[Contact allergies to CN and CS ("tear gas") in participants in demonstrations].

56 occasional demonstrators were interviewed with regard to former skin contact with omega-chloroacetophenone (CN) or ortho-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS). 33 persons (59%) reported skin reactions of various kinds. Patch testing with CN, the structurally related preservative chloroacetamide, and CS revealed clinically relevant reactions to CN in 3 cases and questionable positive reaction to CS in one case. 8 further patients showed mild reactions to CN and CS. We did not find any indication of cross reactions between CN and chloroacetamide.

Chlorobenzylidene malononitrile tear gas exposure: Rinsing with amphoteric, hypertonic, and chelating solution.

OBJECTIVE: Chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) is the tear gas used by the police. The aim was to evaluate an amphoteric, hypertonic, and chelating rinsing solution in CS exposure. METHODS: The first (CS) group of six police officers was exposed to CS only. The second (preexposure) group of eight sprayed their faces with an aqueous, hypertonic, amphoteric, and chelating solution before CS exposure. The third (postexposure) group of eight sprayed their faces with an aqueous, hypertonic, amphoteric, and chelating solution after CS exposure. The time between exiting the CS cloud and arriving at

[Acute exposure to CS tear gas and clinical studies].

A case of serious intoxication with CS tear gas (o-chlorobenzylidene-malononitrile) is reported in a previously healthy male subject of 43 years involving pulmonary edema complicated by pneumonia, signs of heart failure and evidence of hepatocellular damage. Comparison with animal and human exposures supports the etiologic and pathogenetic role of CS tear gas in the present case. The pulmonary edema may have been the consequence of unusual conditions of exposure and/or increased individual susceptibility. The question of the "safety" of CS tear gas is discussed.

Suicides by starter's pistols and air guns.

We report the case of a 25-year-old depressed woman who committed suicide with a starter's pistol loaded with CS tear-gas ammunition. The propellant gases of the contact shot entered her chest through the left sixth intercostal space. Exsanguination was caused by perforations of the pericardium and apex of the heart. Autopsy did not reveal any metallic or other foreign bodies that might have originated from the propellant, the cartridge, or any bulletlike material. Her injuries were thus caused by the propellant alone. 0.5 mg L-1 of the CS degradation product cyanide was detected in the cardia

Investigation of accidental secondary exposure to CS agent.

We report on an unusual exposure to o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS agent) following its use to detect unauthorized stowaways aboard a vehicle, and the subsequent handling of the cargo delivered to retail stores across Scotland. Twenty-one staff in 16 retail stores across Scotland experienced symptoms including itching and running eyes, rhinorhoea, a burning sensation on the face and hands, and a burning throat, following the furniture deliveries. A survey was conducted to assess the extent of exposure to the contaminated furniture and the scale of illness associated with exposure. Exper

Prevention of CS "tear gas" eye and skin effects and active decontamination with Diphoterine: preliminary studies in 5 French Gendarmes.

Ortho-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) "tear gas" is a lacrimating riot control agent causing eye irritation, excessive lacrimation, and blepharospasm. Diphoterine has been efficacious for decontamination of a wide variety of eye and skin chemical splashes and was tested in CS exposure. Five French Gendarmes either entered a standard training CS exposure chamber, developed eye or skin signs and symptoms, and were post-exposure decontaminated with Diphoterine or used Diphoterine as pre-CS exposure prophylaxis in the eyes and on the face before entering the chamber. Gendarmes who entered the

Acute mass burns caused by o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) tear gas.

The use of tear gas in controlling riots has been an accepted practice in many countries for the past four decades. In a recent event, a large quantity of tear-gas canisters were used during a situation of unrest in a Hong Kong Refugees' Detention Centre. We report 96 cases of acute burn injury as an unpredicted side effect of o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) tear gas. There were 47 females and 49 males with an age ranging between < 1 to 51 years. These burns were categorized as minor burns, with the total body surface area (TBSA) ranging from 1 to 8 per cent with mean percentage of 3. M

The acute mammalian toxicology of dibenz(b,f)-1,4-oxazepine.

Dibenz(b,f)-1,4-oxazepine (CR), a potent peripheral sensory irritant material, has been shown to have a very low acute lethal and sub-lethal toxicity by intravenous, intraperitoneal, oral, percutaneous and inhalation routes to several species of laboratory mammal. There was no organ-specific pathology. Comparison of the acute toxicity of CR with that of two other peripheral sensory irritants, 1-chloroacetophenone (CN) and 2-chlorobenzyl-lidene malononitrile (CS), shows CR to be significantly less toxic than either of them. Pyrotechnically generated CR smoke was more toxic than pure (thermally

Pharmacologic Inhibition of Transient Receptor Potential Ion Channel Ankyrin 1 Counteracts 2-Chlorobenzalmalononitrile Tear Gas Agent-Induced Cutaneous Injuries.

Deployment of the tear gas agent 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS) for riot control has significantly increased in recent years. The effects of CS have been believed to be transient and benign. However, CS induces severe pain, blepharospasm, lachrymation, airway obstruction, and skin blisters. Frequent injuries and hospitalizations have been reported after exposure. We have identified the sensory neuronal ion channel, transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), as a key CS target resulting in acute irritation and pain and also as a mediator of neurogenic inflammation. Here, we examined the

Comparative acute toxicity of o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) and oleoresin capsicum (OC) in awake rats.

Tear gases are largely used to control civil unrest. Their incapaciting effects involve eyes, skin and respiratory tract. This study was performed to compare acute respiratory effects of o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS), oleoresin capsicum (OC) and their respective solvents in awake rats, using an integrated system of nose-only exposure and multiple monitoring of breathing. Aerosols were generated by a Collison Nebulizer from the solutions held in tear gas sprays. The reduction of minute ventilation, observed during a 5 min exposure, was significantly more important with CS than with OC:

Unintended cutaneous reactions to CS spray.

CS spray (2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile 5% w/v in methyl isobutyl ketone) has been used by the police force in the UK as an incapacitant for nearly a decade. It causes a number of well-recognized cutaneous reactions, which are generally regarded as short-lived. These include skin burning, erythema and blistering. However, a range of unpredictable cutaneous reactions to CS spray may also occur. We have found contact allergy, leukoderma, initiation or exacerbation of seborrhoeic dermatitis, and aggravation of rosacea following CS spray exposure in 6 police officers and 1 doorman. These skin

Long-term psychiatric morbidity in the aftermath of CS spray trauma.

The physical effects of CS spray are well documented. However, less is known about the impact of its use by the police on the psychological health of those exposed. In this study we explored the psychiatric morbidity of a group of 30 individuals who experienced the same trauma, a significant part of which was exposure to CS spray. Just over a quarter suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. It is proposed that more attention needs to be paid to the psychological effects of the use of CS spray by the police. Consistent with other studies, a past psychiatric history and a more external locus of

The comparative acute mammalian toxicity of 1-chloroacetophenone (CN) and 2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS).

The comparative acute toxicity of two peripheral sensory irritant materials, 1-chloroacetophenone (CN) and 2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS), has been investigated in several species of small mammal using solutions in polyethylene glycol 300 for intravenous, intraperitoneal and oral administration, and as pure aerosols for inhalation exposure. Additionally, the comparative potency for inducing primary contact dermatitis was studied. CN and CS were found to be about equitoxic by intravenous and intraperitoneal injection, but CS was significantly less toxic by the oral and inhalation routes

[Lacrimators as acceptors for NADH].

Lachrymators of varied structure are reduced either by hydrogen addition or halogen substitution using NADH model compounds as donors. Similar compounds without lachrymatory activity were reduced either very slowly or not at all. CS (o-Chlorobenzalmalonitril) is reduced by NADH, the reaction being catalyzed by an enzyme present in erythrocytes. Thus the lachrymatory action follows a general scheme for the activity of sensory transduction. This scheme consists of a reception in the nerve cell membrane and a fast or simultaneous chemical transformation in an enzymic reaction.

Latent turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of toxic malononitrile in water and its practical applications.

A latent turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of malononitrile (NCCH2CN), a precursor of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the mammalian tissue metabolism, is developed based on reaction-based fluorophore generation for the first time. Malononitrile is utilized within a wide spectrum of academic and industrial applications, and it is a key reagent to make o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS gas; tear gas), which is used for riot control. Due to its extensive use as well as potential health risks and the environmental pollution, malononitrile monitoring method has been required. In this paper,

Tear gasses CN, CR, and CS are potent activators of the human TRPA1 receptor.

The TRPA1 channel is activated by a number of pungent chemicals, such as allylisothiocyanate, present in mustard oil and thiosulfinates present in garlic. Most of the known activating compounds contain reactive, electrophilic chemical groups, reacting with cysteine residues in the active site of the TRPA1 channel. This covalent modification results in activation of the channel and has been shown to be reversible for several ligands. Commonly used tear gasses CN, CR and CS are also pungent chemicals, and in this study we show that they are extremely potent and selective activators of the human
