Xerostomia in older adults: a longitudinal study.

Although xerostomia in older adults has received substantial research attention, there have been few longitudinal studies of non-patient populations. Consequently, little is known about the incidence or course of this condition among this group. This paper reports the results of a longitudinal study designed to address these issues. In 1989, data on xerostomia were collected from 907 randomly-selected community dwelling adults aged 50 years and over. Three years later, 611 (71% of those presumed to be alive) were followed-up and data on xerostomia collected again. At baseline, 15.5% of these 6

Xerostomia and glossodynia in patients with autoimmune disorders.

Xerostomia presents a difficult challenge for the clinician to manage and a serious problem for the afflicted patient. Patients with dysfunctional or hypofunctional salivary or lacrimal glands suffer considerably both emotionally and physically. Because of the ever-increasing geriatric population, health practitioners can expect to encounter a substantial number of patients with xerostomia or salivary gland disorders. Early detection and appropriate management will improve the quality of these patient's lives.

Radiation-induced xerostomia and cariogenic dietary habits.

PURPOSE: Despite the availability of various prevention methods, dental caries continue to be diagnosed in patients receiving head and neck radiotherapy (RT). Since conventional approaches do not evaluate posttreatment alterations in dietary behaviors, we aimed to assess the influence of radiation-induced xerostomia on post-RT cariogenic dietary habits in patients. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients completed the Xerostomia Questionnaire (XQ) and answered questions regarding daily cariogenic food and beverage (CFB) intake, daily tooth brushing, fluoride application, and subjective total taste acui

Two possible cases of erenumab-induced xerostomia.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Erenumab is a monoclonal antibody for the prophylactic treatment of migraine. We describe the first cases of xerostomia probably induced by this drug. CASE SUMMARY: We present two patients diagnosed with chronic migraine who started treatment with erenumab and presented with dry mouth after the first and second dose. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Xerostomia is not described as an adverse reaction in the drug's technical datasheet. A search was made in PubMed including 'erenumab', 'fremanezumab', 'galcanezumab', 'xerostomia', and no results were found. It is necessa

[Painful palate and xerostomia after using paroxetine].

This article presents the case of a 58-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus type 2 who, for one and a half years, had been using paroxetine, a specific serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, to reduce a depression. She complained of xerostomia, dry eyes, and pain of the palate. In the middle of the hard palate a circumscribed, erythemous mucosal lesion was observed. This painful spot had developed, according to the woman, virtually immediately after she had begun to use the medication with paroxetine. The salivary flow rates were reduced when compared with well-known reference values. The diagnosis w

Dietary nitrate supplementation prevents radiotherapy-induced xerostomia.

Management of salivary gland hypofunction caused by irradiation (IR) therapy for head and neck cancer remains lack of effective treatments. Salivary glands, especially the parotid gland, actively uptake dietary nitrate and secrete it into saliva. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary nitrate on the prevention and treatment of IR-induced parotid gland hypofunction in miniature pigs, and elucidated the underlying mechanism in human parotid gland cells. We found that nitrate administration prevented IR-induced parotid gland damage in a dose-dependent manner, by maintaining the function of i

Preventive Effect of Metformin in Radiation-Induced Xerostomia.

Radiation induced structural damage of salivary gland including reducing acinar cell and fibrosis. These changes result in hypofunction of salivary gland which has a significant impact on the quality of life of head and neck cancer patients who treated with radiotherapy. Nevertheless, no preventive method has been found. Metformin, a diabetes drug, has recently attracted considerable attention because it can cause tissue regeneration by anti-inflammatory action and influencing stem cells. This study examined the effects of metformin on salivary gland tissue damage caused by radiation therapy.

High anticholinergic burden and hyposalivation and xerostomia in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to study the association between high anticholinergic burden and hyposalivation and xerostomia among older people. BACKGROUND: Anticholinergic drugs have been shown to cause xerostomia and hyposalivation. Yet there are few studies on the association between anticholinergic burden and hyposalivation and xerostomia in the elderly. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of community-dwelling older people (n = 321, mean age 81.6 years) from the Oral health GeMS study. Participants provided salivary samples and xerostomia was determined with a questionnaire. T

Anticholinergic Burden and Xerostomia in Critical Care Settings.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have established the association of medications with anticholinergic adverse effects and xerostomia, anticholinergic burden and xerostomia in critical care settings are poorly characterized. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of medication burdens associated with anticholinergic adverse effects, particularly the occurrence of xerostomia (dry mouth) in a critical care setting. In addition, this study explored the correlation between the timing of the first instance of xerostomia and the administration timing of medication known to have

Prevalence of xerostomia with or without overactive bladder symptoms.

Overactive bladder (OAB) occurs idiopathic or secondary to a neurological cause. In addition, OAB may also occur due to xerostomia, because it causes excessive drinking of water. If xerostomia is one of the causes of OAB, treating xerostomia may be effective. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of xerostomia with or without overactive bladder symptoms. A web-based questionnaire was administered to investigate the prevalence of xerostomia with or without overactive bladder symptoms. The survey included questions concerning age, gender, medical history, medications, OAB symptoms by th

Xerostomia in geriatric patients: a burgeoning global concern.

Saliva plays a key role in maintaining oral homeostasis, function, and health. The prevalence of xerostomia and its consequences are rising due to the increasing aging population, the effects of some systemic diseases, medical management, and commonly-prescribed medications that reduce saliva production. When salivary function is diminished, patients are at a greater risk of developing caries, discomfort in wearing dentures, and opportunistic diseases, such as candidiasis. The psychosocial aspects of xerostomia can range from a mild effect on self-rated oral health to frustration, embarrassmen

The application of a night guard for sleep-related xerostomia.

OBJECTIVE: The usefulness of a night guard for nocturnal xerostomia was investigated. STUDY DESIGN: A controlled clinical trial was conducted, and the primary outcome measure was the satisfaction with the night guard in subjective improvement of the sensation of nocturnal dryness. The night guard device was fabricated with a 1.5-mm-thick ethylene vinyl acetate sheet, which covered the dental arch and the hard palate, and did not possess a reservoir for retaining a saliva substitute. RESULTS: Following completion of 2-week treatment, substantial improvement was reported by the treatment group

How much saliva is enough for avoidance of xerostomia?

Xerostomia, the subjective sensation of dry mouth, occurs when the salivary flow rate is less than the rate of fluid loss from the mouth by evaporation and by absorption of water through the oral mucosa. Evaporation can only occur during mouth-breathing but could reach a maximum rate of about 0.21 ml/min at rest, although normally it would be much less. Water absorption through the mucosa can occur because saliva has one sixth the osmotic pressure of extracellular fluid, thus creating a water gradient across the mucosa. The maximum absorption rate is calculated to be about 0.19 ml/min, declini

The association of xerostomia and inadequate intake in older adults.

Recent studies indicate that nearly one in five older adults has xerostomia (dry mouth). Salivary gland dysfunction and/or inadequate saliva increases the difficulty of these older adults in obtaining proper nutrition. Problems in lubricating, masticating, tolerating, tasting, and swallowing food contribute notably to the complex physiological and psychological manifestations of aging. To our knowledge, the literature has not demonstrated an association between xerostomia and malnutrition in the elderly. We randomly selected 67 older adults from institutionalized and free-living geriatric popu
