.) SAR8.2 genes, designated CASAR82A, B and C, which are induced by all the biotic and abiotic stresses, were isolated from a pepper cDNA library constructed with the mRNAs from pepper plants infected with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria. The pepper CASAR82A, B and C gene products, which are very similar to each other in amino acid sequences, have 43-50% homology with those of tobacco SAR8.2 genes. The CASAR8.2 genes were not constitutively expressed in any of the organs of healthy pepper plants. In contrast, the CASAR82A gene was locally or systemically induce
