Relationship between bone fluoride content and histological evidence of calcification defects in osteoporotic women treated long term with sodium fluoride.

Fluoride treatment is used to increase bone formation and cancellous bone mass in patients suffering from postmenopausal osteoporosis with vertebral fractures. Patients submitted to similar therapeutic protocols have shown various histological responses to the treatment, some developing calcification defects and others not. In fact, the bone histological response to fluoride salts depends on the cumulative uptake of fluoride by bone. To clarify the relationship between the presence of calcification defects (identified by the presence of mottled bone and linear formation defects) and the bone f

Effect of a two-solution fluoride mouth rinse on deposition of loosely bound fluoride on sound root tissue and remineralization of root lesions in vitro.

A constant-composition fluoride (F) titration method was used to measure the amount of leachable F deposited on root surfaces in vitro by a 1-min rinse with a 12 mmol/l sodium fluoride (228 micrograms/g F) solution or a two-solution rinse that contained 2 mmol/l sodium fluorosilicate (228 micrograms/g total F ) and 10 mmol/l calcium chloride. The mean +/- standard deviations (n = 3) F uptake from the two rinse treatments were 0.70 +/- 0.24 micrograms/cm2 and 3.25 +/- 0.74 micrograms/cm2, respectively. In a separate experiment, the effects of sodium fluoride and the two-solution rinses on remin

Evaluation of Fluoride and Silver Ion Concentrations in e-Silver Diamine Fluoride and Advantage Arrest: An Ion Chromatography and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is characterized by sharp shooting pain due to exposed dentin, and the most common method for treating this pain is the occlusion of the dentinal tubules with the help of desensitizing agents. E-silver diamine fluoride (e-SDF) (Kids-e-Dental, Mumbai, India) is a commercially available 38% SDF solution in the Indian market. Despite the fact that its application for caries prevention has been proven, the fluoride (Fl) and silver (Ag) ion concentrations of e-SDF for use in treating DH have yet to be standardized. The aim of this study is to determ

Change of urinary fluoride and bone metabolism indicators in the endemic fluorosis areas of southern China after supplying low fluoride public water.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated health impacts, especially biomarker changes, following implementation of a new environmental policy. This study examined changes in water fluoride, urinary fluoride (UF), and bone metabolism indicators in children after supplying low fluoride public water in endemic fluorosis areas of Southern China. We also assessed the relationship between UF and serum osteocalcin (BGP), calcitonin (CT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bone mineral density to identify the most sensitive bone metabolism indicators related to fluoride exposure. METHODS: Four fluorosis-e

A scanning electron microscope investigation of calcium fluoride-like material deposited during topical fluoride exposure on sound human enamel in vitro.

1. The morphological aspects of globules deposited in vitro when a NaF solution is applied to sound human enamel were studied by scanning electron microscopy. 2. Particles, presumably of calcium fluoride-like material, formed on the surfaces of an unerupted tooth and consisted of subunits showing a "cauliflower" appearance, indicating agglomeration of even smaller particles. The number and size of the crystals increased with time of exposure. 3. These particles represent highly resistant fluoride reservoirs and may be of clinical significance.

Attainment of therapeutic fluoride levels in serum without major side effects using a slow-release preparation of sodium fluoride in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The bioavailability, biochemical effects, and safety of a slow-release preparation of sodium fluoride were examined. In 8 normal volunteers, a single administration of slow-release sodium fluoride (25 mg) caused a slow rise and gradual decline in serum fluoride concentration, thus avoiding sharp peaks produced by a rapid-release preparation. In 37 patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis, serum fluoride concentration was kept within the "therapeutic window" (95-100 ng/ml) during long-term intermittent sodium fluoride (slow-release) therapy (25 mg twice/day, given for 3 months in each 5-month

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 28. Effects of high and low water fluoridation on orthodontic root resorption: A microcomputed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Transient inflammatory surface resorption, referred to as orthodontic induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), is an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Systemic fluoride has been associated with a reduction of OIIRR. This study aimed to investigate the effects of water fluoridation levels on OIIRR in a clinically applicable human orthodontic model. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who required bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction as part of orthodontic treatment were selected from 2 cities with high and low water fluoridation of ≥2 ppm and ≤0.05 pp…

Visible-Light Photocatalytic Functionalization of Aryl Chlorides and Fluorides.

Aryl chlorides and fluorides are inexpensive and readily available feedstocks; however, the high bond dissociation energies and low polarizability of CAr─X (Cl, F) bonds have long posed significant challenges to classical thermal activation, which is often harsh and poorly compatible with functional groups. Visible-light photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful strategy that overcomes these limitations by leveraging single-electron transfer to highly reactive radical intermediates under mild conditions. This review provides a mechanistically guided overview of recent advances in photocatalytic

Enzymatic PFAS destruction coupled with lanthanum fluoride recovery.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) must be treated in large volumes to reach nanogram-per-litre regulatory limits, yet destructive technologies remain confined to the laboratory, while separation methods only concentrate the problem into hazardous waste. This study integrates three functions, enzymatic C-F bond cleavage, fluoride capture by Lewis-acidic metal-organic frameworks, and capacitive electro-swing regeneration, into a single hierarchical architecture that acts as a continuous PFAS-to-fluoride converter. Trametes versicolor laccase and its ABTS mediator are co-immobilised with

Effects of the fluorination degree in alcohols on the interaction with fluoride ions.

Taming F- with a hydrogen bond donor such as alcohols can moderate its high basicity and hardness, enabling its use in some chemical and electrochemical reactions. Previous works discussed the strong interactions between fluorinated alcohols and F- using a variety of analytical methods. In this study, non-fluorinated and fluorinated alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol, and tert-butanol and their fluorinated forms) are systematically investigated to elucidate the effects of the fluorination degree in alcohols on the interaction with F-. Quantum mechanical calculations revealed that fluorinated alcoh

Fluoride and Cardiovascular Diseases: Epidemiologic Investigations and Mechanistic Insights.

Fluorine is a trace element that is beneficial to human health. However, long-term and excessive fluoride exposure can damage bone and teeth, as well as the cardiovascular, nervous, and reproductive systems, etc. Since 2001, a growing body of evidences suggests that excessive fluoride exposure is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Although some original studies have focused on this topic, general and narrative reviews are rare. This article summarizes the effects of fluoride on blood pressure/hypertension, vascular sclerosis (mainly atherosclerosis), and myocardial/ cardiac damages based
