We report the pathological findings in cases of acrylic implants obtained by direct intratumoral injection of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) and N-butyl-cyano-acrylate (NBCA). Direct intratumoral injection of acrylic implants was performed for a variety of primary and secondary bone lesions. These types of treatments have been used at our institution in the last 4 years for 40 vertebroplasty (PMMA) procedures and for nine bone lesions of other locations (PMMA, NBCA). Postmortem histology became available for 1 case of PMMA and for 5 cases with NBCA intratumoral acrylic implants. The pathologic

Owing to the presence of the blood-brain barrier and the lack of significant specificity towards tumor cells after entry into the brain, the unsuccessful delivery of anticancer drugs to the treatment of brain tumors. The hypothesis that cholesterol-PEG co-modified poly (N-butyl) cyanoacrylate nanoparticles (CLS-PEG NPs) are an effective carrier for the treatment of brain tumors was verified, and the mechanism of its treatment for brain tumors was preliminarily explored. In this study, we used multifunctional poly (N-butyl) cyanoacrylate nanoparticles modified with cholesterol and polyethylene

INTRODUCTION: Thalamic hemorrhage caused by cerebrovascular disease is unusual. We describe a rare case of thalamic hemorrhage due to rupture of an aneurysm at the feeder of a tentorial dural arteriovenous fistula in the Galen region mimicking a hypertensive hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old woman with sudden-onset right hemiparesis was diagnosed with left thalamic hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography revealed hemorrhage caused by rupture of an aneurysm at the feeder artery of a dural arteriovenous fistula at tentorial edge near the vein of Galen. The aneurysm was located at the distal

BACKGROUND: The management of acute esophageal variceal bleeding remains a clinical challenge. Band ligation is the main therapeutic option, but it may be technically difficult to perform in active bleeders. This may necessitate an alternative therapy for this group of patients. This study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of sclerotherapy versus cyanoacrylate injection for management of actively bleeding esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients.
METHODS: This prospective study included 113 cirrhotic patients with actively bleeding esophageal varices. They were randomly treated

A 48-year-old woman with alcoholic liver cirrhosis was admitted to our hospital because of hematochezia and severe anemia. She had been hospitalized many times over the past year for hematochezia of unknown etiology. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated ileal varices, which were fed by several ileal veins. These feeding veins were selectively embolized with N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) via a recanalized paraumbilical vein. The paraumbilical vein instead of the portal vein was punctured to decrease the risk of bleeding complications because she had coagulopathy and ascites. We consider antegrade e

Craniofacial venous vascular malformations cause severe cosmetic problems and yet these lesions are not candidates for transcatheter embolisation owing to the lack of arterial feeders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-operative embolisation of these lesions with N-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) via direct puncture. Between September 2003 and April 2006, 13 patients (7 female; age range, 6-64 years; mean, 16.7 years) were embolised with direct puncture and injection of NBCA. All of the patients were referred from plastic surgery with an operational plan. Angiogra

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gastric variceal bleeding is an infrequent but serious complication of portal hypertension. Endoscopic injection of Histoacryl (N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate) has been approved as an effective treatment for gastric variceal bleeding. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the endoscopic injection of Histoacryl for the treatment of gastric varices.
METHODS: Between January 1994 and January 2005, eighty-five patients with gastric varices received endoscopic injections of Histoacryl. Among these 85 patients, 65 received the procedure within 1 week a

We report on a case of recurrent variceal bleeding from gastric varices, which was treated with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and Histoacryl injection into the gastric varices. Furthermore, the patient had a small patent foramen ovale without a right-to-left shunt. After the intervention, the patient developed acute neurological disorders as a result of a cerebral paradoxical embolism. In the following, we describe the potential risk of histoacryl in paradoxical embolization when used for the injection of variceal collaterals during TIPS placement in patients with portal

PURPOSE: Transvenous embolization techniques may be helpful as alternatives to the arterial route when treating high-flow vascular malformations. We present our experience using these techniques in four patients.
METHODS: In one patient the venous portion of the arteriovenous malformation (AVM) was punctured directly; in the other three patients it was catheterized via a retrograde venous approach. Flow occlusion techniques were utilized in all patients during embolization, which was performed with absolute alcohol or N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate.
RESULTS: Excellent clinical and angiographic resu

Minor changes in the composition of poloxamer 188-modified, DEAE-dextran-stabilized (PDD) polybutylcyanoacrylate (PBCA) nanoparticles (NPs), by altering the physicochemical parameters (such as size or surface charge), can substantially influence their delivery kinetics across the blood-retina barrier (BRB) in vivo. We now investigated the physicochemical mechanisms underlying these different behaviors of NP variations at biological barriers and their influence on the cellular and body distribution. Retinal whole mounts from rats injected in vivo with fluorescent PBCA NPs were processed for ret

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms occuring worldwide. Although surgical resection still remains the treatment of choice for HCC, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has emerged as reliable alternatives to resection. It is less invasive and can be repeated after short intervals for sequential ablation in case of multiple lesions. The most common complication of RFA is liver abscess, and bile duct injury such as bile duct stricture has been reported. This is a case report of a rare complication of abscesso-colonic fistula after RFA for HCC. The case was treat

A 3-year-old boy presented to our hospital with progressive neurological deficits. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a perimedullary macro-arteriovenous fistula (PMAVF) resulting in a large venous pouch within the parenchyma of the lower cervical spinal cord. Transarterial varix embolization of the fistula from the venous side was performed using N-butyl cyanoacrylate with tantalum powder. Postembolization angiography confirmed obliteration of the fistula, and MRI revealed thrombosis and reduction in size of the venous component. The patient's clinical symptoms were reduced dram

A 27-year-old female with a type 2 hydatid cystic lesion in the liver according to the Gharbi classification (CE 3A according to the WHO classification) was referred for percutaneous treatment after albendazole treatment for 1 year. A catheterization technique was performed but hypertonic saline and alcohol were not given into the cavity due to cystobiliary leakage. During the 4-month follow-up period, sequential cavitography revealed biliary fistula, and bile-stained drainage had not been ceased despite the sphincterotomy, nasobiliary drainage catheter, and plastic stent. Since the patient re
