[Blood flow changes of cauda equina in experimental lumbar spinal canal stenosis under dynamic burden].

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes of blood flow of the already-compressed cauda equina under dynamic burden, high frequency stimulation (HFS) and increased additional compression, and to clarify the mechanism of neurogenic intermittent claudication. METHODS: Thirty SD rats were divided into 5 groups, 6 in each. All groups were operated with laminectomy of the fifth lumbar verfebra. One hour after the measurement of blood flow, in 4 experimental groups, the silicon sheets were inserted into the spinal canal of L4 and L6 to cause double level compression of cauda equina by 30%. Two hours after on

Decreased circulating levels of estrogen alter vaginal and clitoral blood flow and structure in the rabbit.

Aging and menopause related decline in circulating levels of estrogen has been shown to adversely affect female sexual arousal function. Our aim was to study the effects of circulating levels of estrogen on the hemodynamic mechanism of vaginal and clitoral engorgement and on the structure of the vaginal and clitoral cavernosal tissue in the rabbit. New Zealand White female rabbits (3.5-4 kg) were randomly divided into three groups with five rabbits in each group: control; bilateral oophorectomy; bilateral oophorectomy undergoing subcutaneous injection of estrogen (40 microg/kg/day). After 6 we

Description of the ventriculoarterial interaction dynamics using recurrence plot strategies.

OBJECTIVE: The classical description of ventriculoarterial coupling by calculating the ratio between the effective arterial elastance Ea to the end-systolic elastance Ees does not give insight into the underlying dynamics of the interaction between left-ventricular pressure (LVP) and aortic pressure (AOP) and flow (AOF). The aim of this study was to introduce a state space representation for the ventriculoarterial coupling and to quantify changes of the coupling state. METHODS: A ventriculoarterial state space orbit VAO was defined to be dependent on three variables: VAO = [LVP(t), AOP(t + de

Increased contribution of KCa channels to muscle contraction induced vascular and blood flow responses in sedentary and exercise trained ZFDM rats.

In resistance arteries, endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization (EDH)-mediated vasodilatation is depressed in diabetes. We hypothesized that downregulation of KCa channel derived EDH reduces exercise-induced vasodilatation and blood flow redistribution in diabetes. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated vascular function in response to hindlimb muscle contraction, and the contribution of KCa channels in anaesthetised ZFDM, metabolic disease rats with type 2 diabetes. We also tested whether exercise training ameliorated the vascular response. Using in vivo microangiography, the hindlimb vasculat

Combined NRB and Nasal Cannula Oxygen Delivery Is Inferior to Flush Rate NRB for Emergency Preoxygenation.

OBJECTIVES: Although preoxygenation with a non-rebreather (NRB) mask at flush rate (≥ 50 L/min) is an effective and straightforward technique, it is not always feasible in situations where airway management must be performed away from the ambulance, when only portable oxygen tanks are available. To achieve a combined total flow of ≥50 L/min, some experts have advocated the use of a NRB mask in combination with a nasal cannula, both at 25 L/min. This technique has not been compared to preoxygenation using flush rate oxygen. This study sought to determine whether preoxygenation using both a NRB

Plasma resuscitation with adjunctive peritoneal resuscitation reduces ischemic intestinal injury following hemorrhagic shock.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired intestinal microvascular perfusion following resuscitated hemorrhagic shock (HS) leads to ischemia-reperfusion injury, microvascular dysfunction, and intestinal epithelial injury, which contribute to the development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in some trauma patients. Restoration of central hemodynamics with traditional methods alone often fails to fully restore microvascular perfusion and does not protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury. We hypothesized that resuscitation (RES) with fresh frozen plasma (FFP) alone or combined with direct peritoneal resusc

Important roles of endothelial caveolin-1 in endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization and ischemic angiogenesis in mice.

Although increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, the importance of physiological ROS has also been emerging. We have previously demonstrated that endothelium-derived H2O2 is an endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization (EDH) factor and that loss of endothelial caveolin-1 reduces EDH/H2O2 in the microcirculation. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is a scaffolding/regulatory protein that interacts with diverse signaling pathways, including angiogenesis. However, it remains unclear whether endothelial Cav-1 plays a role in ischemic angiogenesi

Noninvasive optical characterization of muscle blood flow, oxygenation, and metabolism in women with fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Women with fibromyalgia (FM) have symptoms of increased muscular fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance, which may be associated with alterations in muscle microcirculation and oxygen metabolism. This study used near-infrared diffuse optical spectroscopies to noninvasively evaluate muscle blood flow, blood oxygenation and oxygen metabolism during leg fatiguing exercise and during arm arterial cuff occlusion in post-menopausal women with and without FM. METHODS: Fourteen women with FM and twenty-three well-matched healthy controls participated in this study. For the fatiguing exe

Cutaneous Mechanical Stimulation Regulates Ovarian Blood Flow via Activation of Spinal and Supraspinal Reflex Pathways in Anesthetized Rats.

The reflex effects of noxious mechanical stimulation of a hindpaw or abdominal skin on ovarian blood flow, and the reflex pathways involved in those responses were examined in anesthetized rats. Blood flow in the left ovary was measured using a laser Doppler flowmeter, and the activity of the left ovarian sympathetic nerve and mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the common carotid artery were recorded. Stimulation of the left or right hindpaw for 30 s produced marked increases in ovarian sympathetic nerve activity and MAP. Ovarian blood flow slightly decreased during the stimulation and then sligh

Fractionated illumination for oesophageal ALA-PDT: effect on blood flow and PpIX formation.

The effect of fractionating the 633 nm illumination of 5-aminolaevulinic (ALA)-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) of the normal rat oesophagus was studied. Fractionation of the illumination could enhance the PDT effect in two ways: (a) delay of the vascular shutdown or relaxation of the vasoconstriction induced by ALA-PDT and (b) use of newly formed protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), produced during the dark interval. Forty rats were randomly allocated to two groups of 20 animals each. To study vascular effects, in group 1 illumination with 633 nm (100 mW/cm) was performed at 3 h after oral ALA administr

Evaluation of mitral regurgitation using a digitally determined color Doppler flow convergence 'centerline' acceleration method. Studies in an animal model with quantified mitral regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: The imaging and measurement of the proximal flow convergence region in the left ventricle have been reported to be useful for identifying the site of mitral regurgitation (MR) and for evaluating its severity. However, the application of this method has not gained general acceptance. There have been few in vivo studies with quantified reference standards for determining regurgitant volume, and those that have been reported used spectral Doppler standards and/or nonsimultaneously performed contrast ventriculography. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the proximal flow c

Effect of topical dorzolamide on optic nerve head blood flow.

PURPOSE: The topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor dorzolamide has proven effective in lowering intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients. Because an impaired blood supply of the optic nerve has to be regarded as a major pathogenic risk factor it seems important to examine the effect of this new antiglaucomatous drug on capillary optic nerve head blood flow. METHODS: In a double-masked, randomized clinical trial, dorzolamide eye drops were applied to both eyes of 15 healthy subjects (8 female, 7 male, mean age 30.6 years) three times daily for 3 days. The control group (15 healthy volunteers,
