Diversity of Bacterial Endophytes of Maize (Zea mays) and Their Functional Potential for Micronutrient Biofortification.

Microorganisms due, to their immense metabolic diversity, have the potential to augment the uptake of iron and zinc in addition to other important nutrients in plants. In the present work, 129 different strains of endophytic bacteria were retrieved from stems and leaves of maize. Qualitative screening of these endophytes showed that 24.5% of these isolates were siderophore producers, while 14% could solubilize insoluble zinc compounds and 33% of them had phytase activity. Based on zinc solubilization efficiency and siderophore production ability, 10 isolates each from zinc solubilizers and sid

The Role of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase-Protein Kinase in C4 Photosynthesis: Insights from Zea mays Mutant Analysis.

Understanding the regulation of enzyme activity involved in photosynthesis is essential for engineering enhanced carbon fixation in crops. In C4 plants, the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC, EC 4.1.1.31) is one of the most abundant leaf enzymes and plays an essential role in photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation. The enzyme also plays a key role in central metabolism (e.g., providing intermediates to the citric acid cycle) and therefore must be highly regulated to coordinate its activity. The regulation of PEPC activity can occur allosterically by glucose 6-phosphate activat

Lead Toxicity-Mediated Growth and Metabolic Alterations at Early Seedling Stages of Maize (Zea mays L.).

To investigate the toxic effects of lead (Pb) on key metabolic activities essential for proper germination and seedling growth of maize seeds, experiments were carried out with different levels of Pb (0 to 120 mg of Pb L-1 as PbCl2) applied through growth medium to two maize hybrids H-3310S and H-6724. The research findings indicated that growth and metabolic activities were adversely affected by increased Pb contamination in growth medium; however, a slow increase in these parameters was recorded with increasing time from 0 to 120 h. Protease activity decreased with an increase in the level o

Translocation of CdS nanoparticles in maize (Zea mays L.) plant and its effect on metabolic response.

Cadmium sulfide nanomaterials are of great concern because of their potential toxicity and unavoidable releases due to multiple commercial applications of nanoparticles (NPs). Commercial NPs act as mediators of damage to plant cells and pose potential toxicity to plants and human health. In the current study, investigated the phytotoxicology, absorption, translocation, antioxidant enzyme activity, and metabolic profiles of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings exposed to different hydroponic treatments for fifteen days. The different concentrations of CdS NPs (3, 15, 30, 50, and 100 mg/L), 0.3 mg/L Cd

Mutation of the nuclear pore complex component, aladin1, disrupts asymmetric cell division in Zea mays (maize).

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) regulates the movement of macromolecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm. Dysfunction of many components of the NPC results in human genetic diseases, including triple A syndrome (AAAS) as a result of mutations in ALADIN. Here, we report a nonsense mutation in the maize ortholog, aladin1 (ali1-1), at the orthologous amino acid residue of an AAAS allele from humans, alters plant stature, tassel architecture, and asymmetric divisions of subsidiary mother cells (SMCs). Crosses with the stronger nonsense allele ali1-2 identified complex allele interactions for plan

Influences of high-level atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury on methylmercury accumulation in maize (Zea mays L.).

Maize (Zea mays L.) leaves play an important role in stomatal uptake and surface adsorption of atmospheric mercury (Hg). However, the influence of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in maize plants is poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a field open-top chambers (OTCs) experiment and a soil Hg-enriched experiment to investigate the response of MeHg accumulation in maize tissues to different GEM levels in the air. Maize upper leaves had a higher average MeHg concentration (0.21 ± 0.08 ng g-1) than bottom leaves (0.15 ± 0.05 ng g-1) in the

Responses of Nonprotein Thiols to Stress of Vanadium and Mercury in Maize (Zea mays L.) Seedlings.

The heavy metal pollution in ecosystems is of increasing global concern. This study investigated firstly the responses of phytochelatins (PCs), glutathione (GSH) and other nonprotein thiols (NPT) in maize seedlings under vanadium (V), mercury (Hg) or their combined stress. With V or V-Hg combined stress, the contents of PCs, GSH and NPT in shoots and roots both increased with increasing the V stress level, and reached the maximum when the V stress level was 5 mg/L. Accumulation of V in all organs of maize seedlings was in sequence as follows: roots ≫ shoots, while Hg inhibited the accumulation

Salicylic Acid and Sodium Salicylate Alleviate Cadmium Toxicity to Different Extents in Maize (Zea mays L.).

The role of salicylic acid in Cd tolerance has attracted more attention recently but no information is available on the efficiency of different forms of salicylic acid. The aim was thus to investigate whether both the acid and salt forms of salicylic acid provide protection against Cd stress and to compare their mode of action. Young maize plants were grown under controlled environmental conditions. One group of 10-day-old seedlings were treated with 0.5 mM SA or NaSA for 1 day then half of the pants were treated with 0.5 mM Cd for 1 day. Another group of seedlings was treated with 0.5 mM CdSO

Elevated CO2 mitigates NaCl stress associated with physiological and anatomical adaptations in maize (Zea mays L.).

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are rising and projected to reach ∼800 μmol mol-1 by 2100, while soil salinity is expanding globally, yet their combined impact on crops remains unclear. In particular, the interactive effects of elevated CO2 and salinity on maize (Zea mays L.) physiology and development are poorly understood. The physiological and anatomical responses of maize to elevated CO2 (800 μmol mol-1) and NaCl stress (0-150 mmol L-1) were investigated through a controlled factorial experiment. Results showed that elevated CO2 increased net photosynthetic rate, water-use efficiency, and b

Unraveling the Food Matrix Components Underlying Glycemic Response in Yellow Popcorn Hybrids (Zea mays var. 'Everta').

Most popcorn studies have focused on individual components, while the interactions among phytochemicals, particle size, and glycemic response remain poorly understood. This study evaluated five popcorn hybrids and one commercial sample, expanded by hot air and separated into fine and coarse fractions, to identify matrix components associated with estimated glycemic index (eGI). In vitro eGI, dietary fiber, antioxidant activity, phenolics, hydroxycinnamic acid amides (HCAA), and phytosterols were evaluated. Hybrids showed low eGI values (45.6-48.3) compared with commercial popcorn, while Popcor

Zinc sulfide nanoparticles regulate cadmium toxicity in maize (Zea mays L.) by improving Cd/Zn homeostasis.

In the current study, we synthesized nano zinc sulfide (nZnS) and studied the effects of root zone (RZ) and foliar application (FS) of nZnS (0 and 50 mg/L) on cadmium (Cd) stressed maize (0 and 1 mM CdCl2) using completely randomized design (CRD). After 20 d of nZnS supplementation, growth and biochemical responses were recorded. The study highlights the critical issue of Cd stress in maize and investigates how nZnS influences plant tolerance mechanisms. We explored the novelty of application of RZ and FS of nZnS, focusing on its role in Cd/Zn homeostasis, growth and stress resilience. The RZ

Seed coating with micronutrients improves germination, growth, yield and microelement nutrients of maize (Zea mays L.).

Soil and foliar application are the most widely used methods for adding micronutrients to maize. High quality micronutrient fertilizers, however, are difficult to obtain in developing countries; micronutrient seed coatings are an attractive and practical alternative. We applied this approach to maize (Zea mays L.) to demonstrate the effects of boron (B), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn) sulfates on maize germination, vigor, seedling growth, seed yield and seed quality as well as on seed microelement concentration. Seed coating was tested on three representative Chinese
