Arsenic (As) is a widespread metalloid and human carcinogen found in the natural environment, and multiple toxic effects have been shown to be associated with As exposure. As can be accumulated in the spleen, the largest peripheral lymphatic organ, and long-term exposure to As can lead to splenic injury. In this study, a Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat model of As-poisoned was established, aiming to explore the molecular mechanism of As-induced immune injury through the combined analysis of proteomics and metabolomics of rats' spleen. After feeding the rats with As diet (50 mg/kg) for 90 days, the spl

Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) affect the geochemical cycling of redox-sensitive pollutants in anaerobic environments by controlling the transformation of Fe morphology. The anaerobic oxidation of antimonite (Sb(III)) driven by DIRB and Fe(III) oxyhydroxides interactions has been previously reported. However, the oxidative species and mechanisms involved remain unclear. In this study, both biotic phenomenon and abiotic verification experiments were conducted to explore the formed oxidative intermediates and related processes that lead to anaerobic Sb(III) oxidation accompanied dur

Arsenic (As) is a highly toxic metalloid. Carvacrol (CAR) is the active ingredient of Lamiaceae plants and has various biological and pharmacological properties. The present study investigated the protective effects of carvacrol (CAR) against testicular toxicity induced by sodium arsenite (SA). Rats were given SA (10 mg/kg) and/or CAR (25 or 50 mg/kg) for 14 days. Semen analyzes showed that CAR increased sperm motility and decreased the percentage of abnormal and dead sperm. It was determined that the oxidative stress induced by SA decreased with the increase of Nrf-2 and HO-1 expressions, SOD

Dittrichia viscosa uptake and translocation of the metalloid As is not fully understood and some data are contradictory, but its adaptability to this pollutant is known and is dependent on its genetic variability. D. viscosa is not a hyperaccumulator plant, but it can grow in high-drought conditions while still producing large biomass, even tolerating significant concentrations of As3+ and As5+. In spite of these remarkable characteristics, adaptive modification of performances is not predictable in wild populations. In previous work, we established experimental clonal populations to perform a

Arsenic is a metalloid with carcinogenic properties and has been classified as a Category I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Freeze-thaw processes affect the migration and transformation of soil heavy metals, as well as adsorption/desorption and redox reactions. However, there is limited research directly addressing the impact of freeze-thaw processes on the bioavailability of soil heavy metals. In this study, we focused on As and selected As-contaminated soil samples from three types of legacy sites in heavy industrial areas. Under controlled freeze-thaw e

Biochar (BC) and humic acid (HA) are well-documented in metal/metalloid detoxification, but their regulatory role in conferring plant oxidative stress under arsenic (As) stress is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed at investigating the role of BC and HA (0.2 and 0.4 g kg-1 soil) in the detoxification of As (0.25 mM sodium arsenate) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan75). Arsenic exhibited an increased lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and proline content which were 32, 30, 9, and 89% higher compared to control. In addition, the antioxidant defense syst

Arsenic is a widespread natural metalloid element. Long-term chronic exposure to arsenic can lead to different degrees of liver injury. Although the etiology of this disease is well known, to date, the underlying mechanism of arsenic-induced liver injury remains unclear, and no specific treatment exists because of the complexity of arsenic. In the present study, potential biomarkers and metabolic pathways in the livers of Wistar rats treated with arsenic for 24 weeks were investigated using an integrated metabolic approach with an LC-Orbitrap Q Exactive™ HF-X mass spectrometer. Markedly increa

Human metallothioneins are a superfamily of low molecular weight intracellular proteins, whose synthesis can be induced by essential elements (primarily Zn and Cu), toxic elements and chemical agents, and stress-producing conditions. Of the four known isoforms in the human body MT2 is the most common. The expression of metallothioneins is encoded by a multigene family of linked genes and can be influenced by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes. To date, 24 SNPs in the MT2A gene have been identified with the incidence of about 1 % in various population groups, and three of the

Arsenic is a proven human carcinogen and is associated with a myriad of other adverse health effects. This metalloid is methylated in human liver to monomethylarsonic acid (MMA(V)), monomethylarsonous acid (MMA(III)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA(V)), and dimethylarsinous acid (DMA(III)) and eliminated predominantly in urine. Hepatic basolateral transport of arsenic species is ultimately critical for urinary elimination; however, these pathways are not fully elucidated in humans. A potentially important human hepatic basolateral transporter is the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter multidrug

Although it is widely known that arsenic-contaminated drinking water causes many diseases, arsenic's exact mode of action (MOA) is not fully understood. Induction of oxidative stress has been proposed as an important key event in the toxic MOA of arsenic. The authors' studies are centered on identifying a reactive species involved in the genotoxicity of arsenic using a catalase (CAT) knockout mouse model that is impaired in its ability to breakdown hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). The authors assessed the induction of DNA damage using the Comet assay following exposure of mouse Cat(+/) (+) and Cat(

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid element that is present in air, water and soil. Inorganic arsenic tends to be more toxic than organic arsenic. Examples of methylated organic arsenicals include monomethylarsonic acid [MMA(V)] and dimethylarsinic acid [DMA(V)]. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage is a common denominator in arsenic pathogenesis. In addition, arsenic induces morphological changes in the integrity of mitochondria. Cascade mechanisms of free radical formation derived from the superoxide radical, combined with glutathione-depleting agents, increase the sensitivi

Studies in model organisms have identified regulatory processes that profoundly influence aging, many of which modulate resistance against environmental or metabolic stresses. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the transcription regulator SKN-1 is important for oxidative stress resistance and acts in multiple longevity pathways. SKN-1 is the ortholog of mammalian Nrf proteins, which induce Phase 2 detoxification genes in response to stress. Phase 2 enzymes defend against oxygen radicals and conjugate electrophiles that are produced by Phase 1 detoxification enzymes, which metabolize lipophilic compoun

Selenium (Se) is a metalloid with chemical properties closed to those of sulfur, but they can not substitute for one another in vivo. Se body content reflected soil Se content (13 to 20 mg in North Americans, 3 to 6 in New Zealand residents). The daily intake recommended is 50 to 200 micrograms. In the diet Se occurs in mineral or organic forms, the bioavailability of these latter is better. Se as selenocysteine is incorporated in specific proteins such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Se is metabolized in H2Se by reductive pathways. H2Se is methylated and methylated compounds are excreted

Metals and metalloids (collectively referred to as metal(loid)s) have been implicated in glucose dysregulation, yet interpreting such associations remains challenging because multiple metal(loid)s coexist within complex biological elemental profiles. Whole-blood metallome profiling characterizes the integrated elemental composition of blood, including toxic trace elements, essential trace elements as well as physiologically regulated macroelements. However, most mixture studies have focused on trace or toxic metal(loid)s, while macroelements have been less commonly incorporated into metal(loid

There is a paucity of research examining the impact of environmental chemical (EC) mixtures on sleep and the role of body mass index (BMI) in this association. We prospectively evaluated 1) the association between EC exposure (bio)marker-mixtures during peri-pregnancy and sleep outcomes after pregnancy, and 2) mediation by BMI. We studied ∼393 mothers from the PROGRESS cohort with 52 EC (bio)markers measured during pregnancy (estimated air pollutants, blood/urinary metal(loid)s, urinary high- and low-molecular-weight phthalate [HMWP, LMWP] and pesticide metabolites) and 1-month postpartum (ser

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomata (UL), hormone-dependent neoplasms, are a major source of gynecologic morbidity. Metals are hypothesized to influence UL risk through endocrine disruption, and their effects may vary by vitamin D status.
OBJECTIVE: We estimated associations of a metal mixture with incident UL, overall and by vitamin D status.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle and Fibroids, a Detroit-area prospective cohort study of 1,693 black women 23-35 years of age. We measured concentrations of 17 metals/metalloids in whole blood and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(

Dopants and alloying elements are commonly introduced in amorphous carbon (a-C) materials to tailor their mechanical and tribological properties. While most published studies have focused on doping and alloying a-C coatings with metals or metalloids, doping a-C films with rare-earth elements has only recently been explored. Notably, our understanding of the shear-induced structural changes occurring in rare-earth-element-containing a-C films is still elusive, even in the absence of any liquid lubricants. Here, the friction response of Eu- and Gd-containing a-C films with low hydrogen content d

Nanotechnology has become a very advanced and popular form of technology with huge potentials. Nanotechnology has been very well explored in the fields of electronics, automobiles, construction, medicine, and cosmetics, but the exploration of nanotecnology's use in agriculture is still limited. Due to climate change, each year around 40% of crops face abiotic and biotic stress; with the global demand for food increasing, nanotechnology is seen as the best method to mitigate challenges in disease management in crops by reducing the use of chemical inputs such as herbicides, pesticides, and fung

Lead (Pb) is a worldwide environmental contaminant that even at low levels influences brain development and affects neurobehavior later in life; nevertheless it is only a small fraction of the neurotoxicant (NT) exposome. Exposure to environmental Pb concurrent with other NT substances is often the norm, but their joint effects are challenging to study during early life. The aim of this review is to integrate studies of Pb-containing NT mixtures during the early life and neurodevelopment outcomes of children. The Pb-containing NT mixtures that have been most studied involve other metals (Mn, A

Underground mine drainages are extremely difficult to study due to the lack of information about the flow path and source proximity in relation to the outflow adit. Geochemical processes controlling metals and acidity fluxes in a complex anthropogenic mine aquifer in SW Spain during the dry and rainy season were investigated by geochemical and statistical tools. High concentrations of acidity, sulfate, metals and metalloids (e.g. Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Ni, Co) were observed due to intense sulfide oxidation processes. The high residence time inside the anthropogenic aquifer, around 40days, caused
