Molecular detection of vector-borne pathogens in wild and domestic carnivores and their ticks at the human-wildlife interface.

Urbanization of natural areas is considered one of the causes of the current apparent emergence of infectious diseases. Carnivores are among the species that adapt well to urban and periurban environments, facilitating cross-species disease transmission with domestic dogs and cats, and potentially with their owners. The prevalence of vector-borne pathogens (VBP) of zoonotic and veterinary interest was studied in sympatric wild and domestic carnivores into Barcelona Metropolitan Area (NE Spain). Blood or spleen samples from 130 animals, including 34 common genets (Genetta genetta), 12 red foxes

Seasonal variation of anti-Leishmania infantum antibodies and laboratory abnormalities in dogs with leishmaniosis.

BACKGROUND: In dogs affected by leishmaniosis, laboratory abnormalities and anti-Leishmania antibody titers are crucial for initial and relapse diagnosis, as well as for informing therapeutic decisions. This study aimed to evaluate laboratory findings in L. infantum seropositive dogs during and after the transmission season on the basis of the evidence that anti-L. infantum antibody titers vary between sand fly and nonsand fly transmission periods in dogs from areas where leishmaniosis is endemic. METHODS: In September 2021 (transmission season; T1) and January 2022 (nontransmission season; T

Data analysis workflow for the detection of canine vector-borne pathogens using 16 S rRNA Next-Generation Sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) impact both human and veterinary medicine and pose special public health challenges. The main bacterial vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) of importance in veterinary medicine include Anaplasma spp., Bartonella spp., Ehrlichia spp., and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia. Taxon-targeted PCR assays are the current gold standard for VBP diagnostics but limitations on the detection of genetically diverse organisms support a novel approach for broader detection of VBPs. We present a methodology for genetic characterization of VBPs using Next-Generation Sequencing (N

Tick-, Flea-, and Louse-Borne Diseases of Public Health and Veterinary Significance in Nigeria.

Mosquito-borne diseases are common high-impact diseases in tropical and subtropical areas. However, other non-mosquito vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) may share their geographic distribution, seasonality, and clinical manifestations, thereby contributing their share to the morbidity and mortality caused by febrile illnesses in these regions. The purpose of this work was to collect and review existing information and identify knowledge gaps about tick, flea-, and louse-borne diseases of veterinary and public health significance in Nigeria. Full-length articles about VBPs were reviewed and relevan

[Coxiella burnetii: what is the reality?].

After the Second World War, in Italy Q Fever or Coxiellosis has been shown a significant relevance, a recrudescence with an epidemic state for over ten years. Later, the infectious disease occurred as endemic since the 80s, the outbreaks were just isolated. Workflows analysis of some authors has demonstrated the spread out of the infection throughout Italian herds with a prevalence ranging from 1.2 per cent to 10 per cent. Our survey carried out throughout Campania area in cattle has shown a real positivity over 14 per cent performing the IFAT for the detection of IgG antibodies for Coxiella b

Canine distemper infections, with special reference to South Africa, with a review of the literature.

Canine distemper virus is a member of the genus Morbillivirus of the family Paramyxoviridae that causes severe disease in dogs and a range of wild mammals. The clinical signs relate essentially to the respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. In South Africa, infection with Ehrlichia canis and canine parvovirus may present similarly Many dogs will initially present with a wide range of central nervous system signs without any history of systemic disease. A recent South African study evaluating ante mortem diagnosis highlighted the importance of recognising clinical signs, cere

Prevalence and risk factors for selected canine vector-borne diseases in Greece.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) represent a wide group of diseases of major significance for canine health. In addition to their veterinary importance, many of these diseases are of great zoonotic concern, posing a risk of potential transmission to humans. To date, there has been scant knowledge regarding the prevalence, distribution and risk factors of CVBDs in Greece. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to update the current knowledge on the seroprevalence of Dirofilaria immitis, Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) in dogs in

Breed-specific immune regulation under endemic exposure to Leishmania infantum and other vector-borne pathogens in a native Mediterranean canine population.

BACKGROUND: Canine leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania infantum remains a major zoonotic concern in the Mediterranean basin, where native breeds may have evolved adaptive immune mechanisms under long-term endemic exposure. The Fonni dog, indigenous to Sardinia, may represent a model of such adaptation. This study aimed to compare cytokine and growth factor profiles between Fonni dogs and German Shepherd dogs exposed to L. infantum and other vector-borne pathogens, to investigate potential breed-associated immune regulatory patterns. METHODS: Fifty-nine clinically healthy dogs (Fonni and German

Bloodmeal analysis via COI-targeted DNA capture and enrichment identifies non-cattle hosts of Amblyomma variegatum on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

BACKGROUND: Amblyomma variegatum threatens the Caribbean cattle industry owing to its role as a vector for Ehrlichia ruminantium, the obligate intracellular bacterium that causes heartwater disease, an economically important and potentially fatal ruminant disease. Amblyomma variegatum is also a public health concern as a vector for Rickettsia africae, the causative agent of African tick-bite fever. Efforts to eradicate A. variegatum on Caribbean islands are ongoing to protect cattle from disease and prevent the spread of the vector and diseases to the American mainland. However, reinfestations

Identification and pathogen screening of ectoparasites from companion animals in urban Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Ticks and fleas are vectors of medically important infectious diseases globally, such as Rickettsiae. These pathogens are frequently reported in Southeast Asia, including Laos; however, there are very few comprehensive reports on their prevalence and vector diversity in urban areas. This study collected ectoparasites from companion animals to assess pathogen prevalence and exposure risk. In five veterinary clinics across Vientiane capital, ectoparasites were collected from dogs and cats and identified to the species level using both morphological and molecular methods. Ectoparasite DNA samples
