Yersinia pestis infection in three dogs.

Yersinia pestis infection was diagnosed in 3 dogs. Clinical signs included lethargy (3 dogs), pyrexia (2 dogs), and a purulent skin lesion in the cervical region (2 dogs). Yersinia pestis infection is a potentially fatal zoonotic disease of human beings. Human cases have resulted from contact with infected domestic cats; however, the risk of human infection from contact with infected domestic dogs is unknown. Dogs frequently are exposed to Y pestis in areas in which there are plague epizootics; however, clinical illness in dogs is rare. In the western United States, where Yersinia pestis is en

[Staged treatment and follow-up of patients with yersinia infections].

Basing on the data obtained on immunopathogenetic and lipid metabolism features of intestinal yersiniosis and pseudotuberculosis in children, the authors offer variants of etiotropic and pathogenetic treatment specific for certain stages of the above diseases which are able to reduce the rate of aggravations, recurrences and complications by 10-12%. Long-term follow-up showed that unfavourable outcomes of yersiniosis are not infrequent this urging the necessity of 6-12-month follow-up of the convalescents.

Yersinia enterocolitica infection in diarrheal patients.

In this study, we hoped to provide valuable clinical information on yersiniosis for clinicians. Two thousand six hundred stool samples were collected from in- and outpatients with diarrhea, which were tested with both culture method and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In total, 188 positive samples were detected by RT-PCR (178) and culture method (160), while the incidence was about 7.23%. The detection rate of RT-PCR was significantly higher than culture method and a higher incidence in autumn-winter was also noticeably identified than in spring-summer. Infection sources mostly

Intussusception associated with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection.

Intussusception associated with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection was developed in three boys; two of them had a history of drinking untreated water. All intussusceptions were localized at the ileocolic region, and all patients completely recovered with Gastrografin enema and supportive treatment without complication and operation.

Granulomatous hepatitis in Yersinia enterocolitica infection.

Liver involvement in infections with Yersinia enterocolitica or Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is apparently rare. In a 69-year-old male patient with acute Yersinia enterocolitica infection with positive faecal culture and a serum titre of 1/1280, the liver tests were slightly abnormal. A liver biopsy revealed granulomatous hepatitis. Follow-up after six months revealed normal liver function and histology.

Circulating immune complexes in Yersinia infection.

The occurrence of circulating immune complexes (CIC) was studied in 9 patients with Yersinia arthritis and 7 with Yersinia enteritis (YE) without extraintestinal symptoms by the platelet-iodinated protein A (PIPA) technique and by a solid phase Clq-binding enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. CIC were detected by both techniques in all the patients with Yersinia arthritis during the acute disease and in 3 of them after recovery. CIC were also found in 5 of the 7 patients with uncomplicated YE, suggesting that CIC were associated with YE irrespective of the development of arthritis.

Ocular inflammation associated with Yersinia infection.

We studied characteristics of ocular inflammation associated with Yersinia infection in 23 patients. After an acute onset with fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, 22 patients developed arthritis, 11 patients developed myalgia, 11 patients developed Reiter's syndrome, 17 patients developed acute anterior uveitis, and nine patients developed conjunctivitis. Sacroiliitis was found in 12 patients. The patients had high erythrocyte sedimentation rates, leukocytosis, and lack of antinuclear antibodies and rheumatoid factor. All 17 patients tested had HLA-B27 antigen. The patients with acute anterio

The histopathology of enteric infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

The gross and microscopic pathologic changes in 70 cases of serologically proven enteric infections with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are presented. The highest incidence was in young males, and the commonest infecting organism belonged to serologic O-group I. Clinically, the illness resembled acute appendicitis, but the most consistent finding at laparotomy was mesentric lymphadenitis. Surgical specimens examined included 69 mesenteric lymph nodes, 18 appendices, five terminal ileums, and two ascending colons. Histologically, four stages of the disease were identified, leading to the formation

Bioluminescent tracing of a Yersinia pestis pCD1+-mutant and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in subcutaneously infected mice.

Yersinia pestis has evolved from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype O:1b. A typical Y. pestis contains three plasmids: pCD1, pMT1 and pPCP1. However, some isolates only harbor pCD1 (pCD1+-mutant). Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis share a common plasmid (pCD1 or pYV), but little is known about whether Y. pseudotuberculosis exhibited plague-inducing potential before it was evolved into Y. pestis. Here, the luxCDABE::Tn5::kan was integrated into the chromosome of the pCD1+-mutant, Y. pseudotuberculosis or Escherichia coli K12 to construct stable bioluminescent strains for investigation of th
