A zygomycotic (phycomycotic) orbital cellulitis developed in a healthy 9-year-old boy. Because of the involved tissue's unfamiliar histopathologic features, an initial diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma was made and appropriate treatment was delayed for more than six months. The patient's slowly progressive form of zygomycosis was clinically and morphologically similar to that described in previously recorded cases. All three cases occurred in otherwise healthy children living within the United States. Their involved tissues had mixed histopathologic features of chronic granulomatous entomoph…

A case of zygomycosis involving the maxillary sinus in a normal host and mimicking paranasal malignancy is presented. Computed tomographic images showing destruction of adjoining bony structures and histologic features of fungi are described and presented. A successful outcome was achieved with amphotericin B irrigation and parenteral amphotericin B. Nasal biopsy should be advised by both radiologists and clinicians in all cases of lesions that look like malignancy in the sinus areas before a treatment modality is initiated.

AIM: Zygomycosis is a severe angioinvasive infection caused by Zygomycetes. We retrospectively investigated 16 cases of zygomycosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of patients, who had been followed between 2004 and 2010 in 8 tertiary-care teaching hospitals, were reviewed. Demographic characteristics, underlying diseases, and clinical signs and symptoms of the patients, as well as diagnostic methods, data obtained by radiological imaging methods, and the therapies, were recorded. Therapeutic approaches, antifungal agents and duration of use, and the characteristics of the cases were identif…

Zygomycetes are filamentous fungi with a worldwide distribution. This class of fungi encompasses two orders, i.e. the Mucorales and the Ento … osis-processes that result in subsequent necrosis of involved tissues. Risk factors associated with zygomycosis include prolonged neutropenia and use of corticosteroids, solid organ or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, AIDS, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, iron chelation with deferoxamine, burns, wounds, malnutrition, extremes of age, and intrave …

The severe immunosuppression associated with HIV infection increases susceptibility to opportunistic fungi. We describe a primary gangrenous cutaneous infection caused by Rhizopus arrhizus in an HIV-infected intravenous narcotic user. In addition, we review nine reported cases of zygomycosis in HIV-infected patients and discuss the frequency and outcome of zygomycosis in HIV infection. Eight of 10 patients were intravenous drug users. Cutaneous infection occurred in four patients. Another case was associated with drug-induced neutropenia. With treatment, 60% of the patients recovered. HIV-indu…

A definitive diagnosis of zygomycosis caused by Mucorales can be made by histopathological examination with or without isolation of the fungus from the same site. Histopathological examination of the tissues affected typically shows characteristic broad, hyaline, ribbon-like, irregular fungal hyphae with wide-angle branching, accompanied by tissue necrosis and angioinvasion of the fungi. Tissue invasion by the fungal hyphae as seen by microscopy is essential to establish the diagnosis. Fungal elements can be stained with Gomori methenamine-silver, periodic acid-Schiff or Calcoflour white stain…

Zygomycoses are very rare invasive fungal infections (IFI). They primarily occur in the immunocompromised patients and are associated with a high mortality. During the last years, a rising incidence of zygomycosis in patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been reported, which is probably a part of the trend in the incidence of mould infections that has been going on for decades. Difficulty in diagnosis, especially concerning the differentiation of zygomycosis from the far more common aspergillosis, additionally hampers a reliable assessment of the in…

OBJECTIVE: We describe the CT appearance of pulmonary zygomycosis (mucormycosis), an opportunistic infection typically occurring in immunocompromised patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients with pulmonary zygomycosis imaged with CT were reviewed, seven at initial diagnosis and one with a subsequent complication. The appearance, number, and location of pulmonary lesions and the presence of pleural effusions and extrapulmonary involvement were assessed. Rim enhancement, air bronchograms, the halo sign, air crescent sign, cavitation, and central low attenuation suggesting necrosis were r…

Fungal infection is relatively common among renal transplant recipients from developing countries. Mucormycosis, also known as zygomycosis, is one of the most serious fungal infections in these patients. The most common of presentation is rhino-cerebral. Isolated involvement of a renal allograft is very rare. A thorough search of literature and our medical records yielded a total of 24 cases with mucormycosis of the transplanted kidney. There was an association with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and anti-rejection treatment in these patients and most of these transplants were performed in th…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Zygomycosis is an emerging infection worldwide. Pulmonary zygomycosis (PZ) is uncommon with only few reported series from India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of PZ diagnosed on histopathology between 1995 and 2008 were included. Clinical and imageological findings were noted in all cases. Routine hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were studied to assess the pathology; Gomori's methenamine silver (GMS), periodic acid Schiff were done for delineating fungal morphology. Culture reports were collected wherever available. Treatment and outcome details were noted.

Zygomycosis are rare fungal infections occurring mainly in immunocompromised patients. To date only 160 cases have been published in transplant recipients. We report four new cases of zygomycosis in transplant recipients illustrating the large clinical spectrum of this infection: one disseminated infection with heart involvement and one rhinocerebral infection with dissemination in two bone marrow transplant recipients, one cutaneous infection in a liver and one pulmonary infection in a kidney recipient. All cases, except the cutaneous infection that was accessible to surgical resection and a …
