Mouse Extraocular Muscles and the Musculotopic Organization of Their Innervation.

The organization of extraocular muscles (EOMs) and their motor nuclei was investigated in the mouse due to the increased importance of this model for oculomotor research. Mice showed a standard EOM organization pattern, although their eyes are set at the side of the head. They do have more prominent oblique muscles, whose insertion points differ from those of frontal-eyed species. Retrograde tracers revealed that the motoneuron layout aligns with the general vertebrate plan with respect to nuclei and laterality. The mouse departed in some significant respects from previously studied species. F

Atrophy of Diaphragm and Pectoral Muscles in Critically Ill Patients.

WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC: Muscle atrophy is common in the critically ill, and diaphragm atrophy occurs during mechanical ventilation. It is not known whether wasting of diaphragm and nondiaphragm muscle is related. WHAT THIS ARTICLE TELLS US THAT IS NEW: Ultrasound was used for serial assessment of diaphragm and pectoral muscle in 97 critically ill patients. Diaphragm and pectoral atrophy occurred in 48% and 29%, respectively, and was associated with septic shock (diaphragm) and steroid use (pectoral); atrophy of the two muscle types appears unrelated. BACKGROUND: Muscle atrophy

Selective Fatty Replacement of Paraspinal Muscles in Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

A 65-year-old man with a history of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy presented to his physician with a complaint of new-onset low back pain, bilateral foot numbness, and left lower extremity radicular symptoms with foot drop. He subsequently underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine, which revealed complete fatty replacement of the erector spinae musculature throughout the lumbar spine. Preservation of the lumbar multifidus muscles above the L4 level was observed, which has not previously been reported in patients with this condition. The patient's lower extremity symptoms

Modulation of iris sphincter and ciliary muscles by urocortin 2.

Urocortin 2 (UCN2) is a peptide related to corticotropin-releasing factor, capable of activating CRF-R2. Among its multisystemic effects, it has actions in all 3 muscle subtypes. This study's aim was to determine its potential role in two of the intrinsic eye muscle kinetics. Strips of iris sphincter (rabbit) and ciliary (bovine) muscles were dissected and mounted in isometric force-transducer systems filled with aerated-solutions. Contraction was elicited using carbachol (10(-6) M for iris sphincter, 10(-5) M for ciliary muscle), prior adding to all testing substances. UCN2 induced relaxation

Muscle contractility of leg muscles in patients with mitochondrial myopathies.

BACKGROUND: The primary disease mechanism underlying mitochondrial myopathies (MM) is impaired energy generation to support muscle endurance. Little is known about muscle contractility before energy becomes deficient during muscle contractions. We investigated muscle contractility in MM to uncover potentially fixed weakness aspects of the disorders. METHODS: Contractility of calf and thigh muscles was investigated by comparing strength with contractile cross-sectional area (CCSA) of the used muscles, as measured by stationary dynamometry and MRI, respectively. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Our fin

Correction of Malocclusion by Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection into Masticatory Muscles.

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxin, and its injection in masticatory muscles induces muscle weakness and paralysis. This paralytic effect of BTX induces growth retardation of the maxillofacial bones, changes in dental eruption and occlusion state, and facial asymmetry. Using masticatory muscle paralysis and its effect via BTX, BTX can be used for the correction of malocclusion after orthognathic surgery and mandible fracture. The paralysis of specific masticatory muscles by BTX injection reduces the tensional force to the mandible and prevents relapse and changes in dental occlusion. BTX in

Structural changes in the thigh muscles following trans-femoral amputation.

INTRODUCTION: Early ambulation is the principal objective in trans-femoral amputees. Postamputation modifications complicate the rehabilitation process due to a reduced control at the interface between stump and prosthesis. The aim of this study is to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging depicts the amount of fatty degeneration of the thigh muscles after trans-femoral amputation (TFA). METHODS: A total of 12 patients following a TFA on the basis of a bone neoplasm or metastasis with an evaluable postoperative MRI were identified. Using the Goutallier classification, the fatty degenera

Passive material properties of stroke-impaired plantarflexor and dorsiflexor muscles.

BACKGROUND: Following a stroke, intrinsic muscle properties such as stiffness may be altered, which is accompanied by increased spasticity and contractures. Previously, quantification of muscle stiffness has been based off of indirect measurements. Using shear wave ultrasound elastography, direct measurements of muscle material properties can be made. METHODS: Our aim was to evaluate material properties, specifically passive stiffness, using shear wave ultrasound elastography across a range of muscle lengths, in the medial gastrocnemius and the tibialis anterior in chronic stroke survivors.

Ruptured Papillary Muscles After Chordae-Preserving Bioprosthetic Mitral Valve Replacement.

Bioprosthetic valve-associated masses in the perioperative period are rare. This report describes the case of a 68-year-old man with perivalvular masses that were initially discovered on a routine postoperative transthoracic echocardiogram 7 days after chordae-preserving mitral valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting. An intraoperative transesophageal echocardiogram demonstrated ruptured papillary muscles. This case report describes the differential diagnosis and surgical management of this rare finding.

Major involvement of trunk muscles in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

OBJECTIVES: The motor impairments in Myotonic Dystrophy 1 (DM1) are assumed to progress from distal toward proximal parts of the extremities in the Juvenile and Adult forms of DM1. On occasion and late in progress spine deformity is observed. In this study we have examined whether and to what extent trunk muscles are impaired in DM1, and if this impairment is correlated with the duration of the disorder, walking capacity, mobility, balance, and CTG-repeats. MATERIALS & METHODS: Manual muscle testing (MMT) of skeletal muscle strength in trunk and extremities, reassessment of the mutation size,

Laterality of proprioception in the orofacial muscles and temporomandibular joint.

Laterality of function in the orofacial musculature suggests there may be side-to-side asymmetry of proprioceptive acuity in lip movement compared to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In the present work, 14 young adults were tested for acuity of lip and TMJ closure movements onto plugs varying from 5 to 8mm without visual feedback. Testing was conducted on both left and right sides, using the same psychophysical task and stimuli. Results showed superior proprioceptive acuity at the lips, with no significant side effect. However, there was side-to-side asymmetry in the correlations between pr

Role of muscles in the stabilization of ligament-deficient wrists.

This article reviews the results of a series of cadaver investigations aimed at clarifying the role of muscles in the stabilization of ligament-deficient wrists. According to these studies, isometric contraction of some forearm muscles induces midcarpal (MC) supination (ie, the abductor pollicis longus, extensor carpi radialis longus, and flexor carpi ulnaris), whereas other muscles induce MC pronation (ie, the extensor carpi ulnaris). Because MC supination implies tightening of the volar scaphoid-distal row ligaments, the MC supination muscles are likely to prevent scaphoid collapse of wrists

Paraspinal muscles density: a marker for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis?

BACKGROUND: The condition of paraspinal muscles is known to be associated with some variables such as age, gender, and low back pain. It is generally agreed that these muscles play an important role in the stability and functional movements of the lumbar vertebral column. Although spinal instability has been shown to play an essential role in degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS), the role of paraspinal muscles remains elusive. The main purpose of this study was to shed light on the relationship between the condition of paraspinal muscles and symptomatic DLSS. METHODS: Two sample populat

Characterization of excitation-contraction coupling components in human extraocular muscles.

Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the physiological mechanism whereby an electrical signal detected by the dihydropyridine receptor, is converted into an increase in [Ca2+], via activation of ryanodine receptors (RyRs). Mutations in RYR1, the gene encoding RyR1, are the underlying cause of various congenital myopathies including central core disease, multiminicore disease (MmD), some forms of centronuclear myopathy (CNM) and congenital fibre-type disproportion. Interestingly, patients with recessive, but not dominant, RYR1 mutations show a significant reduction in RyR protein in muscle

Ultrasound-Based Detection of Fasciculations in Healthy and Diseased Muscles.

Involuntary muscle activations are diagnostic indicators of neurodegenerative pathologies. Currently detected by invasive intramuscular electromyography, these muscle twitches are found to be visible in ultrasound images. We present an automated computational approach for the detection of muscle twitches, and apply this to two muscles in healthy and motor neuron disease-affected populations. The technique relies on motion tracking within ultrasound sequences, extracting local movement information from muscle. A statistical analysis is applied to classify the movement, either as noise or as mor
