Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has a high lifetime prevalence and is one of the more serious challenges in mental health care. Fear-conditioned learning involving the amygdala has been thought to be one of the main causative factors; however, recent studies have reported abnormalities in the thalamus of PTSD patients, which may explain the mechanism of interventions such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Therefore, I conducted a miniature literature review on the potential contribution of the thalamus to the pathogenesis of PTSD and the validation of therapeutic a

Pathological gambling (PG), a disorder currently categorized as an impulse-control disorder but being considered as a nonsubstance addiction in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) discussions, represents a significant public health concern. Over the past decade, considerable advances have been made with respect to understanding the biological underpinnings of PG. Research has also demonstrated the efficacies of multiple treatments, particularly behavioral therapies, for treating PG. Despite these advances, relatively little is known regarding how biological measures

Neurofunctional mechanisms underlying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are still not clearly understood. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study focused on changes in brain activation as a result of one-session CBT in patients suffering from spider phobia. Twenty-six female spider phobics and 25 non-phobic subjects were presented with spider pictures, generally disgust-inducing, generally fear-inducing and affectively neutral scenes in an initial fMRI session. Afterwards, the patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group (TG) or a waiting list group (WG). The scans

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a worldwide public health burden leading to severe impairment. PTSD has a particularly high occurrence among children exposed to potentially traumatic events. Our study aimed to establish the current state of the literature regarding nonpharmacological treatments studied to date to reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children and adolescents. We conducted the search on three databases: PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Embase, using the following MeSH Terms; stress disorders, post-traumatic, and psychological treatment. We refined the search by a

Background: Mental healthcare for children and adolescents with a history of childhood abuse constitutes a major public health issue. Indeed, abuse exposes children to severe and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) but also to neurodevelopmental and psychological repercussions impacting the developmental trajectory. Trauma-focused care is essential to avoid the chronicization of symptoms and disorders. Objective: The aim of this prospective case series study was to investigate the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on complex post-traumatic symptoms and

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of benzodiazepines has led to increasing recognition of their unwanted effects. The efficacy of alprazolam and placebo in panic disorder with agoraphobia, and the side-effect and adverse effect profiles of both drug groups were measured.
METHOD: In London and Toronto 154 patients who met DSM-III criteria for panic disorder with agoraphobia were randomised to alprazolam or placebo. Subjects in each drug group also received either exposure or relaxation. Treatment was from weeks 0 to 8 and was then tapered from weeks 8 to 16.
RESULTS: Mean alprazolam dose was 5 m

Seventy-three agoraphobic and 31 social phobic women, all rated unsuitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy, were compared regarding family and personal history, intelligence, personality and factors pertaining to the disorder. The same patients, with 11 men included in the social phobic group, were also compared regarding response to four randomly assigned types of treatment given over a 3 month period, with a 9 months' follow-up. The following differences were revealed: 1) Social phobias were associated with a higher social class of the parental home, higher education, higher scores on ver

PURPOSE: Sexual dysfunction associated with psychological reasons is one of the factors impacting unfulfilled marriages. There are limited data on treatment outcomes in this context. The aim of this study was determining the treatment of unconsummated marriage in psychogenic erectile dysfunction in Iranian Couples.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 66 cases were selected from individuals referred to the Family Health Clinic (from 2006 to 2019), who had unconsummated marriages and experienced psychogenic erectile dysfunction, meeting the inclusion criteria for the study. Research tools include

Background/Objectives:Tinnitus, the perception of sound without an external source, is a prevalent and often distressing condition with complex neurobiological and psychological underpinnings. A growing body of literature suggests a frequent co-occurrence between tinnitus and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. However, the extent to which these conditions are associated, and whether treatments targeting one domain impact the other, remains unclear. This scoping review aimed to (1) identify associations between tinnitus and mental health comorbidities, (2)

BACKGROUND: Multi-modular motion-assisted memory desensitization and reconsolidation therapy (3MDR) is a new psychological intervention for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 3MDR is immersive, delivered in a virtual reality environment, and emphasises engagement, recollection and reprocessing.
OBJECTIVE: Through a theory-driven examination of data relating to 10 out of 42 UK military veterans taking part in a trial of 3MDR, the principal objective was to explore the complex interrelationships between people, interventions and context and to investigate how factors within thes

INTRODUCTIONS: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a poorly understood chronic disorder characterized by bladder-related pain. Chronic psychological stress plays a key role in the exacerbation and development of IC/BPS via unclear mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the role of endothelin 1 (ET-1) and its receptors in the development of chronic stress-induced bladder dysfunction.
METHODS: Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed to chronic (10 days) water avoidance stress (WAS) or sham stress, with subgroups receiving capsaicin pretreatment to desensitize C-fiber afferents.

Background: Psychophysiological changes are part of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and can signal emotional engagement during psychological treatment. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore psychophysiological responses during multi-modular motion-assisted memory desensitization and reconsolidation (3MDR) therapy. Increased self-reported distress, substantially increased heart rate (HR) and breathing rate (BR) were expected at the start of therapy and predicted to improve over time. Since physical exercise demands during therapy were low, any large HR or BR resp

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is of unknown etiology and is the most common cause of retinopathy after age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. Vision loss results from fluid leakage and serous detachment in the macula. Five percent of patients develop chronic CSCR. It is predominantly found in middle-aged men (age-adjusted rates per 100,000: 9.9 for men and 1.7 for women) and is usually unilateral and reversible. Three-quarters of CSCR patients resolve within 3 months but 45% have recurrences, usually with only minor visual acuity changes.

One in four adults reports a clinically significant fear of dental injections, leading many to avoid dental care. While systematic desensitization is the most common therapeutic method for treating specific phobias such as fear of dental injections, lack of access to trained therapists, as well as dentists' lack of training and time in providing such a therapy, means that most fearful individuals are not able to receive the therapy needed to be able to receive necessary dental treatment. Computer Assisted Relaxation Learning (CARL) is a self-paced computerized treatment based on systematic des

BACKGROUND: Maintenance of treatment effect is important for the choice of treatment for social phobia.
AIMS: To examine the effect of exposure therapy and sertraline 28 weeks after cessation of medical treatment.
METHOD: In this study 375 patients with social phobia were randomised to treatment with sertraline or placebo for 24 weeks, with or without the addition of exposure therapy. Fifty-two weeks after inclusion, 328 patients were evaluated by the same psychometric tests as at baseline and the end of treatment (24 weeks).
RESULTS: The exposure therapy group and the placebo group had a f

Twenty patients with chronic obsessive-compulsive rituals were treated in a partially controlled design by in-vivo (real life) exposure with self-imposed response prevention. Treatment included 4-12 weeks as in-patients, and lasted a mean of 23 sessions. All patients were followed-up for at least two years. No patients dropped out during the trial, though one refused domiciliary treatment after discharge. Significant improvement in compulsions was found after three weeks of real-life exposure, and continued during follow-up. At two years follow-up 14 patients were much improved, one improved a

In this study the results for the validation of a reattributional training program applied to the fear of flying are presented. The program is made up of 13 (+/- 1) sessions and consists of three phases: Information; reattributional training; and the elaboration and application of the treatment designed by the patient with the help of the therapist. The program was applied to 24 patients while 24 other patients made up the waiting control group. The therapeutic success was evaluated by means of self-report scales, and by recording psychophysiological variables in a situation in which subjects

Atopic dermatitis is a common disease of childhood that remits with age. Its pathogenesis is still uncertain; histamine seems important but the role of IgE is uncertain. The condition presents with several clinical features, none of which alone is pathognomonic. In some patients, particularly infants, several observations may be needed to discover the chronic nature of the disease. Most patients with atopic dermatitis have excessive skin dryness and hand dermatitis; many have superficial pustular staphylococcal infection. Management focuses on measures that reduce trigger factors, such as skin

Fifty-seven chronic agoraphobic outpatients were treated by 12 hours of exposure in vivo on four days over two weeks to check the effects of oral diazepam versus placebo during group exposure, group versus individual exposure, and high versus medium anxiety arousal during individual exposure. The controlled parallel design allowed comparative evaluation of each treatment condition to six months follow-up. Assessment was blind with respect to drug and psychological treatment. Patients in all treatment conditions improved significantly in phobias and in related life areas. Outcome to group expos
