[A factor analysis of cochleovestibular findings. (author's transl)].

Using the variables auditory threshold, speech audiometry, SISI, ABLB, stapedius reflex, Carhart-test, Békésy audiometry and calorization three factors could be extracted: 1. The quality of peripheral speech-coding in combination with central processing; 2. the degree of damage of the inner ear (threshold, distance between hearing-threshold and reflex-threshold, SISI and calorization); 3. a retrocochlear factor. SISI and ABLB are both tests concerning the inner ear, but must be regarded separately as it is to be supposed that these two findings are caused be two different pathologic processes.

Correlation of the findings of auditory steady-state evoked potential and of behavioral hearing assessment in infants with sensorineural hearing loss.

PURPOSE: To correlate the findings of an open-field audiometry with the thresholds of steady-state auditory-evoked potentials (SSAEPs) found in infants of up to 6 months of age with sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: This study included 19 infants with sensorineural hearing loss (8 males and 11 females), with minimum age of 2 months and maximum age of 6 months. The SSAEPs were assessed at 500 and 2000 Hz, and the audiometry was performed in open field through observation of behavioral responses to sound stimuli, at the same frequencies. RESULTS: We observed a significant correlation betwee

Early identification and management of hearing impairment.

Early detection and treatment of hearing loss can prevent a lifetime of difficulties. Severe sensorineural hearing loss is present in approximately one in 1,000 newborns. Many newborns have mild to moderate hearing loss, either conductive or sensorineural, that interferes with normal functioning. The family physician is in an excellent position to identify hearing impairment at an early stage. During well-child visits, simple checklists and screening tests can be completed to aid in detection of a hearing loss. The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing and the National Institutes of Health Consens

Comparing Self-Fitting Strategies for Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: A Crossover Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Fewer than 20% of US adults with hearing loss use hearing aids due to barriers like high cost. Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids offer a potential solution, incorporating self-fitting strategies via smartphone apps. Self-fitting strategies have been validated for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved OTC hearing aids compared with prescription-based approaches. However, no direct comparative analysis exists between in situ audiometry and self-adjustment strategies using self-fitting OTC (OTC-SF) hearing aids. OBJECTIVE: To compare self-adjustment and in situ audiometry sel

Audiological profile of fishermen using fiber motor boats in Puducherry.

BACKGROUND: Fishermen face multiple occupational health risks including drowning, traumatic injuries, asphyxia, and skin allergies. Additionally, their exposure to high intensities of engine noise during fishing puts them at risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Inadequate use of ear protective devices and lack of awareness further contribute to the prevalence of NIHL among fishermen. This study aims to measure the engine noise level of fiber motor boats and develop an audiological profile of fishermen in Puducherry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty fishermen between the ages of 20 to 45 ye

Auditory-steady-state response reliability in the audiological diagnosis after neonatal hearing screening.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Conventional audiometry is the gold standard for quantifying and describing hearing loss. Alternative methods become necessary to assess subjects who are too young to respond reliably. Auditory evoked potentials constitute the most widely used method for determining hearing thresholds objectively; however, this stimulus is not frequency specific. The advent of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) leads to more specific threshold determination. The current study describes and compares ASSR, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and conventional behavioural tone aud

AMTAS: automated method for testing auditory sensitivity: validation studies.

Three studies are reported assessing the validity of AMTAS, an automated method for obtaining an audiogram, including air- and bone-conduction thresholds (stimuli delivered by a forehead-placed transducer) with masking noise presented to the non-test ear. In Study 1, six subjects at each of three sites were tested using manual audiometry by two audiologists at each site. The mean differences between the audiograms for the paired audiologists provided a measure of the reliability of traditional audiometry. In Study 2, thirty subjects (5 normal hearing, 25 hearing impaired) were tested using AMT
