Evaluation of the Effect of Surgical Drapes on Intraoperative Hypothermia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Many patients experience unintended hypothermia in intraoperative processes. This randomized clinical trial aims to investigate the impact of surgical drapes on hypothermia during the intraoperative period. A randomized clinical trial was conducted from April 2019 to November 2020 in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation/Operating Rooms at an education and research hospital. Out of 205 patients assessed for eligibility, 74 underwent elective abdominal surgery and were randomized into two groups: nonwoven surgical drapes and woven surgical drapes. The study had two stages: preoperati

Seasonal adjustments in body mass and basal thermogenesis in Chinese hwameis (Garrulax canorus): the roles of temperature and photoperiod.

For small birds to survive during seasonal acclimatization in temperate zones, regulation of body mass and thermogenesis is crucial. To determine the role of temperature and photoperiod in seasonal changes in body mass and thermogenesis in Chinese hwameis (Garrulax canorus), we compared body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), energy intake and cellular metabolic capacity of the tissue (muscle) and/or organs (liver, kidney, heart and small intestine) in seasonally acclimatized and laboratory-acclimated hwameis. A significant seasonal influence on body mass and BMR (which peaked in winter) was fo

Heat loss augmented by extracorporeal circulation is associated with overcooling in cardiac arrest survivors who underwent targeted temperature management.

We investigated the association of extracorporeal circuit-based devices with temperature management and neurological outcome in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors who underwent targeted temperature management. Patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and/or continuous renal replacement therapy were classified as the extracorporeal group. We calculated the cooling rate during the induction period and time-weighted core temperatures (TWCT) during the maintenance period. We defined the sum of TWCT above or below 33 °C as positive and negative TWCT, respectively, and the sum of TWCT

Comparison of natural and pharmacological hypothermia in animals: Determination of activation energy of metabolism.

The constancy of the activation energy of metabolism (E) for all living organisms is one of the most impressive, though controversial, statements of the modern metabolic theory of evolution. According to WBE-theory suggested by West, Brown, and Enquist, E should be in the range from -0.6 to -0.7 eV. However, there are many examples of significant deviations of E from the predictions of the theory. Now we have conducted a study of this value using rats in different types of pharmacological hypothermia: 1. Short-term (for several hours) hypothermia induced by anesthetic xylazine; 2. Daily torpor

Urinary responses to cold temperature during water immersion.

If cold temperature combines with ambient water pressure to stimulate the Henry-Gauer reflex in humans, then free water clearance (CH2O) should be greater during immersion in cold water (29.8 degrees C) than during exposure to cold air (14.8 degrees C) or immersion in thermoneutral water (35 degrees C). Urinary responses to these environments were compared with control measurements made during 6 h of sitting in thermoneutral air (27.6 degrees C). CH2O was not significantly greater in cold water than in the other environments. Rather, the diuretic response was characterized by an increased osmo

Blood flow, calcium deposition and heat loss in reindeer antlers.

Antler blood flow was studied in a 2 year old male reindeer during the last half of the antler growth period using an electromagnetic flow probe chronically implanted around the superficial temporal artery. Arteriovenous (a-v) differences of calcium were measured on antler blood. The blood flow increased from 60--90 ml/min when the antler was half-grown to 100--120 ml/min when fully developed. Subsequently a reduction was observed towards shedding. Positive a-v plasma calcium differences (on average 0.2 mM) were recorded during the period of active growth. Two bulls maintained positive a-v cal

Effect of spinal cord injury on the skin temperature of different regions of interest during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment.

The gradient between core and skin temperature is a relevant factor in heat exchange between the human body and the environment, but people with spinal cord injury (SCI), due to their autonomic dysfunction, have impaired mechanisms that condition skin temperature response. This study aimed to determine how SCI affects skin temperature response in different ROIs during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment. 32 participants were included in the study [SCI (N = 16); Non-SCI (N = 16)]. A graded exercise test was conducted on an arm crank ergometer, with a staged duration of

Long-range correlations in rectal temperature fluctuations of healthy infants during maturation.

BACKGROUND: Control of breathing, heart rate, and body temperature are interdependent in infants, where instabilities in thermoregulation can contribute to apneas or even life-threatening events. Identifying abnormalities in thermoregulation is particularly important in the first 6 months of life, where autonomic regulation undergoes critical development. Fluctuations in body temperature have been shown to be sensitive to maturational stage as well as system failure in critically ill patients. We thus aimed to investigate the existence of fractal-like long-range correlations, indicative of tem

Assessment of the Omius™ cooling headband effectiveness during a 70-min submaximal running effort followed by a 5-km time-trial in hot/humid conditions.

Exercise performed under hot/humid conditions can hinder endurance performance. The Omius™ headband (OH) is purported to reduce the perception of heat and improve performance. We examined the impact of OH on selected thermal and cardiovascular functions, subjective perceptions and running performance. Using a randomized crossover protocol, 10 trained male athletes (28 ± 4 years) completed two trials (OH and sham headband (SH), 35.0 ± 0.3 °C, 56 ± 3% relative humidity) comprising 70 min of running (60% V˙O2max) followed by a 5-km running time-trial (TT). Exercise and Heat Stress in Well-Healed Burn Survivors: Effects of Cooling Modalities on Thermal and Perceptual Responses.

PURPOSE: Burn injuries that require grafting impair thermoregulation, which may dissuade individuals with such injuries from being physically active. We tested the hypothesis that cooling modalities attenuate core temperature elevations and perceptions of heat stress during physical activity in the heat among adults with well-healed burn injuries. METHODS: Adults with no burn injuries (non-burned), 20%-40% body surface area burn injuries (moderate burn), and >40% body surface area burn injuries (large burn) performed 1 h of moderate-intensity exercise (2.5 ± 0.2 mph and 2% grade) on four diff

Pilot Study Examining the Effects of Atropine on Performance during Uncompensable Heat Stress.

UNLABELLED: In many operational scenarios, hypohydration can be corrected with oral rehydration following the work interval. Although rare, there are potential situations that require extended intervals of uncompensable heat stress exposure while working in personal protective equipment (PPE). Under these conditions, retention of body water may be valuable to preserve work capacity and reduce cardiovascular strain. We conducted a pilot study comparing intramuscular atropine sulfate versus saline placebo to establish the safety profile of the protocol and to provide pilot data for future invest

A reduced core to skin temperature gradient, not a critical core temperature, affects aerobic capacity in the heat.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the core to skin temperature gradient during incremental running to volitional fatigue across varying environmental conditions. A secondary aim was to determine if a "critical" core temperature would dictate volitional fatigue during running in the heat. 60 participants (n=49 male, n=11 female; 24±5 yrs, 177±11 cm, 75±13 kg) completed the study. Participants were uniformly stratified into a specific exercise temperature group (18 °C, 26 °C, 34 °C, or 42 °C) based on a 3-mile run performance. Participants were equipped with core and chest

Temperature variation in newborn babies: importance of physical contact with the mother.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is a major cause of deterioration and death in the neonatal period. Temperature deviations are key signs of illness. OBJECTIVE: To determine normal patterns of temperature variation in newborn babies and the influence of external factors. METHODS: Abdominal and foot skin temperature were continuously recorded in 27 healthy full term babies during the first two days of life and related to the care situation-that is, whether the baby was with the mother or in its cot. The recordings were made using no wires to avoid interference with the care of the neonate. Ambient tem

Radial and temporal variations in surface heat transfer during cryogen spray cooling.

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is a heat extraction process that protects the epidermis from thermal damage during dermatologic laser surgery. The objective of the present work is to investigate radial and temporal variations in the heat transferred through the surface of a skin phantom during CSC. A fast-response thermal sensor is used to measure surface temperatures every 1 mm across a 16 mm diameter of the sprayed surface of the phantom. An analytical expression based on Fourier's law and Duhamel's theorem is used to compute surface heat fluxes from temperature measurements. Results show that

Evaluating low-energy cooling strategies on thermal and cardiac strain in older adults exposed to very hot and dry heat with accompanying activities of daily living.

We tested the hypothesis that skin wetting would attenuate, whereas electric fans would increase, thermal and cardiac strain in older adults exposed to very hot and dry heat. Twenty-three older adults (66-84 yr) were exposed (randomized) to 3 h of ambient heating (47°C and 15% relative humidity) with water spray, fan use, water spray + fan use, or no cooling intervention. We assessed thermal, cardiovascular, and cardiac responses. Compared with control, water spray reduced the increase in core temperature by -0.24°C [95% CI: -0.42, -0.06] (P = 0.007), ending skin temperature by -2.1°C [-2.6, -

Effect of the timing of ice slurry ingestion for precooling on endurance exercise capacity in a warm environment.

It has been demonstrated that precooling with ice slurry ingestion enhances endurance exercise capacity in the heat. However, no studies have yet evaluated the optimal timing of ice slurry ingestion for precooling. This study aimed to investigate the effects of varying the timing of ice slurry ingestion for precooling on endurance exercise capacity in a warm environment. Ten active male participants completed 3 experimental cycling trials to exhaustion at 55% peak power output (PPO) after 15min of warm-up at 30% PPO at 30°C and 80% relative humidity. Three experimental conditions were set: no
