In 8 patients with psoriasis vulgaris, the cutaneous blood flow (CBF) was measured simultaneously in both involved and uninvolved psoriatic skin before (i.e., on the first day of hospitalization) and on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 28th days of treatment with tar. The spinal cord blood flow has been measured in anaesthetized dogs using an inert radioactive gas ((133)Xenon) clearance technique. The (133)Xe was placed in the cord by direct injection. This study has demonstrated that the flows obtained from the white matter are reproducible and that there is little variation in blood flow in the white matter between different thoracolumbar segments in the same dog. No difference was found in blood flow between dogs anaesthetized with halothane, trichlorethylene, or pentobarbitone.

We screened 80 patients at our hospital for the differential diagnosis of impotence using intracavernous injection of prostaglandin E1 (20 micrograms). Cerebral blood flow determinations using the Xenon inhalation test in two patients with transient global amnesia showed overall decreases during the attack with a more marked fall in temporal-inferior frontal flow in one case and in temporal flow in the other. Cortical blood flow was evaluated at the time of surgery with a thermal diffusion flow probe in 25 extracranial-intracranial bypass operations. Testicular blood flow was measured by intratesticular injection of 133Xe both under control conditions and in experimental 720 degree intravaginal torsion (10 rabbits) and in epididymo-orchitis (5 rabbits). A 41-year-old woman presented with a history of sudden onset of a dementia with frontal signs and antero-retrograde amnesia. CT showed a bilateral paramedian thalamic infarct which was confirmed by MRI. The study of regional cerebral blood flow showed a decrease in both frontal regions. Results of imaging suggested lesions of the ventro-oral, latero-polar and intralaminar nuclei as well as of the mammillo-thalamic tract. The dorso-median nucleus appeared to be relatively spared.

Regional lung function was measured using radioactive xenon-133 in a group of normal subjects and in two groups of asbestos workers. When compared with the normal group, patients with pulmonary asbestosis showed impaired ventilation of the lower zones. Subjects with calcified pleural plaques without radiological evidence of lung parenchymal fibrosis did not show this abnormality.

Myocardial imaging with 133-Xe and a gamma camera was employed to evaluate total and regional myocardial blood flow. The technique detected vasodilatation after injection of papaverine or diatrizoate. Contrast medium caused transient vasodilatation with return to baseline flow within five minutes. The blood flow rates and ability to remove an added fluid load were studied in the testes of monkeys with surgically induced varicoceles and in sham-operated control monkeys. These studies were conducted to verify a proposed mechanism by which varicocele may cause testicular and spermatogenic damage.
