The Latin American trial of psychosocial support during pregnancy: effects on mother's wellbeing and satisfaction. Latin American Network For Perinatal and Reproductive Research (LANPER).

A randomized controlled trial including 2235 women at high risk of low birthweight was conducted in four Latin American institutions. The objective of this trial was to evaluate a psychosocial support intervention during pregnancy aimed at improving perinatal health and mothers' psychosocial conditions. The core of the intervention was four to six home visits where emotional support, counseling and strengthening of the woman's social network was provided. Outcomes were measured at 36 weeks of pregnancy, post-partum and 40 days after delivery. The intervention was not successful in either alter

Integrated bite case management within a One Health framework for rabies elimination at the primary care level in Kerala, India: an implementation research protocol using a stepped-wedge cluster randomised design.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies remains a persistent public health threat in India, while gaps in surveillance and coordination of control measures undermine progress towards ending human rabies deaths. The WHO advocates a One Health approach, combining mass dog vaccination, postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) and Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM). IBCM is not yet incorporated into India's national rabies action plan for rabies elimination. This study seeks to generate robust evidence on the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, feasibility, facilitators and barriers of IBCM implemented within Kerala's Rabi

Innovative approaches to support smoking cessation for individuals with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders.

Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of death in the US, accounting for over 520,000 deaths annually. While the smoking prevalence has declined over the past 50 years, those with mental illness and addictive disorders continue to smoke at high levels and with significant tobacco-related health problems. Areas covered: This review highlights the epidemiology, contributing factors, and evidence-base for intervening upon tobacco use in those with mental illness and addictive disorders. Historically underprioritized, a growing body of literature supports treating tobacco within mental hea

Malaria Surveillance - United States, 2015.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles species mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to regions with ongoing malaria transmission. However, malaria is occasionally acquired by persons who have not traveled out of the country through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, laboratory exposure, or local mosquitoborne transmission. Protocol for the Proactive Or Reactive Telephone Smoking CeSsation Support (PORTSSS) trial.

BACKGROUND: Telephone quit lines are accessible to many smokers and are used to engage motivated smokers to make quit attempts. Smoking cessation counselling provided via telephone can either be reactive (i.e. primarily involving the provision of evidence-based information), or proactive (i.e. primarily involving repeated, sequenced calls from and interaction with trained cessation counsellors). Some studies have found proactive telephone counselling more effective and this trial will investigate whether or not proactive telephone support for smoking cessation, delivered through the National H

Effectiveness of smoking-cessation interventions for urban hospital patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization may be a particularly important time to promote smoking cessation, especially in the immediate post-discharge period. However, there are few studies to date that shed light on the most effective or cost-effective methods to provide post-discharge cessation treatment, especially among low-income populations and those with a heavy burden of mental illness and substance use disorders. METHODS/DESIGN: This randomized trial will compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of two approaches to smoking cessation treatment among patients discharged from two urban publ

Current CDC efforts to prevent and control human immunodeficiency virus infection and AIDS in the United States through information and education.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is estimated to have infected more than a million people in the United States and millions more in other countries. Even though there is no vaccine or effective treatment, HIV infection can be prevented through behavioral change. As the lead Public Health Service Agency for disease prevention, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has designed and implemented information and education activities with the ultimate goal of preventing HIV infection and AIDS in the United States. The target populations include the general public, school- and college-aged popu

Cessation Outcomes Among Quitline Callers in Three States During a National Tobacco Education Campaign.

INTRODUCTION: Antismoking mass media campaigns, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Tips from Former Smokers (Tips) campaign, increase the number of tobacco users calling tobacco quitlines. Few studies have investigated long-term tobacco use cessation for callers during antismoking media campaigns. Studies have suggested that callers during campaigns may be less committed to quitting and have lower quit rates. This study examines tobacco user cessation outcomes 7 months after quitline enrollment during the 2012 Tips campaign (March 19 through June 10, 2012). METHODS: We a
