Deployment and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines for refugees and migrants in Ecuador.

This study examines access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among refugees and migrants in Ecuador, including those with regular and irregular migration status. Conducted in Quito, Manta, and Huaquillas with 344 participants, the article reports on the survey data to assess vaccination access, barriers, and enablers. Findings show that 94% of respondents received at least one vaccine dose, despite 69% having irregular status. However, gaps remained in second and booster dose uptake, which was linked to misinformation and administrative barriers such as lack of documentation, discrimination and

Associations between structural stigma and earlier pubertal timing persist for 1 year among Black girls and Latinx youth.

Black and Latinx youth experience earlier pubertal timing relative to their non-stigmatized peers. Research on determinants of this increased risk has largely focused on aspects of individuals (e.g., body mass index) or their proximal environment (e.g., socioeconomic status), to the exclusion of broader macro-social factors. Using 2 years of Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® data, we examined whether structural stigma (e.g., state-level policies, aggregated prejudicial attitudes) was associated with hormonal and physical markers of pubertal development. Baseline results documented

Sex-selective abortion bans and the birth outcomes of Asian immigrants.

The pro-life movement in the United States has achieved significant legislative victories in restricting abortion access. Among these, sex-selective abortion bans (SSABs)-prohibitions on abortions sought based on fetal sex-have garnered little scholarly attention. Advocates of SSABs often invoke xenophobic stereotypes, claiming that Asian immigrants hold a cultural preference for sons and engage in sex-selective abortions of female fetuses. This study examines the impact of SSABs on Asian immigrant mothers' birth outcomes, hypothesizing that these laws foster a stigmatizing social climate that

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

Circumstances for a suicide attempt in perception of managers, health professionals and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the psychosocial circumstances surrounding adolescent suicide attempts, from the perspectives of the adolescents themselves, healthcare professionals, and CAPSij managers. METHOD: A qualitative study grounded in dialectical hermeneutics, conducted through semi-structured interviews between January and December 2024 with 27 healthcare professionals, five CAPSij managers, and nine adolescents who had attempted suicide in a metropolitan area of southeastern Brazil. Bardin's content analysis identified three categories: weakened family ties, experiences of violence, and the

Trans and Non-Binary Latin American Migrants in London: An Intersectional Analysis of Migration and Psychological Well-Being.

This study explores the experiences of trans and non-binary Latin American migrants in London, addressing a gap in research on queer migration and well-being outside the US context. Using semi-structured interviews and "walking interviews" with seven participants, this research examines the participants' migration motives, gender resocialisation, and interactions within queer and Latin American communities in London. A thematic analysis, guided by intersectionality and minority stress theory as theoretical lenses, produced four key themes: (1) Latin American culture and family dynamics: tradit

Combating the COVID-19 infodemic using Prompt-Based curriculum learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a proliferation of online misinformation and disinformation about the virus. Combating this 'infodemic' has been identified as one of the top priorities of the World Health Organization, because false and misleading information can lead to a range of negative consequences, including the spread of false remedies, conspiracy theories, and xenophobia. This paper aims to combat the COVID-19 infodemic on multiple fronts, including determining the credibility of information, identifying its potential harm to society, and the necessity of intervention by

Sewers and scapegoats: spatial metaphors of smallpox in nineteenth century San Francisco.

Medical geography is slowly including more social and cultural theory in its analysis of health issues. Yet there is still room for theoretical growth in the discipline, in areas such as historical inquiry, metaphoric landscapes of disease, and the role of disease and its interpretations in the production of place. With the example of four smallpox epidemics in nineteenth century San Francisco, application of these concepts is illustrated. Each successive epidemic in San Francisco brought stronger association of the disease with Chinatown, until an almost complete metonymy of place and disease

Effects of Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality on Youth Symptoms Amidst COVID-19.

Amidst the health and socioeconomic burdens COVID-19 placed on families, communities of color also grappled with heightened xenophobia and racism. Yet, adolescents also found silver linings in the form of spending time with family and engaging in activities promoting relaxation and leisure. The present study examined parent-adolescent relationship quality (RQ) as a moderator of the relations of Latinx youth's environment (i.e., racial-ethnic discrimination, COVID-19 stress, and COVID-19 silver linings) on their anxiety and depressive symptoms, both concurrently and six months later. Participan

Study Abroad Angst: A Literature Review on the Mental Health of International Students During COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique and unprecedented challenges for international students, those studying at institutions of higher education outside of their home countries, due to their distinct circumstances and vulnerabilities. This literature review examines the multifaceted mental health burdens they experienced and highlights the need for targeted support and interventions. METHODS: A rigorous search across three databases (i.e., PubMed, PsycINFO, and ERIC) yielded 50 empirical studies for inclusion in this literature review. A six-phase thematic analysis framework was

The Aggrieved Entitlement Scale: A New Measure for an Old Problem.

Aggrieved entitlement (AE) refers to the defensiveness and hostility majority-group members feel toward the outgroup in response to a perceived threat of lost privileges. Over the last couple of years, AE has garnered a great deal of attention in the media as well as in the empirical literature because of its connection with extremism and violence against minority groups. Yet, to date, research quantifying and measuring the construct of AE is scant. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap. Across two studies (N1 = 813; N2 = 1,100) we explore the factor structure of the Aggrieved Entitlement S

Intersectional violence and the health of migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian emigrant women abroad: a scoping review.

Migratory flows have expanded with the increased movement of women from Latin America and other continents to Brazil, in addition to the emigration of Brazilian women to the Global North. Considering the context of the feminization of migration and the importance of understanding women's oppression in the face of displacement, this scoping review analyzes, from an intersectional perspective, scientific evidence on health and expressions of violence against migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian women abroad. The adopted databases are VHL, Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Sci

Gomastahs, Peons, Police and Chowdranies: The Role of Indian Subordinate in the Functioning of the Lock Hospitals and the Indian Contagious Diseases Act, 1805 to 1889.

Recent scholarship on the social history of health and medicine in colonial India has moved beyond enclavist or hegemonic aspects of imperial medicine and has rather focused on the role of Indian intermediaries and the fractured nature of colonial hegemony. Drawing inspiration from this scholarship, the article highlights the significance of the Indian subordinates in the lock hospital system in the nineteenth century Madras Presidency. This study focuses on a class of Indian subordinates called the "gomastah", who were employed to detect clandestine prostitution in Madras to control the sprea

The Persian COVID stress scales (Persian-CSS) and COVID-19-related stress reactions in patients with obsessive-compulsive and anxiety disorders.

The COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were designed to assess stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging evidence indicates that people with anxiety disorders (ADs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be more negatively impacted by COVID-19 than those with mood disorders or healthy individuals. Accordingly, this study sought to validate the Persian CSS (Persian-CSS) and to compare COVID-19-related stress reactions among patients with specific ADs and OCD. Patients with OCD (n = 300) and ADs (n = 310) completed the Persian-CSS and other scales developed to assess anxiety-related traits a

Crossing borders, facing barriers: a rights-based narrative review of HIV care access among African migrants living with HIV.

International migration has long shaped economies and public health. In today's globalized world, migrant health is increasingly a critical equity issue. This narrative review focuses on healthcare access for international migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who are living with HIV. We address the question: "How do legal, policy, and socio-structural factors influence access to HIV care for African migrants, and what rights-based strategies can ensure health equity for this population?" We synthesize peer-reviewed and grey literature (2005-early 2025) using the Availability, Accessibility, Accept

Co-rumination and intrapersonal cognitive processes predict distress: Longitudinal evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perseverative thinking and catastrophizing have well established associations with fear and distress. However, less is known about the impact of interpersonal dynamics, such as co-rumination, on these intrapersonal cognitive processes and subsequent stress. The present study addresses this knowledge gap. A sample of 433 adults from across the United States was recruited online and completed measures of co-rumination, perseverative thinking, catastrophizing, and demographic characteristics early in the COVID-19 pandemic, and the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) at six month follow up. Co-rumination, p

Did the popularization of the Internet impact Chinese citizens' attitude towards foreign countries? An empirical study based on two surveys.

Citizens' attitudes towards foreign countries are considered an important factor in making foreign policy. This also holds in China, where public opinion is given significant weight in foreign policy-making. On the other hand, the media serves as a gateway for citizens to access the outside world, shaping their attitudes towards foreign countries. The rise of the Internet since the mid-2000s has brought about radical changes in the media landscape. The Internet, characterized by its loose control and the strong patriotic sentiment among netizens, is viewed as a breeding ground for popular nati

The latent and item structure of COVID-19 fear: A comparison of four COVID-19 fear questionnaires using SEM and network analyses.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), several reports have shown that fear relating to COVID-19 has sharply increased. To measure fear of COVID-19, various questionnaires have been developed in parallel. However, fear concerning COVID-19 is not necessarily a uniform construct and the different questionnaires may cover diverse aspects. To examine the underlying structure of fear of COVID-19, we conducted structural equation modelling and network analyses on four scales in an online convenience sample (N = 829). Particularly, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (Ahorsu et al., 2020),

On the importance of communication, advocacy, and information accuracy in destigmatizing mpox disease.

Disease names that convey the location of discovery, the discovering scientists, the species of discovery, or the most impacted populations have been increasingly recognized as problematic-often leading to or amplifying xenophobia, disrepute, and stigma. In this context, in 2022 the World Health Organization proposed naming diseases after their causative pathogen or symptomatology instead. This recent guidance has been retrospectively applied to a disease at the center of an epidemic rife with intolerance and misinformation, predominantly affecting the already-stigmatized LGBTQ + community: mp
