Quality of life and level of physical activity of individuals with temporomandibular disorders with and without otological symptoms: Secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Otological symptoms (OS) are highly prevalent in individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Individuals with TMD and OS have more neck disability and decreased deep neck muscles endurance when compared to individuals without OS. However, no studies have evaluated whether OS is associated with lower Quality of Life (QoL) and worse levels of physical activity. This study aimed to evaluate the QoL and level of physical activity of individuals with TMD with and without OS. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 62 individuals with TMD were allocated into 2 groups

Full recovery of a 13-year-old boy with pediatric Ramsay Hunt syndrome using a shorter course of aciclovir and steroid at lower doses: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Reports on children with Ramsay Hunt syndrome are limited in the literature, resulting in uncertainty regarding the clinical manifestations and outcome of this syndrome. Treatment for Ramsay Hunt syndrome is usually with antivirals, although there is no evidence for beneficial effect on the outcome of Ramsay Hunt syndrome in adults (insufficient data on children exists). Here, we report a case of Ramsay Hunt syndrome occurring in a child who inadvertently received a lower dose of aciclovir and steroid administered for shorter than is usual. Our patient made a full recovery. CASE

Diagnostic Yield and Therapeutic Impact of Face and Neck Imaging in Patients Referred with Otalgia without Clinically Overt Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Otalgia may be secondary to serious pathology, such as upper aerodigestive tract malignancies, and CT or MR imaging of the skull base, face, and neck is often performed to detect clinically occult lesions. The diagnostic yield, management impact, and therapeutic impact of imaging in this clinical scenario, however, have yet to be elucidated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT and MR imaging in patients who presented with otalgia without clinically overt disease was retrospectively analyzed from a single center over a 9-year period. The cohort was subdivided into groups, dependi

Post-stapedectomy granuloma: a devastating complication.

OBJECTIVES: This paper reports three cases of severe post-stapedectomy granuloma, emphasising the variable presentation of this devastating complication and the challenges of its management. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of three cases of post-stapedectomy granuloma requiring surgical debulking between 2010 and 2015. Clinical symptoms, serial imaging, histopathology and post-operative outcomes were considered. RESULTS: Intra-operatively, extensive granulation tissue with erosion of the otic capsule was found. There was spread along the VIIth and VIIIth cranial nerves to the c

Facial Weakness, Otalgia, and Hemifacial Spasm: A Novel Neurological Syndrome in a Case-Series of 3 Patients With Rheumatic Disease.

Bell palsy occurs in different rheumatic diseases, causes hemifacial weakness, and targets the motor branch of the 7th cranial nerve. Severe, persistent, and refractory otalgia having features of neuropathic pain (ie, burning and allodynic) does not characteristically occur with Bell palsy. Whereas aberrant regeneration of the 7th cranial nerve occurring after a Bell palsy may lead to a variety of clinical findings, hemifacial spasm only rarely occurs. We identified in 3 rheumatic disease patients (2 with Sjögren syndrome, 1 with rheumatoid arthritis) a previously unreported neurological syndr

Tensor tympani muscle: strange chewing muscle.

This work seeks to alert medical and odontological staff to understanding and using interdisciplinary handling for detecting different pathologies common otic symptoms. It offers better tools for this shared symptomatology during therapy s conservative phase. Tensor tympani muscle physiology and function in the middle ear have been veiled, even when their dysfunction and anatomical relationships may explain a group of confused otic symptoms during conventional clinical evaluation. Middle ear muscles share a common embryological and functional origin with chewing and facial muscles. This articl

Otalgia in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders.

Otalgia without organic causes is a common symptom in temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) patients even though the etiology is controversial. Investigations of the influence of TMD treatment on otalgia are scarce. This follow-up study analyzed the clinical profile of TMD patients with otalgia and evaluated the treatment outcome. A total of 400 consecutive TMD patients (75% women) were divided in two groups: group 1 consisted of 233 patients (58%) with no complaint of ear symptoms and group 2 consisted of 167 patients (42%) with complaint of otalgia. The patients were examined with a standardiz

Tinnitus and vertigo in patients with temporomandibular disorder.

The association of tinnitus and vertigo with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) has been debated for many years. The observation that patients with TMD have otologic symptoms is confounded because tinnitus and vertigo are common symptoms in the normal population. The present study was conducted to determine if tinnitus and vertigo are actually more prevalent in patients with TMD than in appropriate age-matched controls. One control group was recruited from patients seeking care for health maintenance and the other from patients seeking routine dental care. We surveyed 1032 patients: 338 had TMD

Referred otalgia.

Referred otalgia is a challenging symptom, with the burden on the physician to identify the source. Only by careful patient history and physical examination can all causes in this extensive differential diagnosis be excluded. In the absence of primary otologic pathology, referred pain from a head and neck carcinoma must be considered foremost and ruled out.

Vestibular neuronitis. Pathogenesis in the view of virological study of CSF.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 15 patients with vestibular neuronitis were virologically examined and analyzed, and compared to those from 16 patients with Hunt's syndrome. The results were as follows: The CSF protein in vestibular neuronitis showed an increase, beginning about two weeks after the onset of vertigo, while the cell count remained normal. The CSF protein in Hunt's syndrome rose, but its progress was different from that in vestibular neuronitis. In both diseases, the increase in CSF protein seemed to be due to protein originating in the blood; the increase was probably cau

Acute otalgia in children - findings and diagnosis.

One hundred and seventy-one children up to 15 years of age and with acute otalgia were examined to find out whether otalgia or any other symptoms were so closely related to acute otitis media (AOM) as to make otoscopic examination unnecessary. AOM was diagnosed in 46%, simplex otitis in 15%, serous otitis media (SOM) in 17%, and normal eardrums in 22%. Children with AOM had fever and spontaneous perforation of the eardrums in 78% and 30% of the cases, respectively. Of the children who had not AOM (54%), the otalgia could in most cases be classified as referred pain due to, for instance, discom

Chronic otorrhoea, otalgia and hearing loss not responding to antibiotics and tympanoplasty surgery.

Chronic otorrhoea from a tympanic membrane perforation is common. We present the case of a patient who had already received seemingly adequate treatment for his condition in the past. Yet, he presented to our outpatient clinic with worsening otalgia and otorrhoea, progressive hearing loss and a new tympanic membrane perforation. After a thorough otological evaluation, the patient's medical history and the histological specimen from a previous operation were reviewed. The findings met the diagnostic criteria of eosinophilic otitis media. After treatment with topic triamcinolone through the perf

Comparison of clinical outcomes of three different packing materials in the treatment of severe acute otitis externa.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the clinical outcomes of biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam versus ribbon gauze and ear wick in the treatment of severe acute otitis externa. METHODS: Ninety-two adults with severe acute otitis externa were randomly assigned to groups receiving ear wick (n = 28), ribbon gauze (n = 34) or biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam (n = 30). Clinical efficacy, in terms of otalgia, oedema, erythema and tenderness of the external auditory canal, was assessed before packing was applied and at follow up on the 3rd and 7th days of presentation. RESULTS: All packing mater

Ear pruritus: a new otologic finding related to temporomandibular disorder.

This prospective clinical study evaluated the correlation among temporomandibular disorder (TMD), otologic manifestations, and parafunctional habits in a sample of 100 patients with TMD. The subjects were evaluated by clinical examination, use of a simplified anamnestic questionnaire for TMD diagnosis, and the investigation of otologic manifestations and parafunctional habits of the stomatognathic system. The prevalence of TMD and correlations with otologic manifestations and parafunctional habits were calculated. Patients ranged in age from 13 to 70 years, and 79.0% of the patients were betwe

Geniculate neuralgia: long-term results of surgical treatment.

A rare cause of otalgia is geniculate neuralgia. In its most typical form, it is characterized by severe paroxysmal neuralgic pain centered directly in the ear. The pain can be of a gradual onset and of a dull, persistent nature, but occasionally it is sharp and stabbing. When the pain becomes intractable, an operation to surgically excise the nervus intermedius and geniculate ganglion via the middle cranial fossa approach is indicated. The purpose of this article is to review the long-term outcomes in 64 patients who were treated in this manner. Findings indicate that excision of the nervus i

Aural symptoms in temporomandibular disorder patients attending a craniofacial pain unit.

AIMS: To determine (1) the prevalence of aural symptoms in orofacial pain patients and (2) a potential association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and aural health, while controlling for covariates known to be associated with TMD or auditory dysfunction. METHODS: In a retrospective study, health questionnaires, medical histories, clinical findings, diagnoses, and treatments were systematically retrieved from the charts of 776 patients. The dates of initial assessment ranged from May 1987 to June 1999. Of the included subjects, 39.7% were female; the median age was 39 years; 16.4% di
