Pulmonary atelectasis manifested after induction of anesthesia: a contribution of sinobronchial syndrome?

A 31-year-old man underwent general anesthesia for sinus surgery. Anesthesia was induced with midazolam and butorphanol, and an endotracheal tube was orally placed with a bronchoscope, due to difficulty with temporomandibular joint opening. Ventilation difficulty and increased peak inspiratory pressure were noticed shortly after tracheal intubation, and bronchoscopy was performed for diagnosis. The bronchi were filled with a clear mucous secretion. Removal of the secretion improved respiration and decreased the peak inspiratory pressure. A chest roentgenogram taken prior to extubation showed r

Opioid-Induced Myoclonus During Premedication in Two Dogs With Hydrocephalus Proactively Managed With Antiepileptic Medications.

This report describes opioid-induced neurotoxicity (OIN) in two dogs with hydrocephalus undergoing the investigation of recurrent seizures; in both dogs, myoclonus occurred following premedication with butorphanol and remifentanil and resolved following the administration of midazolam. Thorough clinical evaluation excluded underlying systemic disease and increased intracranial pressure as possible causes, and opioid-induced modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibitory and dopaminergic interneurons was assumed. Benzodiazepines, like midazolam, enhanced GABA and appeared to be effecti

Comparing the Efficacy of Two Immobilization Drug Combinations for the Chemical Restraint of Bobcats (Lynx rufus).

Chemical immobilization agents that provide rapid induction time, short duration of action, wide margin of safety, and postreversal recovery are important attributes to the handling process of immobilized animals. We evaluated differences in induction, recovery, and physiologic parameters in 23 (13 female, nine adults and four yearlings; 10 male, nine adults and one yearling) free-ranging bobcats (Lynx rufus) chemically immobilized with an intramuscular combination of ketamine (10 mg/kg) and xylazine (KX; 1.5 mg/kg; n=11) or a combination of butorphanol (0.8 mg/kg), azaperone (0.27 mg/kg), and

Evaluation of storage conditions and periods for a three-drug anesthetic mixture in mice.

The three-drug anesthetic mixture (medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol), developed as an injectable anesthetic for laboratory animals, has been verified from various perspectives and applied to mice and other laboratory animals. However, the effects of its storage conditions and periods on its efficacy have not yet been studied. This study investigated the mixture's efficacy after storage under various conditions (room temperature, 4°C and -20°C) for 1 and 2 years. Mice in all groups were induced into a stable anesthetic state for at least 15 min after administration. The mice recovered fr

Determination of drugs in biological samples by thin-layer chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

In this work thin-layer chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (TLC-MS-MS) allowed detection and confirmation of caffeine and nicotine in human urine and of butorphanol, betamethasone, and clenbuterol in equine urine. In most cases of trace analysis of labile compounds the drugs could not be identified unless they were developed on a TLC plate, scraped from the plate and the TLC scrape eluted with a suitable organic solvent prior to MS-MS. Usually a sample prepared in this way still had several components in it, but was sufficiently cleaned up to allow collision-induced dissociation (CID) exp

The effect of opioid and acepromazine premedication on the anesthetic induction dose of propofol in cats.

The median effective dosage (ED50) for induction of anesthesia with propofol was determined by using the up-and-down method in 31 unpremedicated cats, in 30 cats premedicated with butorphanol, 0.4 mg/kg body weight (BW), and acepromazine, 0.1 mg/kg BW, intramuscularly, and in 30 cats premedicated with morphine, 0.2 mg/kg BW, and acepromazine, 0.1 mg/kg BW, intramuscularly. The dose required for a satisfactory anesthetic induction in 50% of unpremedicated cats (ED50) was 7.22 mg/kg BW and of premedicated cats was 5.00 mg/kg BW. The reduction in dose was statistically significant in both premedi

A comparison of injectable anaesthetic regimens in mules.

Three combinations of injectable anaesthetic agents were compared in nine adult mules. The combinations were xylazine/ketamine (X/K), xylazine/butorphanol/ketamine (X/B/K), and xylazine/tiletamine-zolazepam (X/T). Measured variables were heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic blood pressure, arterial blood pH, PCO2 and PO2, recumbency time and number of attempts to stand. Quality of induction and recovery, muscle relaxation and response to stimulus were evaluated subjectively. Recumbency time was significantly (P < 0.05) longer with X/B/K and X/T than with X/K. Mules required significantly mor

Open nasal cavity and frontal sinus treatment of chronic canine aspergillosis.

Five dogs with nasal aspergillosis were treated by surgical exposure and delayed closure of the nasal cavity and involved frontal sinus. Diseased tissue was excised, and 10% povidone-iodine solution was applied three times daily with cotton-tipped applicators. Skin wounds were closed at weeks 6 through 8. In one dog, the frontal sinus was partially obliterated with a temporalis muscle flap before skin closure. At months 6 through 34, all dogs were clinically free of aspergillosis. Open treatment has potential clinical application as a primary approach to nasal aspergillosis or for cases that a

Hemilingual tetany ("hemilingual spasm") in a dog.

Hemilingual atrophy, often secondary to lesions (e.g. neoplasia) affecting the hypoglossal nerve ipsilaterally, is the only unilateral tongue muscle-related neurological disorder reported in dogs. Hemilingual spasm is a descriptive term used in the human medical literature that refers to a disorder of involuntary, unilateral contractions in tongue musculature. We report a 5-year-old Border collie with hemilingual tetany ("hemilingual spasm"). Clinical examination revealed a resting unilateral contraction of the tongue on the right side with a resultant curvature of the tongue of variable degre

Different interventions in preventing sufentanil-induced cough: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sufentanil-induced cough (SIC) is prevalent in anesthesia practice. A variety of interventions have been employed to prevent SIC. However, the optimal intervention remains elusive. METHODS: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted on the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. The search was limited to publications prior to July 5, 2025. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted using the R software. A Bayesian framework was employed for this NMA. Comparisons of competing models based

Measurement of Intraocular Pressure Using Rebound Tonometry in Anesthetized Free-ranging South American Sea Lions (Otaria byronia).

Intraocular pressures (IOPs) were measured using a rebound tonometer in 56 free-ranging adult South American sea lions (Otaria byronia) from Punta San Juan, Peru. All animals were anesthetized using medetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol and determined to be in good health. No ocular abnormalities were observed affecting the cornea or ocular adnexa. Field conditions precluded evaluation of the lens and posterior segment of the eye. Mean (SD) IOP values for males (n=37) were 31±11 mmHg (right eye) and 31±9 mmHg (left eye). The same values for females (n=19) were 24±9 mmHg in the left eye and

Development of a canine nociceptive thermal escape model.

Acute nociceptive models which have been validated for large animal species are limited, yet nociceptive assessment in non-rodent species is important in analgesic drug development where larger animals may be necessary because of the technical requirements of the study. Here we report development and validation of a canine hind paw thermal escape model and the effect of analgesics on withdrawal latencies. Individual focused projection bulbs were used as left and right voltage-adjusted thermal stimuli placed below a glass plate in a specifically designed canine holding apparatus. After acclimat

Postoperative management of the large colon volvulus patient.

Horses with large colon volvulus (LCV) often require intensive postoperative medical management. Although early referral and surgical intervention are critical for minimal postoperative complications and a successful outcome, this is often not possible for many reasons. Endotoxemia, extensive mucosal damage with subsequent severe hypoproteinemia, and focal ischemic necrosis are the major causes of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Although fluid therapy, flunixin meglumine, and antimicrobials are still the mainstay of perioperative management, synthetic colloids are being used to maintain
