Willingness to receive medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD): A longitudinal analysis of social network support.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD, i.e., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) save lives, but many individuals are unwilling to receive MOUD treatment. Few longitudinal studies have examined whether social network support for MOUD is related to willingness to receive MOUD. METHODS: Egocentric network data were collected from 393 adults with OUD who were incarcerated in 14 Kentucky prisons; follow-up data were collected about six months post-release. For each named alter, participants (egos) reported on perceived alters' support for buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone

Musical neglect training for chronic persistent left hemispatial neglect with right hemiplegia post-stroke: a case report.

A 69-year-old right-handed man, who initially suffered a stroke 8 years ago and experienced two recurrences since then, presented with right hemiplegia and left hemispatial neglect as a post-stroke syndrome in the chronic phase. This report demonstrates the use of active musical instrument playing with Musical Neglect Training (MNT®) to improve severe left-side neglect and activities of daily living (ADLs). In addition to physical and occupational therapy, individual MNT® was incorporated into the patient's rehabilitation plan to improve his hemispatial neglect. At the initiation of the interv

Seeing without a Scene: Neurological Observations on the Origin and Function of the Dorsal Visual Stream.

In all vertebrates, visual signals from each visual field project to the opposite midbrain tectum (called the superior colliculus in mammals). The tectum/colliculus computes visual salience to select targets for context-contingent visually guided behavior: a frog will orient toward a small, moving stimulus (insect prey) but away from a large, looming stimulus (a predator). In mammals, visual signals competing for behavioral salience are also transmitted to the visual cortex, where they are integrated with collicular signals and then projected via the dorsal visual stream to the parietal and fr

Validation of the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy (LSRP) scale in the non-institutionalized Lebanese population.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy has been described as "the first personality disorder to be recognized in psychiatry". It has three core features: affective, interpersonal, and behavioral. The Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy (LSRP) scale is used to screen for and measure psychopathy. Our study aims to validate the LSRP as a tool to measure psychopathy in the non-institutionalized Lebanese population. METHODS: We surveyed Lebanese individuals residing in Lebanon and aged 18 through 65. It was a convenience sample collected via an online survey. 534 Lebanese participants completed the survey and were

Investigating the impact of early deafness on learned action-effect contingency for action linked to peripheral sensory effects.

Investigating peripheral visual processing in individuals with early auditory deprivation is a critical research area in the field of neuroscience, since it helps understanding the phenomenon of sensory adaptation and brain plasticity after sensory loss. Prior research has already demonstrated that the absence of auditory input, which is crucial to detect events occurring out of the central egocentric visual space, leads to an improved processing of visual and tactile stimuli occurring in peripheral regions of the sensory space. Nevertheless, no prior studies have explored whether such enhance

Social network tie functions of social support and social influence and adult smoking abstinence.

Adults' social network ties serve multiple functions and play prominently in quitting smoking. We examined three types of adults' egocentric social networks, including family, friends, and friends online to investigate how two network characteristics with major relevance to health behavior, network size and tie closeness, related to the emotional and confidant support and to pro- and anti-smoking social influence these ties may transmit. We also examine whether the social support and social influence constructs related to smoking abstinence. We utilized baseline and 7-day abstinence survey dat

Social Networks, Cultural Pride, and Historical Loss Among Non-Reservation American Indian / Alaska Native Emerging Adults.

Health disparities among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations in the United States are the result of historical traumas, such as colonization, forced relocation, and federal policies focused on cultural assimilation. Culturally-tailored health interventions aim to address intergenerational trauma by emphasizing cultural strengths and building positive social connections. In this article, we explore the social network characteristics of participants of the first culturally-tailored health intervention for AI/AN emerging adults (18-25) living outside of tribal lands. Participants (N

Distinct neural response to visual perspective and body size in the extrastriate body area.

Neuroimaging research has independently implicated the extrastriate body area (EBA) in distinguishing between different visual perspectives and morphologies of bodies within visual processing. However, the combined processing of these physical attributes towards neural EBA response remains unclear, and may be crucial in influencing higher-order, aesthetic evaluation of bodies. Indeed, EBA alterations amongst eating disorder patients have been associated with disturbances in body image, and disruption to EBA activity amongst healthy individuals has been shown to influence aesthetic evaluations

Neglect dyslexia as a word-centred impairment: A single case study.

Neglect Dyslexia is a neuropsychological syndrome in which patients commit consistently lateralised letter omission, addition, and substitution errors when reading individual words. Although neglect dyslexia frequently co-occurs with domain-general visuospatial neglect, some cases of neglect dyslexia may be best characterised as a dissociable impairment within a word-centred reference frame. This investigation employs data from a single case study of a patient who demonstrated word-centred neglect dyslexia to clarify neglect dyslexia's relationship with visuospatial neglect. Through your eyes or mine? The neural correlates of mental state recognition in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) can impair social cognition. This study investigated whether patients with HD exhibit neural differences to healthy controls when they are considering mental and physical states relating to the static expressions of human eyes. Thirty-two patients with HD and 28 age-matched controls were scanned with fMRI during two versions of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task: The standard version requiring mental state judgments, and a comparison version requiring judgments about age. HD was associated with behavioral deficits on only the mental state eyes task. Contrasting the

Effects of β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate on working memory and cognitive flexibility in an animal model of aging.

OBJECTIVES: Normal aging results in cognitive decline and nutritional interventions have been suggested as potential approaches for mitigating these deficits. Here, we used rats to investigate the effects of short- and long-term dietary supplementation with the leucine metabolite β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate (HMB) on working memory and cognitive flexibility. METHODS: Beginning ∼12 months of age, male and female Long-Evans rats were given twice daily access to sipper tubes containing calcium HMB (450 mg/kg) or vehicle (285 mg/kg calcium lactate) in a sucrose solution (20% w/v). Malnutrition in the first year of life and personality at age 40.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood malnutrition is associated with cognitive and behavioral impairment during childhood and adolescence, but studies in adulthood are limited. METHODS: Using the NEO-PI-R personality inventory, we compared personality profiles at 37-43 years of age (M 40.3 years, SD 1.9) of Barbadian adults who had experienced moderate-to-severe protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) in the first year of life (n = 77) with healthy controls, who were former classmates of the index cases and were matched for age, gender, and handedness in childhood (n = 57). Sexual partner concurrency and sexual risk among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender American Indian/Alaska natives.

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Natives suffer pervasive health disparities, including disproportionately high rates of HIV. Sexual network dynamics, including concurrency and sexual mixing patterns, are key determinants of HIV disparities. METHODS: We analyzed data from the first national study of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender American Indian and Alaska Natives to examine the prevalence of concurrency, sex and race of partners, and level of risk across different partnership patterns. Egocentric network data were analyzed at the level of the respondents, who were grouped acco

Ventral striatal dopamine modulation of different forms of behavioral flexibility.

Different forms of behavioral flexibility are facilitated by interactions between separate regions of the prefrontal cortex and their striatal outputs. However, the contribution of ventral striatal dopamine (DA) to these functions is unclear. The present study assessed the involvement of DA receptors in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) core on either between- or within-strategy shifts using operant chamber-based tasks. Strategy set-shifting required rats initially to learn a visual-cue discrimination and, on the following day, shift to using an egocentric spatial response strategy to obtain reward.

Small-conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channels: Heterogeneous affinity in rat brain structures and cognitive modulation by specific blockers.

Small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels (K(Ca)2) generating the medium afterhyperpolarization seen after an action potential modulate the neuronal integration signal. The effects of two K(Ca)2 channel blockers, apamin, specific to K(Ca)2.2 and K(Ca)2.3 channels, and lei-Dab7, which binds to K(Ca)2.2 channels only, were compared to evaluate the involvement of K(Ca)2 channel subunits in behavior, spatial learning and memory in rats. Intracerebroventricular (9-5 ng) injections of lei-dab7 decreased locomotor activity, food intake and body weight in rats deprived of food. A dose of

Neck proprioception and spatial orientation in cervical dystonia.

Neck muscle vibration is known to influence body orientation and posture during locomotion and stance in normal subjects. To verify the hypothesis that neck proprioceptive input can be misinterpreted in patients with cervical dystonia (CD), lateral continuous vibration was applied to the sternocleidomastoid muscle during both stepping-in-place and quiet stance, with eyes closed. The orienting responses of CD patients were compared with those of normal subjects. Vibration effects on body orientation during stepping and stance were apparently different from normal, since no effects were seen whe

What is straight ahead to a patient with torticollis?

Vestibular and neck proprioceptive signals are known to be used in judging the locations of objects in space and relative to the body. Given that these signals are asymmetric in patients with spasmodic torticollis, one would expect such patients to have abnormal spatial perception. We tested this idea by measuring patients' perception of visual straight ahead (VSA) under various conditions: with the body in its primary position, i.e. with the head and trunk as closely aligned as possible, and after well defined passive rotations of the head and/or trunk. In the primary body position, patients'

Predictive Models to Identify Factors Associated with a High One-Time Sexual Partnership Rate Among U.S. Men Who Have Sex with Men.

One-time sexual partnerships have the potential to generate densely connected sexual networks. The distribution of one-time partnerships among MSM is often right-skewed, wherein a small proportion of MSM have a high number of partners. Identifying a set of covariates to predict who these individuals are can aid in developing and deploying STI prevention interventions and contribute to our understanding of STI transmission dynamics. We fit several negative binomial models to estimate the count of one-time partnerships among US MSM using data from a web-based egocentric network survey. Penalized
