Steroids (corticosteroids) are anti-inflammatory drugs. Corticosteroids are used in many pulmonary conditions. Corticosteroids have a proven beneficial role in asthma, croup (Laryngotracheobronchitis), decreasing the risk and severity of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, interstitial lung disease, hemangioma of trachea, Pulmonary eosinophillic disorders. Role of corticosteroids is controversial in many conditions e.g. idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis, bronchiolitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, hyperplasia of thymus, bronchiolitis, acute respirato

BACKGROUND: Human Bocavirus (HBoV), a new species of the genus parvovirus newly detected in 2005, seems to be a worldwide distributed pathogen among children with respiratory tract infection (prevalence 2%-18%). Recently published retrospective studies and one prospective birth cohort study suggest that HBoV-primary infection occurs in infants.
METHODS: Prospective single center study over one winter season (November 2005-May 2006) with hospitalized children without age restriction using PCR-based diagnostic methods.
RESULTS: HBoV DNA was detected in 11 (2.8%) of 389 nasopharyngeal aspirates

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the safety and efficacy of balloon dilation as treatment for recurrent stenosis after pediatric laryngotracheoplasty.
METHODS: We studied a retrospective case series at an academic tertiary care children's hospital. We included all patients under the age of 18 years with subglottic or tracheal stenosis treated at our institution with balloon dilation between June 2007 and April 2009. The records were analyzed for patient demographics, presenting symptoms, surgical technique, and airway description. The outcome measures were airway diameter, postoperative symptoms, trac

INTRODUCTION: Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are significant causes of respiratory infections, particularly in children, yet their epidemiology remains poorly understood in low- and middle-income countries. HPIVs contribute to 20%-40% of pediatric lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and are a leading cause of croup and hospitalizations. This study was aimed at determining the incidence, distribution, and clinical and laboratory characteristics of HPIV in hospitalized acute febrile illness (AFI) patients.
METHODS: A total of 12,409 AFI cases from 2016 to 2018 were tested for HPIVs

The aim of this study was to verify the effect of the inclusion of coat color on the genetic parameter estimation for linear measurements in Campolina horses. Two models (1 and 2) were applied. For model 1, coat color effect was not included as variable of the contemporary group formation; in model 2, it was included. Model 2 presented the best fitting with a Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) of -979,459.020 compared with -1,818,458.572 DIC from model 1. The average of heritability estimates ranged from low to high magnitude (0.15 to 0.53) for model 1 and from moderate to high magnitude for

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of paediatric respiratory conditions is difficult and suboptimal. Existing diagnostic algorithms are associated with significant error rates, resulting in misdiagnoses, inappropriate use of antibiotics and unacceptable morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in acoustic engineering and artificial intelligence have shown promise in the identification of respiratory conditions based on sound analysis, reducing dependence on diagnostic support services and clinical expertise. We present the results of a diagnostic accuracy study for paediatric respiratory d

BACKGROUND: Children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) are living longer and presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) in larger numbers. A greater understanding of their diagnoses and appropriate management strategies can improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe the ED diagnoses, management, and dispositions of pediatric CCHD patients who present with fever.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed pediatric ED patients age 18 years or younger with a previous diagnosis of CCHD who presented with a fever from January 2000 to December 2005.

Adenoviruses most commonly cause respiratory illness; however, depending on the infecting serotype, they may also cause various other diseases. Diagnosis may be difficult to achieve. The clinical findings for 116 children hospitalised with adenoviral infection were studied retrospectively. In 71 children, the diagnosis was based on detection of adenovirus antigen in the nasopharyngeal specimens and in 71 children on viral culture. The clinical picture of adenoviral infection was characterised by high-grade (mean 39°1C) and prolonged fever (mean duration 4,3 days). Upper respiratory and lower re

Respiratory difficulty is a common presenting complaint in the outpatient primary care setting. Because patients may first seek care by calling their physician's office, telephone triage plays a role in the early management of dyspnea. Once the patient is in the office, the initial goal of assessment is to determine the severity of the dyspnea with respect to the need for oxygenation and intubation. Unstable patients typically present with abnormal vital signs, altered mental status, hypoxia, or unstable arrhythmia, and require supplemental oxygen, intravenous access and, possibly, intubation.

There are numerous causes of acquired acute upper airway obstructions in children but most are secondary to infections, foreign bodies, and trauma. Recognizing impending airway obstructions is important because cardiopulmonary arrest rarely is a sudden event but rather follows a progressive deterioration in respiratory function. From an anatomic perspective, acute obstructions may present in the pharyngeal or laryngeal regions. In the pharynx, fascial layers create several potential peritonsillar, parapharyngeal, and retropharyngeal spaces that may accommodate abscess formation. Within the lar

Laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB) continues to occur in epidemics necessitating many hospital admissions. A short barking cough, stridor with a crowing sound on inspiration, and retractions of the intercostal respiratory muscles are hallmarks of the disease. LTB is most frequently a viral disease causing acute inflammation of the subglottic area, the trachea, and the segmental bronchus. Increasing subglottic edema and generalized fatigue of patients with this disease can cause progression of airway obstruction. Respiratory and cardiac arrest follow unless an immediate airway is established. The m

Equitation in the French tradition is a school of riding that emphasizes harmonious relations between humans and horses. The best-known community is the Cadre Noir of Saumur, whose specialty is the air above the ground (AAG). No study has yet looked at the horse-rider interaction in this specific context. The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify indicators of AAGs based on the empirical perception of the écuyers expressed by a method of self-confrontation interviews. Fourteen training sessions were the subject of phenomenological and biomechanical approaches. Contact, balance, an

PROBLEM: Breastfed infants experience less severe infections while actively breastfeeding. However, little is known about whether a history of prior breastfeeding affects severity of illness. Therefore, the purpose of this integrative review was to examine the relationship between previous exposure to mother's own milk (MOM) feeding and severity of respiratory infectious illness in infants and children.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies meeting the following criteria were included: human subjects, term birth, ages 0-35 months at time of study, diagnosis of pneumonia, bronchiolitis or croup, MOM f
