BACKGROUND: Progressive hemifacial atrophy or Parry-Romberg Syndrome (PRS) is a rare, acquired, progressive dysplasia of subcutaneous tissue and bone characterized by unilateral facial involvement. Its etiology is unknown, but theories about its pathogenesis include infectious, degenerative, autoimmune, and traumatic causes among others. The causal relationship of PRS and linear morphea en coup de sabre (LMCS) with Borrelia burgdorferi infection remains controversial. Our goal was to serologically determine anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies in patients diagnosed with PRS and LMCS to establish a p

Hemiparkinsonism-hemiatrophy (HPHA) is a rare neurological syndrome. The main clinical features of HPHA consist of atrophy of one side of the body (face, trunk, limbs), ipsilateral hemiparkinsonism (bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor) and in many cases dystonia. There are no data on prevalence of HPHA as the condition is rare. The mean age of parkinsonism onset is earlier than in idiopathic Parkinson disease (43.7 years, range: 15-63). Changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (cortical, basal ganglia atrophy contralaterally to the side of clinical presentation) are described in 30% of patients.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is an acquired facial deformity that manifests as progressive hemifacial atrophy that has unknown cause. Many surgical techniques to address it have been reported, such as fat transplantation and use of free flaps. Undoubtedly, the results of such techniques can be satisfactory for mild hemifacial atrophy after soft tissue restoration. But in severe cases, except for large-scale soft tissue atrophy, the osseous framework is involved, rendering their management difficult, and the results are often inadequate. On the basis of the severity of facial soft tissue atrophy and

Although its pathogenesis remains obscure, Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) has been associated with the linear scleroderma en coup de sabre. PRS is characterized by unilateral facial atrophy of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and bones with at least 1 dermatome supplied by the trigeminal nerve. Facial asymmetry represents the most common sequela and can involve the soft tissues, craniomaxillofacial skeleton, dentoalveolar area, and temporomandibular joint. Although orthognathic procedures have been reported for skeletal reconstruction, treatment of facial asymmetry has been directed to au

OBJECTIVE: Romberg disease is an uncommon condition manifested by progressive hemifacial atrophy of the skin, soft tissue, and bone. Facial asymmetry with soft tissue deficiency in Romberg disease causes a significant disability affecting the social life and can bring about many psychological problems.
METHODS: The aim of surgical treatment is cosmetic amelioration of the defect. Several conventional reconstructive procedures have been used for correcting facial asymmetry. They include fat injections, dermal fat grafts, filler injections, cartilage and bone grafts, and pedicled and free flaps

BACKGROUND: Anterolateral thigh adipofascial free flap transfer is a frequently used method to reconstruct facial symmetry and restore facial soft-tissue contour in patients with Parry-Romberg syndrome, but long-term prognosis and outcomes are unclear.
METHOD: The authors report their treatment experience with 42 patients between 2001 and 2017 using microsurgical free anterolateral thigh adipofascial flap transfer. Long-term follow-up results and final reconstructive outcomes were evaluated.
RESULTS: A total of 42 patients were included. The follow-up ranged from 5 to 21 years. All patients

BACKGROUND: Autologous fat grafting (AFG) has been widely used to treat progressive hemifacial atrophy (PHA). However, objective and quantitative analyses in patients with PHA are complicated because of multidimensional atrophy and fat absorption. This study aimed to introduce a new method to predict volumetric deficiency of soft tissues and objectively evaluate the survival of grafted fat with 3-dimensional (3D) and mirror-image analysis (MIA).
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with PHA were classified into 2 groups based on the location of the facial midsagittal plane (FMP), which was establishe

INTRODUCTION: This cases report confirms the hypothesis that embryonic and maxillofacial growth are influenced by the peripheral nervous system, including the trigeminal nerve (V). So, it's interesting to use the stigma of the trigeminal nerve as landmarks to analyze the maxillofacial volume and understand its growth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity of the three-dimensional cephalometric analysis of Treil based on trigeminal landmarks.

BACKGROUND: Morphea (circumcripted cutaneous scleroderma) can be difficult to assess for lesion activity. Because variable-frequency ultrasound with color Doppler provides details of skin morphology and function, it may help in the categorization of morphea.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate color Doppler ultrasound as a probing tool for assessing activity in morphea lesions.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with cutaneous morphea referred by dermatologists were studied with color Doppler ultrasound, and the assessment of lesion activity was compared with histologic findings. Normal skin control

PURPOSE: The benefits of minimally invasive surgery have been well documented. The purpose of this report was to present early results in a series of patients who had endoscopic mandibular orthognathic surgery. Patients and methods This is a retrospective evaluation of 14 patients who underwent endoscopic vertical ramus osteotomy and rigid fixation for the treatment of mandibular prognathism (n = 9), malocclusion secondary to trauma (n = 3), or other pathology (n = 2). A 1.5-cm incision was made directly below the mandibular angle. The dissection was continued bluntly to the masseter muscle, w

Use of the free groin flap, one of the first microvascular free flaps described, has been neglected recently because it has a short pedicle and varies anatomically. However, we have found its anatomical features and type of tissue ideal for volumetric enhancement in severe hemifacial asymmetry. We present a retrospective review of a consecutive series of 14 patients who had hemifacial augmentation with a free groin flap (mean age at operation 17 years, range 10-42) since 2001, and discuss the surgical technique. The most common cause of asymmetry was hemifacial microsomia (n=6). Anatomical var

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) is a relatively rare disease. The etiology of the disease is not clear. Some authors postulate its relation with limited scleroderma linearis. Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" is characterized by clinical presence of most commonly one-sided linear syndrome. In a number of patients, neurological affection is the medium of the disease. The treatment of both scleroderma varieties is similar to the treatment of limited systemic sclerosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of a disease: a case of a 49-year-old woman with a typical

Linear scleroderma (LS) is characterized by scleroatrophic lesions affecting limbs and legs, unilaterally. Neurological involvement may be associated with ipsilateral facial and skull involvement in disorders referred to clinically as LS 'en coup de sabre', and Parry-Romberg syndrome. We report a child with LS presenting with a severe neurological disorder characterized by epilepsy, progressive mental deterioration and a rapid process of atrophy involving the ipsilateral cerebral hemisphere, but not associated with an overlying facial structure involvement. Functional brain studies showed a re

Progressive hemifacial atrophy is a rare disorder characterized by an acquired, idiopathic, self-limited, unilateral facial atrophy involving skin, subcutaneous tissue, fat, muscle, and bone. Symmetry and contour restoration are the main treatment challenges. Among many techniques, microvascular reconstruction has been introduced as the gold standard to correct the atrophic deformity. For some patients with severe manifestations, soft tissue reconstruction alone does not obtain the desired outcome. In this series, we used an effective method to restore the severe progressive hemifacial atrophy
