The aim of this study was to determine the differences in arch length, inter-canine distance, inter-premolar distance, intermolar distance and arch shape between dental discrepancies (crowding and spacing) in a sample of dental casts from the Afro-Colombian population of San Basilio de Palenque. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 63 subjects aged 11 to 57years, of Afro-Colombian origin, with full dentition from first molar to first molar, without extensive caries or restorations, and excluding casts with defects due to loss. The differences between ar

Multiple idiopathic external root resorption is a rare pathological condition usually detected as an incidental radiographic finding. External root resorption of permanent teeth is a multifactorial process related to several local and systemic factors. If an etiological factor cannot be identified for root resorption, the term "idiopathic" is applied. This report presents a case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption. The condition was found in a young female patient seeking orthodontic treatment due to malocclusion. This kind of resorption starts apically and progresses coronally, caus

A woman undergoing orthodontic treatment presented with recession and reduced keratinized gingiva on teeth 31 and 41. The patient declined creation of a donor site for conventional autogenous connective soft tissue grafting and opted for an acellular dermal matrix soft tissue substitute for root coverage. Orthodontic treatment followed, and the patient returned for orthognatic surgery after 12 years. Long-term follow up revealed that root coverage remained stable over time and creeping attachment on both teeth was observed. Unexpectedly, an increase in the width of keratinized gingiva was obse

When a tooth is extracted, the interproximal papilla recedes and the buccal bone collapses; as a result, restoring an edentulous space in the esthetic zone becomes a challenge. Various surgical reconstructions can be performed with different levels of risk and predictability. This article examines three nonsurgical approaches utilized to manage the same problem. One option involves placing a temporary bridge with an ovate pontic at the time of extraction to support the proximal papillae, the facial soft tissue, and the healing gingival tissue. If some time has passed since the extraction, the

Missing teeth are a concern to the patient and restorative dentist, and this social liability can be a multifactorial problem that involves esthetics, phonetics, disease, function, and stabilization. Dental caries, trauma, and periodontal disease are usually identified by pain, food impaction, discomfort, and lack of esthetics or poor phonetics. Restorative dentists are concerned with all aspects of the general health and appearance of the stomatognathic system and not only have the responsibility for immediate correction of an extant problem, but also for ensuring long-term "outcomes." The pe

Posterior crossbite might cause serious long-term functional problems if not early treated. Nevertheless, in older patients, treatment might include palatal expansion in order to correct such malocclusion. In view of the above, this article aims at reporting late correction of bilateral posterior crossbite associated with Angle Class III malocclusion, right subdivision, with consequent midline shift (good skeletal pattern). The case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO), with DI equal to or greater than 10, as a requirement for the title of cert

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic lesion of the lip buccal mucosa may develop due to a repetitive lip sucking habit, secondary to a dental space which opened in the dental in adult patients. The non surgical treatment approach is based on increasing of patient's awareness to the sucking habit along with the creation of a change in the oral and dental surrounding tissues. The following case included a failure to identify a traumatic habit of lower lip sucking, resulting in a buccal mucosa overgrowth. Combined conservative periodontal and orthodontic approach will be presented to address this clinical issue

Witkop's tooth and nail syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder of ectodermal dysplasia characterized by hypodontia and nail dysplasia. Mutations in MSX-1 have been shown to be associated with this syndrome. There is failure of development and eruption of the dentition. Tooth shape may vary; the most common forms are conical and narrow crowns. The nails may be spoon shaped and slow growing and affect both finger and toe nails. The nail involvement is more severe in childhood. The present case describes a 14-year-old boy who showed the characteristic features of Witkop's syndrome. A mult

The aim of this study was to show the micromorphologic findings (epithelium, connective tissue, bone) in a region of pronounced gingival invagination after space closure by analyzing a maxilla taken in autopsy from a 19-year-old woman who was orthodontically treated. The dental records were also at our disposal. The second left premolar was congenitally absent. This area displayed before therapeutic horizontal bone atrophy. For space closure, the first upper left molar was moved mesially with a fixed appliance. After space closure, pronounced gingival invagination was diagnosed. The lateral se

Background/Objectives: The maxillary labial frenum (MLF) is a connective tissue structure attaching the upper lip to the maxillary alveolar process. Its morphology varies significantly among individuals and is often most prominent during early childhood. While hypertrophic or low-attaching frena have been associated with diastemas, feeding issues, and speech impairments, there is no causal evidence supporting early surgical intervention. This review aims to examine current evidence regarding the timing and necessity of frenectomy procedures and to evaluate the implications of early versus dela

Homeostasis in the human body results from the tight regulation of several events, since too little inflammation disrupts the process of tissue repair and remodeling, whereas too much exerts a collateral effect by causing tissue damage with life-threatening consequences. In some clinical conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), inflammation functions as a double-edged sword by either enabling or inhibiting cancer development and progression. Generally, cancer develops through evasion mechanisms that regulate cell growth, causing a high rate of uncontrolled proliferation, and mecha

The aim of this study was to investigate the space closure and occlusal changes in 11 subjects (mean age 11.8 years) with normal occlusion and agenesis of the mandibular second premolar, after extraction of the mandibular secondary primary molar and the maxillary second premolar on the side of the agenesis. The treatment started when the first premolars came into occlusion and the subjects were followed for 4 years. Dental casts were taken at the start of treatment and after 1, 2 and 4 years, and lateral cephalograms were taken at the start of treatment and after 2 and 4 years. Space closure,

OBJECTIVE: Acromegaly is a disorder associated with excessive levels of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). In general, GH/IGF-1 excess leads to morphologic craniofacial and acral changes as well as cardiometabolic complications, but the phenotypic changes and clinical presentation of acromegaly differ across species. Here, we review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation and management of acromegaly in humans and cats, and we provide a systematic comparison between this disease across these different species.
DESIGN: A comprehensive literature review of pathophy
