Zoonosis: a comprehensive database of zoonotic pathogens.

Emerging infectious diseases pose a significant threat to global public health and economic security, with zoonoses accounting for a substantial proportion. Livestock such as cattle and sheep are critical reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens and play a key role in transmitting these pathogens to humans and other animals, including dogs and wildlife, due to their close interaction with diverse populations. In this study, we introduce Zoonosis (http://zoonosis.cn/zoonosis/), a comprehensive database that integrates data on pathogens, including Brucella, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Bacillus anth

Classics revisited: C. J. van der Horst on pregnancy and menstruation in elephant shrews.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation occurs only in higher primates, some bats, the spiny mouse and the elephant shrew. Our knowledge of the latter species is due to work by C. J. van der Horst. FINDINGS: Changes in the uterine stroma are initially similar in fertile and infertile cycles and are confined to a small area. In pregnant animals, the presence of the conceptus causes further development to an implantation chamber. In infertile cycles an outgrowth of highly glandular stroma (a polyp) appears. With decline of the corpora lutea it is shed in a process equivalent to menstruation. Van der Horst des

Diaphragm: A vital respiratory muscle in mammals.

The diaphragm is a respiratory muscle that is primarily responsible for the respiratory function in normal individuals. In mammals, the diaphragm muscle has been studied from the early days of zoology, comparative and experimental anatomy, physiology, medicine, physics, and philosophy. However, even with these early advances in knowledge pertaining to the diaphragm, comprehensive morphological data on the diaphragm are still incomplete. In this review, we summarize the beginnings of the morphological description of the diaphragm, and we describe the current status of the known morphological an

Microstructure and development of the dermal ossicles of Antarctopelta oliveroi (Dinosauria, Ankylosauria): A complex morphogenetic system deciphered through three-dimensional X-ray microtomography.

Ankylosaurs were a group of heavily armored non-avian dinosaurs (Dinosauria, Ankylosauria), represented by a relatively abundant fossil record from the Cretaceous of North and South America. Their dermal skeleton was characterized by large osteoderms whose development and functional role have been largely investigated. However, interstitial small ossicles, forming between these osteoderms, have been far more overlooked and it remains unknown whether they were formed through the ossification of a preexisting fibrous matrix of connective tissue (i.e., metaplasia) or by a cell-induced differentia

Symbiogenesis: the hidden face of Constantin Merezhkowsky.

Constantin Merezhkowsky is celebrated today for his theory of symbiogenesis, postulated in the early decades of the twentieth century, particularly that chloroplasts were symbiotic cyanophytes (cyanobacteria). While biologists point singularly to what they see as his heroic achievement, its neglect and subsequent rediscovery, we introduce a broader and much more complex perspective on his science, his troubled life and career. We present a view of Merezhkowsky as zoologist, anthropologist, botanist, philosopher, and novelist. We explain the genesis of his theory of the origin of chloroplasts a

Ichthyological research in the Sorocaba River basin, State of Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil: trajectory of knowledge, advances, and future directions.

Ichthyological knowledge of the Sorocaba River basin dates to the 19th century, with initial surveys by Johann Natterer. These were followed by expeditions at the turn of the 20th century by researchers from the University of São Paulo's (USP) Zoology Museum, which resulted in the description of five new species. After a hiatus of nearly a century, research resumed in 1992. Here, we present a comprehensive review of 64 publications to assess the current state of knowledge on the basin's ichthyofauna. The most frequently studied topics were community ecology (34.4%), followed by species invento

Ethnozoological study of animals based medicine used by traditional healers and indigenous inhabitants in the adjoining areas of Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, India.

BACKGROUND: India has an immense faunal, floral, as well as cultural diversity with many ethnic communities who are primarily dependent on the traditional medicinal system for their primary health care. Documentation and evaluation of this indigenous remedial knowledge may be helpful to establish new drugs for human health. The present study is intended to look into different zootherapeutic medicinal uses in the traditional health care system among the native inhabitants adjacent to the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, India. METHODS: Field survey was carried out from March 2015 to August 20

A landmark-free morphometrics pipeline for high-resolution phenotyping: application to a mouse model of Down syndrome.

Characterising phenotypes often requires quantification of anatomical shape. Quantitative shape comparison (morphometrics) traditionally uses manually located landmarks and is limited by landmark number and operator accuracy. Here, we apply a landmark-free method to characterise the craniofacial skeletal phenotype of the Dp1Tyb mouse model of Down syndrome and a population of the Diversity Outbred (DO) mouse model, comparing it with a landmark-based approach. We identified cranial dysmorphologies in Dp1Tyb mice, especially smaller size and brachycephaly (front-back shortening), homologous to t

Characterization of Rabies virus isolated from canids and identification of the main wild canid host in Northeastern Brazil.

The rabies cases in dogs and wild canids in Northeastern Brazil are a public and animal health problem. This paper describes the identities of the coding region of the N-gene of Rabies virus (RABV) isolated in canids from Northeastern Brazil. The genetic tree generated using the sequence data described here divided the cluster BRAZILAN CANIDS into two subclusters (DOG-RELATED STRAINS and WILD CANID-RELATED STRAINS) with identities greater than those already described. The two subclusters are sub-divided into geographic groups related to the origin of the isolates, suggesting a long-standing ec

Aspects of forensic entomology in forensic medicine.

ntomology, as a vast scientific discipline of zoology, deals with the study of insects, which are an integral part of the ecosystem of our planet and are closely linked to the activity and life cycle of all organisms, including humans. As a result of this natural connection, insects often become a direct “living witness” of a crime and thus an invaluable part of the evidence in a comprehensive forensic investigation, which in such cases necessarily includes a specialized field of science - forensic entomology. The goals of forensic entomology include comprehensive analysis of entom

Determinants of Cardiac Growth and Size.

Within the realm of zoological study, the question of how an organism reaches a specific size has been largely unexplored. Recently, studies performed to understand the regulation of organ size have revealed that both cellular signals and external cues contribute toward the determination of total cell mass within each organ. The establishment of final organ size requires the precise coordination of cell growth, proliferation, and survival throughout development and postnatal life. In the mammalian heart, the regulation of size is biphasic. During development, cardiomyocyte proliferation predom

Immunoprophylactic Potential of a Cocktail of Three Low Molecular Weight Antigens of Leishmania donovani along with Various Adjuvants Against Experimental Visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no vaccine available for any form of leishmaniasis for human use, including visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The treatment relies on drugs associated with severe toxic side effects and increased parasite drug resistance. At present, there is a strong need to develop and implement a successful vaccine against this disease. Therefore, we evaluated immunoprophylactic potential of a cocktail of low molecular weight antigens along with various adjuvants. METHODS: The three antigens (2015, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh), 31kDa, 36 kDa and 51 kDa of

Beyond eugenics: the forgotten scandal of hybridizing humans and apes.

This paper examines the available evidence on one of the most radical ideas in the history of eugenics and utopianism. In the mid-1920s, the zoology professor Ilia Ivanov submitted to the Soviet government a project for hybridizing humans and apes by means of artificial insemination. He received substantial financing and organized expeditions to Africa to catch apes for his experiments. His project caused an international sensation. The American Association for the Advancement of Atheism announced its fund-raising campaign to support Ivanov's project but gave it a scandalously racist interpret

[From teratology to mythology: ancient legends].

The mythology of the Greeks and Romans is full of monsters of fiction: giants, cyclops, centaurs, hydras, Gorgons… The accounts of travelers, reproduced in the Natural History of Pline l'Ancien reported the existence, in distant countries, of men with a dog's head (baboons), of men with a single tall foot (sciapode), beings whose face is embedded in the chest (or acephala blemmyes), to which must be added a wide variety of men with no mouth, no nose, or equipped with giant ears or feet turned backwards, as well as hermaphrodites. Teratology reports on monstrous births, which have constituted t

Hans H. Ussing--scientific work: contemporary significance and perspectives.

As a zoologist, Hans H. Ussing began his scientific career by studying the marine plankton fauna in East Greenland. This brought him in contact with August Krogh at the time George de Hevesy, Niels Bohr and Krogh planned the application of artificial radioactive isotopes for studying the dynamic state of the living organism. Following his studies of protein turnover of body tissues with deuterium-labeled amino acids, Ussing initiated a new era of studies of transport across epithelial membranes. Theoretical difficulties in the interpretation of tracer fluxes resulted in novel concepts such as

A brief history of Guinea worm research in the modern period, 1698-1931.

Guinea worm is a debilitating waterborne parasitic disease with a long history. This paper examines the ways guinea worm was understood in English-language scientific literature between 1688 and 1931. In the early eighteenth century, guinea worm was principally understood by English-speaking physicians as an exotic wonder of faraway lands. It became viewed as an African disease over the course of the eighteenth century, as transatlantic slavery exposed enslaved Africans to infection with the worm. Worms acquired in West Africa often emerged after arrival to the Caribbean, where the disease bri
