The importance of genetic factors for the development of arthropathy: a longitudinal study of children and adolescents with haemophilia A.

Haemophilia A is a congenital bleeding disorder characterised by recurrent haemorrhages into the major joints. Haemophilic arthropathy is a well-established outcome of recurrent joint bleeding; however, it is clear that multiple factors determine the extent and severity of its occurrence. We sought to identify genetic factors related to abnormalities in range of motion (ROM) in the knees, ankles and elbows in a cohort of children and adolescents with haemophilia A not treated primarily with regular prophylaxis. Using data from the Haemophilia Growth and Development Study, we examined associati

The global burden of headache in children and adolescents - developing a questionnaire and methodology for a global study.

BACKGROUND: Burden of headache has been assessed in adults in countries worldwide, and is high, but data for children and adolescents are sparse. The objectives of this study were o develop a questionnaire and methodology for the global estimation of burden of headache in children and adolescents, to test these in use and to present preliminary data. METHODS: We designed structured questionnaires for mediated-group self-administration in schools by children aged 6-11 years and adolescents aged 12-17 years. In two pilot studies, we offered the questionnaires to pupils in Vienna and Istanbul. W

Exercise capacity after extremely preterm birth. Development from adolescence to adulthood.

RATIONALE: Extremely preterm (EP) birth is associated with a series of adverse health outcomes, some of which may be alleviated by improved physical fitness. However, EP-born subjects are reportedly less physically active than term-born peers. Exercise capacity is poorly described in this group, and longitudinal data are needed. OBJECTIVES: To compare exercise capacity of adults born EP and at term, and to address developmental patterns from adolescence to adulthood. METHODS: An area-based cohort of adults, born in 1982-1985 at gestational age 28 weeks or earlier, or with birth weight of 1,0

Factors associated with development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents: a review of prospective studies.

The purpose of this review was to examine the factors that predict the development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents. Medline, Web of Science and PubMed were searched to identify prospective cohort studies that evaluated the association between several variables (e.g. physical activity, sedentary behaviour, dietary intake and genetic, physiological, social cognitive, family and peer, school and community factors) and the development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents (5-18 years). Sixty-one studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. There is evidence t

White matter development in adolescence: diffusion tensor imaging and meta-analytic results.

BACKGROUND: In light of the evidence for brain white matter (WM) abnormalities in schizophrenia, study of normal WM maturation in adolescence may provide critical insights relevant to the neurodevelopment of the disorder. Voxel-wise diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have consistently demonstrated increases in fractional anisotropy (FA), a putative measure of WM integrity, from childhood into adolescence. However, the WM tracts that show FA increases have been variable across studies. Here, we aimed to assess which WM tracts show the most pronounced changes across adolescence. METHODS: DT

[The importance of local and general factors in development of inflammatory periodontal diseases in children and adolescents].

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of local and general adverse risk factors and their role in the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases in children and adolescents. The study of the dental status among 618 school children, 9 to 15 years of age has been performed. The obtained results revealed an ambiguous influence of general and local risk factors on the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases. Namely, among the general risk factors the main role is given to hormonal functioning state of juvenile age (26.5%) - (arhythmia formation of hormonal activity).

Genetic and environmental factors influencing BMI development from adolescence to young adulthood.

BMI increases progressively from adolescence to young adulthood. The aims of the present study were firstly, to investigate the extent to which genetic and environmental influences account for differences in BMI trajectories during this period, and secondly to examine whether boys and girls show divergences in these influences, as their BMI normally start differing across adolescence. The study sample consisted of 4,915 monozygotic and like- and unlike-sex dizygotic twins, born between 1975 and 1979. Data on BMI was gathered when twins were on average 16.1, 17.1, 18.6 and 24.4 years old. Genet

Common functional polymorphisms of DISC1 and cortical maturation in typically developing children and adolescents.

Disrupted-in-schizophrenia-1 (DISC1), contains two common non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)--Leu607Phe and Ser704Cys--that modulate (i) facets of DISC1 molecular functioning important for cortical development, (ii) fronto-temporal cortical anatomy in adults and (iii) risk for diverse psychiatric phenotypes that often emerge during childhood and adolescence, and are associated with altered fronto-temporal cortical development. It remains unknown, however, if Leu607Phe and Ser704Cys influence cortical maturation before adulthood, and whether each SNP shows unique or overlappi

Inhibition and attention in adolescents with nonmanic mood disorders and a high risk for developing mania.

This study examines psychomotor inhibition, sustained attention, and inhibitory attentional control in adolescents (ages 12-18 years) with a nonmanic mood disorder and with a first-degree relative with bipolar I disorder (MD, N = 20) and demographically matched healthy children of parents without any psychiatric disorder (HC, N = 13). MD participants showed abnormal performance in stop signal reaction time and latency (d = 1.28 and 1.64, respectively), sustained attention response bias (d = 0.75), and color naming speed (d = 0.88). The results indicate that MD participants exhibit psychomotor

[To a relationship of the clinical course of myopia to the specific features of the physical development of children and adolescents].

Two hundred and seventy-six school children (552 eyes) with mild myopia and 340 with emmetropia (a control group) were examined. In addition to the conventional ophthalmological studies, the authors monitored blood pressure, by measuring mean systolic and mean diastolic pressures and using rheoencephalography, color Doppler mapping of orbital vessels, anthropometry, and somatotyping. The studies established a relationship between the progressive pattern of acquired myopia and the poor physical development of children and adolescents (30% or more muscle bulk reductions as compared with that in

Attachment representations of institutionalized adolescents and their professional caregivers: predicting the development of therapeutic relationships.

This study prospectively examined the effects of adolescent (N=81) and professional caregiver (N=33) attachment representations, measured using the Adult Attachment Interview, on therapeutic relationships in a youth treatment institution. After the first 3 months of the clients' stay in the institution, no effects of adolescents' or mentors' (i.e., the professional caregiver assigned) security and type of attachment representations were found. In a subgroup of 28 clients staying for a longer period, more secure adolescents were perceived by their mentors as increasing their secure base use and

Development of cortical and subcortical brain structures in childhood and adolescence: a structural MRI study.

The purpose of the present study was to describe in greater anatomical detail the changes in brain structure that occur during maturation between childhood and adolescence. High-resolution MRI, tissue classification, and anatomical segmentation of cortical and subcortical regions were used in a sample of 35 normally developing children and adolescents between 7 and 16 years of age (mean age 11 years; 20 males, 15 females). Each cortical and subcortical measure was examined for age and sex effects on raw volumes and on the measures as proportions of total supratentorial cranial volume. Results

[The interaction of growth hormone secretion and gonadal function in adolescents with delayed physical development].

The studies conducted in adolescents with physical underdevelopment allowed a conclusion on reduced anabolic processes particularly growth process at the expense of both STH and sex steroids: T and E2. Studies of sex steroid and gonadotrophic hormone concentrations in blood serum revealed dysfunction of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonadal system in this group of patients. Evaluation of androgen receptor level in protein cytosol fraction from the pubic skin of undersized youths with delayed sexual development demonstrated its significant reduction against the control group that may be explained

[Zinc and parlodel: the treatment potentials for retardation of growth and sexual development in nephropathies in adolescents].

Ten adolescents aged 10-18 years with physical and/or sexual development retardation associated with nephropathy were examined. Eight patients were treated with immunodepressants before and/or at the moment of examination. The difference between the age indicated in the patient's passport and bone age ranged within 0 to 3 years. On spermogram examination 3 of 4 patients manifested pathospermia. The serum prolactin level and the level of gonadotropins appeared normal but the testosterone content and plasma zinc level were lowered. As a result of the treatment with parlodel and/or zinc acetate f
