BACKGROUND: Alcohol and caffeine are the 2 frequently consumed substances in the general population, and the 2 substances are frequently co-consumed. Both substances may increase cardiac arrhythmia risk. However, it is unknown whether alcohol and caffeine co-consumption can synergistically enhance cardiac arrhythmogenesis.
OBJECTIVE: The study sought to investigate whether caffeine and binge drinking synergistically affect cardiac arrhythmogenesis.
METHODS: A binge drinking rat model (alcohol 2 g/kg, intraperitoneal, every other day for 3 times) was used. Rats (4 months old, both sexes) were

The drinking patterns of 124 pregnant teenagers are described and compared with those of 267 pregnant adults attending the same prenatal clinic in Pittsburgh. Adults had a significantly higher average daily volume of alcohol prior to pregnancy than adolescents, but that higher level was no longer significant during pregnancy. However, the rate of binge drinking during the first trimester was higher in the teenage sample than in the adult sample. Rates of binge drinking and heavy drinking were highest among the white teenage group. Use of marijuana and cocaine/crack decreased precipitously duri

The authors show that the dopamine D3 antagonist SB-277011-A consistently and persistently decrease binge-like EtOH consumption at 30 mg/kg and it decreases binge-like consumption on days 3, 7, 9, and 11-13 at 15 mg/kg. These findings suggest that the brain's D3 receptor may also be involved in not only ethanol reward but binge drinking as well.

The characteristic facial features of the more severe end of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) include smooth philtrum, thin vermillion of the upper lip, and short palpebral fissures. A systematic evaluation of a comprehensive list of minor structural defects in association with varying patterns of prenatal exposure to alcohol has not been performed. We examined the patterns and timing of prenatal alcohol exposure to minor structural malformations occurring in at least 5% of the sample. Patterns of drinking were evaluated by drinks per day, number of binge episodes, and maximum number of

BACKGROUND: Alcohol hangover is a growing research area, but differences across the life span have not been assessed. Here, we test the hypothesis that the severity of hangovers depends on age.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 51,645 men and women aged 18 to 94 years old, who participated in the population-based Danish Health Examination Study (DANHES) in Denmark between 2007 and 2008, formed the database for our study.
RESULTS: The incidence of severe hangover was lower among older than younger participants. Odds ratios for experiencing severe hangover following an episode of binge drink

BACKGROUND: Depression and risky alcohol use are common in vulnerable populations, such as leisure and hospitality workers. While Hispanic workers are overrepresented in the hospitality industry, empirical research on these health burdens among Hispanic workers is limited, particularly workers who prefer to speak Spanish. Given the devastating unemployment following the COVID-19 lockdown, data on health burdens among hospitality industry workers is especially important.
METHODS: To assess the impact of pandemic-related unemployment within vulnerable populations, we examined current major depr

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are popular among college students, who display risky alcohol use patterns. However, little is known about patterns of co-use of e-cigarettes and alcohol. Further, relationships between e-cigarette use and mental illness among college students are unclear.
METHODS: College student participants (N = 631) at a northeastern U.S. university were invited via email to participate in a survey about e-cigarettes and alcohol use. Mental health was self-reported diagnosis of psychiatric (depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety disord

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health measures (PHMs) potentially affected alcohol consumption. Our objectives were to evaluate if adherence to PHMs was associated with changes in alcohol consumption and binge drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with participants (50-96 years) in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (N = 23 615). Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were estimated from multinomial logistic regression models for associations between PHM adherence (self-quarantine, attending public gatherings, leaving ho

Alcohol is a widely consumed substance in the United States, however its effect on aging remains understudied. In this study of young adults, we examined whether cumulative alcohol consumption, i.e., alcohol years of beer, liquor, wine, and total alcohol, and recent binge drinking, were associated with four measures of age-related epigenetic changes via blood DNA methylation. A random subset of study participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study underwent DNA methylation profiling using the Illumina MethylationEPIC Beadchip. Participants with alcohol consumption an

Binge drinking is a drinking pattern that results in a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 g/dL or higher in a 2-h period. Binge drinking rates are often highest in adolescents. Persistent adolescent binge drinking has unique consequences and can produce social, cognitive, and executive function deficits. Most of what we know about the mechanisms underlying the effects of adolescent alcohol exposure comes from rodent studies. We developed an adolescent alcohol consumption paradigm in ferrets termed Intermittent One-Bottle (IOB). Ferrets received a bottle of 5% alcohol for 24 h (no water)

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether attitudes toward drug use, as well as decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills, act as predictors of alcohol use and binge drinking initiation among Brazilian students, considering sex differences.
METHODS: In a longitudinal sample of 1,103 seventh-grade students from 15 Brazilian public schools, we explored if attitudes toward drug use and decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills at baseline predicted alcohol outcomes 9 months later.
RESULTS: Lower levels of resistance skills (i.e., ORboys = 0.29; 95%CI 0.12-0.70) and

BACKGROUND: Tailgating is popular at many college football games. However, it is known to contribute to binge drinking and alcohol intoxication, which are common public health challenges.
OBJECTIVE: To use laboratory data to measure changes in plasma ethanol levels observed in a large state university emergency department after a series of reforms were enacted to reduce binge drinking.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review on all serum ethanol levels measured at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on weekends from 2006 through 2014. Data were analyzed by multivariable l

This research examined 1) the prevalence of substance use behaviors in college students, 2) gender and academic level as moderators of the associations between mental health problems and substance use, and 3) mental health service use among those with co-occurring frequent binge drinking and mental health problems. As part of the Healthy Minds Study, a probability sample of 2843 college students completed an Internet survey on mental health problems, substance use behaviors, and utilization of mental health care. Response propensity weights were used to adjust for differences between responden

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the most prevalent psychoactive substance consumed around the world. In Portugal, alcohol consumption is deeply embedded in social and cultural practices, contributing to high prevalence rates among university students, with binge drinking emerging as a predominant consumption pattern. Despite the associations between this drinking behaviour and numerous social, physical, and psychological problems, research on alcohol consumption in Portuguese university populations remains limited. Thus, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive description of alcohol use patterns am

INTRODUCTION: State-level alcohol policies reduce excessive drinking and related harms in the general population, but their effectiveness may vary by policy type and age group. This study examined the associations that mutually exclusive policy subgroups of the Alcohol Policy Scale had with alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences among U.S. college students.
METHODS: Data were from repeated cross-sectional surveys of 902,486 college students aged 18-24 years from 591 four-year institutions in 47 states during 2008-2019. Outcomes were past 2-week binge drinking, 30-day frequent a
