Systemic mycosis caused by Trichophyton spp. in an olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea): an immunohistochemical study.

CASE HISTORY: A sub-adult female olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) was found floating off the coast of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: The turtle was lethargic and weak, and died one day after it was found. Necropsy was performed and selected samples of lung and liver were routinely processed for histopathological and immunohistological studies. Grossly, round, ulcerative lesions were observed on the rear flippers. The liver, spleen, coelomic wall, gastric serosa, lungs and urinary bladder were covered by various amounts of fibrin and sma

Mutation G47R in the BSND gene causes Bartter syndrome with deafness in two Spanish families.

Bartter syndrome (BS) is a heterogeneous group of autosomal recessive hypokalaemic salt-losing tubulopathies. Five types of BS caused by different genetic defects have been identified, and one of them is associated with sensorineural deafness (BSND). Mutations in the recently described BSND gene, mapped in chromosome 1p31, have been reported to be associated with BSND. This gene encodes barttin, an essential beta-subunit subunit for ClC-Ka and ClC-Kb channels. Both subunits are co-expressed in basolateral membranes of renal tubules, in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, and in the stria

Surveillance of imported diseases as a window to travel health risks.

When using all its advantages of clinical vigilance, direct communication, and fast feedback, a clinical surveillance network can be remarkably effective in detecting sentinel events and in translating the new information into modifications of clinical practice. Travelers have great advantage when serving as surveillance tools for imported diseases. They travel widely and potentially expose themselves to all types of infectious diseases, they are very mobile, and they return during the incubation period of most diseases to a medical system that is capable of achieving fast and definitive diagno

Birdsong and singing behavior.

Birdsong provides neuroscientists with a uniquely powerful model for studying imitative vocal learning in a system where the brain structures responsible for song learning and production are well known. The 4,500+ species of songbirds provide a remarkable diversity of songs with a variety of tonal, structural, and learning characteristics, but most studies of the neural bases of learning have concentrated on two domesticated species, the canary and the zebra finch. Important differences in the songs of these two species provide useful properties for comparative studies, which could be expanded

[The real philanthropic expedition of the smallpox vaccine: monarchy and modernity in 1803].

Smallpox resulted in the death of 30 % of those who acquired it, so the preventive method discovered by Edward Jenner (London, 1798) spread very quickly. At the request in 1803 of Carlos IV, king of Spain, his government evaluated offers to carry smallpox vaccine to the colonies. The selected proposal, by doctor Francisco Xavier de Balmis, sought to take the lymph to America and Asia in a chain of arm to arm vaccination of foundlings. The Expedition set sail from Corunna on November 30, 1803, stopped in the Canary Isles, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela and after Caracas (1804) split in two groups.

Molecular genetics of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Mexico.

Several studies carried out between 1965 and 1985 showed that G-6-PD deficiency in Mexico is heterogeneous at the biochemical level and that the G-6-PD A- phenotype is relatively common. We have now investigated the molecular basis of G-6-PD deficiency in Mexico. Up-to-date 60 chromosomes with G6PD mutations have been studied, 16 in previous studies and 44 in the present work. Molecular analysis of DNA from G-6-PD deficient Mexican mestizos and their relatives show that G-6-PD A- genotypes are relatively common but also that in Mexico G-6-PD deficiency is heterogeneous at the DNA level. Thus,

Genetic heterogeneity in Hispanic families with autosomal dominant juvenile glaucoma.

A gene for autosomal dominant, juvenile-onset, primary open angle glaucoma (GLCIA) has been previously mapped to 1q21-31 in several Caucasian pedigrees. We studied two Hispanic families with this disease to determine if their disease genes also map to this region. Individuals were considered as being affected if they had 1OP > 30 mmHg (without treatment) and glaucomatous optic nerve damage or visual field defects. Persons older than 40 years with intraocular pressures < or = 21 mmHg and no evidence of optic nerve damage or visual field loss were scored as unaffected. Individuals not falling in

Evaluating the plausibility of oceanic rafting by giant palaeognathous birds to Lanzarote during the early Pliocene.

The discovery of giant palaeognathous bird eggs and eggshells in Lower Pliocene deposits of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) raises a fundamental biogeographical question: how could large flightless birds have colonized an oceanic island that has never been connected to the adjacent African mainland? Although the fossil material provides unequivocal evidence for the former presence of these birds, no associated skeletal remains are currently known and the mechanism by which they reached the island remains unresolved. During the early Pliocene, northwestern Africa experienced warmer and wetter climat

Multilayered Human Activities Shape the Microbial Communities of Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystems on an Arid Oceanic Island.

Island coastal aquifers, though spatially limited, sustain key ecosystem functions linked to locally critical provisioning, maintenance and cultural ecosystem services. These functions are largely dependent on the presence of highly adapted biological communities, whose microbial components remain poorly understood. Here, we describe bacterial communities across groundwater-dependent ecosystems on Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), spanning habitats with contrasting environmental conditions and degrees of human influence, using 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We then infer the processes sh

Low Zoonotic Pathogen Burden in Free-Roaming Cats Revealed by 18S rRNA Metabarcoding: A Baseline Study from an Insular Natura 2000 Site in Spain.

Free-roaming cats may contribute to zoonotic risk via parasites and other eukaryotic taxa, yet surveillance in protected island settings is limited and conventional coprology can miss low-intensity or degraded signals. We conducted a cross-sectional 18S rRNA metabarcoding survey to establish a baseline profile of potentially pathogenic eukaryotes in community cats from La Graciosa (Natura 2000, Canary Islands, Spain) prior to large-scale antiparasitic interventions. We analysed 152 faecal samples, including fresh samples collected during a high-throughput TNR campaign (n = 37) and dry environm

Improving Access to Nuclear Medicine in Island Regions: A Cost-Minimization Analysis of Radiopharmaceutical Supply Strategies.

OBJECTIVES: Access to positron emission tomography (PET) services is limited in many island regions because of dependence on externally produced radiopharmaceuticals and associated logistical constraints. This study provides a cost-minimization analysis of 3 alternative supply strategies, with the aim of improving access to these essential diagnostic examinations for underserved populations in remote island settings. METHODS: We conducted a cost-minimization analysis over a 20-year horizon, comparing 3 scenarios in 4 island regions (Corsica, Crete, Sardinia, and Cyprus): (A) full reliance on

Environmental risk factors of human Q fever in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, primarily transmitted to humans via airborne from livestock such as cattle, sheep and goats, though the pathogen is also found in other domestic and wild species. There is limited information on how environmental factors, including climate or livestock-related influence transmission risk in endemic areas. This study aims to assess the impact of these factors in Spain, the European country with the highest annual Q fever notifications. METHODS: An ecological epidemiological study was conducted to evaluate Q fever risk in

Oral health and multimorbidity: is diet the chicken or the egg?

Oral health is a critical component of overall health and well-being, not just the absence of disease. The objective of this review paper is to describe relationships among diet, nutrition and oral and systemic diseases that contribute to multimorbidity. Diet- and nutrient-related risk factors for oral diseases include high intakes of free sugars, low intakes of fruits and vegetables and nutrient-poor diets which are similar to diet- and nutrient-related risk factors for systemic diseases. Oral diseases are chronic diseases. Once the disease process is initiated, it persists throughout the lif

Predictive factors of destination at discharge after spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: One of the main goals of the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) is the reintegration of the individual to their family, social, and work setting. The objective of this study was to identify the factors that determine the discharge destination after a traumatic spinal cord injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of 305 patients with SCI who completed the rehabilitation treatment at the spinal injury unit of Hospital Insular de Gran Canaria between 2001 and 2018. RESULTS: During the study period, we observed an increase i

Small islands as potential model ecosystems for parasitology: climatic influence on parasites of feral cats.

The influence of climate on parasite distribution has been demonstrated in different regions worldwide. Despite its small size, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) constitutes a 'biodiversity laboratory' due to the huge climatic differences between municipalities. Feral cats may represent a threat to biodiversity due to their predatory behaviour. In addition, they may be a source of pathogens zoonotic to humans. To study the climatic/seasonal influence and prevalence of feral cat parasites throughout the island, a total of 290 stool samples from 29 feral cat colonies were analysed following s

Neuroangiostrongyliasis: Global Spread of an Emerging Tropical Disease.

Neuroangiostrongyliasis (NAS) is an emerging parasitic disease caused by the neurotropic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Since it was first discovered, in rats in southern China in the 1930s, this tropical to subtropical parasite has spread to much of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands (including Hawaii), Australia, Japan, South America, the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, Africa, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands. The parasite completes its natural life cycle in snails and slugs (intermediate hosts), and rats (definitive hosts). Humans become accidental hosts afte
