Serologic evidence for selected infectious diseases in Marsican brown bears (Ursus arctos marsicanus) in Italy (2004-09).

We tested 30 serum samples collected during 2004-09 from 22 free-ranging Marsican brown bears (Ursus arctos marsicanus) in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise, Italy, for antibodies against canine distemper virus (CDV), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), Brucella spp., and eight Leptospira interrogans sensu lato serovars. Antibody to CDV was detected in 11 samples (37%); only two bears (10%) had detectable CAV-2 and Brucella spp. antibodies; three bears were positive for L. interrogans serovar Bratislava; and one sample had antibody against L. inter

Exposure of free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) to infectious and parasitic disease agents in the Noël Kempff Mercado National Park, Bolivia.

Maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) are neotropic mammals, listed as a CITES Appendix II species, with a distribution south of the Amazon forest from Bolivia, through northern Argentina and Paraguay and into eastern Brazil and northern Uruguay. Primary threats to the survival of free-ranging maned wolves include habitat loss, road kills, and shooting by farmers. An additional threat to the conservation of maned wolves is the risk of morbidity and mortality due to infectious and parasitic diseases. Captive maned wolves are susceptible to, and die from, common infectious diseases of domestic do

Serological survey of selected pathogens of free-ranging foxes in southern Argentina, 1998--2001.

A serological survey was conducted in the Patagonia region of Argentina to estimate the prevalence of nine disease agents within the populations of free-ranging culpeo (Dusicyon culpaeus) and grey (Dusicyon griseus) foxes. The disease agents were Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), Brucella, canine adenovirus (CAV), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV), Encephalitozoon cuniculi, Leptospira, Neospora caninum, and Toxoplasma gondii. A total of 84 foxes were sampled (28 culpeo and 56 grey), and 73% of the sera had antibodies against one or more pathogens. Among these seropositive ser

Infectious and parasitic diseases of captive carnivores, with special emphasis on the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes).

Captive carnivores are susceptible to a wide array of infectious and parasitic diseases, which reflects the diversity of the seven families of Carnivora. Unfortunately, relatively few in-depth studies have been conducted on diseases of non-domestic carnivores, and much remains to be learned, especially regarding diseases of small carnivores (e.g. mustelids, viverrids and procyonids). The more important infectious diseases of carnivores include rabies, canine distemper, and diseases caused by parvoviruses, coronaviruses and herpesviruses. Few parasitic or bacterial pathogens are significant in

Sequence analysis of the mumps virus mRNA encoding the P protein.

The nucleotide sequence of the mumps virus phospho- or polymerase-associated (P) protein mRNA has been determined by sequencing a full-length cDNA clone and confirmed by partially sequencing the mRNA and the genome. The mRNA contains 1311 nucleotides excluding the poly(A) and encodes a protein of 390 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 41,574. Three small polypeptides were seen in in vitro translation of viral mRNA and hybrid-selected P mRNA, possibly representing internal initiation in the same reading frame of the P protein. A second overlapping reading frame is predicted from

Canine parvovirus vaccination and immunisation failures: Are we far from disease eradication?

Despite extensive vaccination, canine parvovirus (CPV) remains a leading infectious cause of canine mortality, especially among juveniles. This review provides an update on CPV vaccine types and vaccination protocols. The design of CPV prevention strategies and vaccination programs with a goal of herd immunity has been hampered by deficiencies of studies that model companion animal viral infections and inform an understanding of the basic reproduction number. However, the most important issue in eradication of CPV disease is represented by immunisation failures including: i) the presence of in

Early occurrence of apoptosis in lymphoid tissues from chickens infected with strains of Newcastle disease virus of varying virulence.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV), the causative agent of Newcastle disease, is a prevalent problem in the poultry industry and often the cause of severe economic loss. There are many strains of the virus and these have varying virulence. The most virulent strains cause systemic lesions of lymphoid tissues, with necrosis and severe lymphoid depletion. Less virulent strains do not cause as much necrosis, but may predispose to secondary infection with other pathogens. Apoptosis or programmed cell death, has been demonstrated to play a role in the pathogenesis of other paramyxovirus infections, notab

Dental anomalies and lesions in Eastern Atlantic harbor seals, Phoca vitulina vitulina (Carnivora, Phocidae), from the German North Sea.

Skulls of 1,901 Eastern Atlantic harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina) were systematically studied for externally visible dental anomalies and lesions. The sample comprised 927 males and 974 female individuals, with age at death ranging between 1 week and 25 years. Most of the skulls originated from animals collected in 1988, when the population suffered from a mass mortality event caused by the phocine distemper virus (PDV). Mean age (± SD) of females (6.7 ± 6.4 years) was higher (p = 0.002) than that of males (5.9 ± 5.2 years). In 264 individuals, one or more teeth were missing either conge

Vaccination and Associated Adverse Events in Dogs Previously Treated for Primary Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia.

This study described the rate of vaccine reactions in a population of dogs receiving vaccines after diagnosis of primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). A secondary objective was to describe the time elapsed between vaccination and initial diagnosis of IMHA. A medical record search identified cases meeting criteria for primary IMHA. Owners and referring veterinarians were surveyed regarding vaccination of the dog following diagnosis. Referring veterinarians were surveyed regarding vaccination prior to diagnosis of IMHA. A completed survey was returned in 44 cases. Twenty-two dogs rece

Pulmonary pneumocystosis in a captive kinkajou with molecular evidence of a novel Pneumocystis lineage.

An 11-mo-old, intact male captive kinkajou (Potos flavus) was submitted for postmortem investigation because of emaciation and hindlimb overgrooming. Histologically, alveolar airspaces were filled with fungal structures that were morphologically and histochemically consistent with Pneumocystis spp. PCR of pulmonary tissue was negative for canine distemper virus and positive for Pneumocystis spp. Molecular testing yielded amplification of the Pneumocystis spp. mitochondrial large-subunit rRNA (mtLSU rRNA, 510 bp) and the small-subunit rRNA (mtSSU rRNA, 565 bp). Phylogenetic analysis suggested a

Bacterial and Viral Pathogens with One Health Relevance in Invasive Raccoons (Procyon lotor, Linné 1758) in Southwest Germany.

In Europe, raccoons are invasive neozoons with their largest population in Germany. Globally, this mesocarnivore acts as a wildlife reservoir for many (non-)zoonotic (re-)emerging pathogens, but very little epidemiological data is available for southwest Germany. This exploratory study aimed to screen free-ranging raccoons in Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW, Germany) for the occurrence of selected pathogens with One Health relevance. Organ tissue and blood samples collected from 102 animals, obtained by hunters in 2019 and 2020, were subsequently analysed for two bacterial and four viral pathogens usin

Morbilliviral encephalitis in a striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba calf from Italy.

A free-living, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba calf was stranded on the Latium coast of Italy in November 2009. Significant neuropathological findings included non-suppurative meningoencephalitis, microgliosis, neuronal degeneration, astrocytosis, and occasional multinucleate syncytia. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for Morbillivirus were positive exclusively from the brain, with morbilliviral antigen and nucleic acid being detected in neurons and, to a lesser extent, in astrocytes. A low neutralizing antibody titer (1:10) against

Intrathecal synthesis of major immunoglobulin classes in inflammatory diseases of the canine CNS.

The IgG index, IgM and IgA contents in cerebrospinal fluid and serum were examined retrospectively using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 69 dogs with inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases of various aetiologies. Fifteen normal dogs were used as controls. After measuring IgG and albumin contents in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the IgG index was calculated according to the formula of Link and Tibbling to demonstrate intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis. A surprisingly high number of animals with encephalitis, including dogs with protracted diseases such as ch

X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency in the dog.

This study documents the occurrence of a form of X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in the dog with clinical, immunologic, and pathologic features similar to those of X-linked SCID with B cells in man. The disease in the dog is characterized by growth retardation and increased susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections in young pups. Affected pups have all died or were euthanatized by 5 months with signs of canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, or bacterial pneumonia. Laboratory findings include normal numbers of circulating B lymphocytes and normal concentrations of seru

VENOM HEMOLYSIS AFTER SPLENECTOMY, INCLUDING THE RESISTANCE OF THE ERYTHROCYTES OF NORMAL DOGS TO THE HEMOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF COBRA VENOM.

1. The resistance of erythrocytes of dogs to the hemolytic activity of cobra venom is increased after splenectomy. 2. This increased resistance was observed as early as 4 days after splenectomy and usually persisted for a period of about 3 weeks, when the resistance gradually decreased to normal or slightly beyond. 3. The decrease of resistance to the hemolytic activity of venom for the erythrocytes of splenectomized dogs following the primary increase is apparently coincident with the anemia following splenectomy. An intercurrent infection, such as distemper, tends to reduce the resistance of
