Plasma concentration of beta thromboglobulin was used as an index of in vivo platelet activation in 36 patients after acute myocardial infarction. Twelve patients had diabetes, seven had pulmonary oedema or cardiogenic shock (pump failure) or both, and 17 had uncomplicated infarcts. On the first day of admission, concentrations of beta thromboglobulin were higher in the patients with diabetes and those with pump failure than in those with uncomplicated infarcts. Thrombospondin, beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 were measured by radioimmunoassay in fluids from 50 human breast cysts. beta-Thromboglobulin concentrations were less than 4-330 ng/ml (median 13.5 ng/ml), while normal plasma contained 14-80 ng/ml. The detection of elevated fibrinopeptide A (FPA) level in a patient with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome complicated with cerebral infarction prompted us to examine FPA level in 3 other patients with the syndrome. FPA level significantly increased in all patients. Fibrinopeptide B beta 15-42 (FPB beta 15-42) level was increased in two, and both beta-thromboglobulin (beta TG) and platelet factor 4 (PF4) levels were elevated in one patient. These results suggest coagulation abnormalities in patients with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

The levels of thromboxane B2, prostaglandin 6-keto F1 alpha (PG F1 alpha), thrombocytic factor IV (TF IV), and beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) were measured in 66 patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis concurrent with acute recurrent myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris. There was a substantial increase in thromboxane B2 activity and a less significant elevation of PG F1 alpha, as well as a rise of TF IV and beta-TG.
