Perforating and penetrating globe injuries secondary to peribulbar and retrobulbar anaesthesia are often complicated by vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment. We describe the effectiveness of primary silicone oil tamponade in the repair of three perforated globes secondary to local anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery. Three patients with axial myopia had peribulbar and retrobulbar anaesthesia for extracapsular cataract extraction (two patients) and cryotherapy (one patient). All eyes sustained a vitreous haemorrhage obscuring the view to the fundus. Retinal detachments were detected by B-

Occupational blood exposure accidents (OBEAs) pose significant risks to healthcare workers, potentially exposing them to hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV. While most research focuses on hospital settings, this study assessed OBEA management in non-hospital contexts. Although our data predate the COVID pandemic, findings remain highly relevant, especially for healthcare professionals working outside hospital settings. A retrospective analysis of OBEA registry data (2006-2014) was conducted in a southern Dutch region. Data included demographics, profession, workplace, injury type, s

BACKGROUND: Oral healthcare practitioners (OHCPs) face risks for blood-borne viruses following blood exposure accidents (BEAs).
AIM: This study aimed to investigate occupational BEAs in Dutch oral healthcare clinics, explore BEA risk factors, and identify reasons for non-reporting.
METHODS: Two questionnaires were distributed: one prospective questionnaire was sent to BEA reporters who contacted a nationally operating reporting centre for occupational BEAs (issued before and after European legislation on recapping), and a retrospective questionnaire was sent to clinics which did not report a

The extent of occupational injuries among health care workers in central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is not documented. We sought to determine the incidence of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids in Congolese urban and rural hospitals in the previous year. Our data show high rates of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids, reflecting poor safety conditions for most Congolese health care workers.

Veterinarians are challenged by an imposing group of occupational hazards, including exposure to ionizing radiation, injury, infectious agents, and chemicals. In this paper, the health hazards in the typical veterinary practice are inventoried, and the risks of each are assessed. During the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in women entering the veterinary profession. Information is presented concerning the impact of various occupational hazards on the health of female practitioners and paraprofessionals, particularly in regard to the reproductive system. Many of the occu

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) pose a threat to healthcare workers (HCWs) by exposing them to bloodborne pathogens. Irrespective of safety devices and policies, knowledge, practice, and reporting gaps still exist. This study aimed to audit the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of HCWs regarding NSIs in a tertiary hospital and to determine the effects of educational and system-level interventions.
METHODS: A two-cycle quality-improvement audit was held at Port Sudan Teaching Hospital. Cycle 1 defined compliance at the baseline level through review of documents, staff surveys, and ob

BACKGROUND: The American College of Surgeons reports 88,320 intraoperative needlestick injuries (NSIs) per year, resulting in US $376 to US $2456 in costs per NSI. Engineered sharps injury prevention (ESIP) devices protect against NSIs. To our knowledge, no study has been published to date to demonstrate clinical effectiveness of an intraoperative ESIP device. Operative Armour is a wearable arm cuff that can be donned during surgical closure to allow surgeons to keep a suture pack and sharps protection container on their forearm.
OBJECTIVE: We characterize Operative Armour's ESIP device effec

Stellate ganglion block is utilized in the diagnosis and management of various vascular disorders and sympathetically mediated pain in the upper extremity, head and neck. The cervical sympathetic chain is composed of superior, middle, intermediate, and inferior cervical ganglia. However, in approximately 80% of the population, the inferior cervical ganglion is fused with the first thoracic ganglion, forming the stellate ganglion also known as cervicothoracic ganglion. The stellate ganglion lies medial to the scalene muscles, lateral to the longus coli muscle, esophagus and trachea along with t

BACKGROUND: Accidental perforation of the globe and intraocular injection of steroid is a potential complication of periocular injections. Final outcomes in eyes in which this complication has occurred have been reported to be unsatisfactory in the past. However, the advent of vitrectomy has altered their prognosis significantly.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was done of five cases of accidental intraocular steroid injection, treated by vitrectomy. Additional procedures involved treatment of retinal breaks (where required) with endolaser or transscleral cryopexy. Scleral buckling was done

The study aims were to describe a case series of occupationally acquired hepatitis C (HCV) infections in UK healthcare workers and examine factors associated with transmission using exposure data reported to the Health Protection Agency between July 1997 and December 2007. Fifteen reported cases of documented HCV seroconversion occurred after percutaneous exposure, the majority from hollow-bore needles used in the source patient's vein or artery and contaminated with blood or blood-stained fluid. The seroconversion rate was 2.2% (14/626). In multivariable analysis of healthcare workers with pe

Nurses are the healthcare professionals most at risk from neeldestick and sharps injuries, according to the latest figures from the RCN's EPINet project. During 2004, 1,990 injuries were reported from the 20 self-selecting participating sites. Nurses sustained 43 per cent of these injuries. Disposable syringes and needles were the most common equipment to cause injury. Although discouraged, 4 per cent of injuries occurred during recapping of needles. Just under a third of injuries were sustained by staff other than the original user of the sharp.

The exposure of third-year medical students to blood and blood products in the operating room was assessed with a questionnaire distributed at the end of their clerkship in surgery. Sixty-six (68%) of ninety-seven students reported having been exposed to blood in the operating room during their 3-month rotation in surgery. During the year there was a decrease in the exposure rate that correlated with the students' knowledge of universal precautions (r = .96). Consistent with this observation was a significant decrease in the exposure rate from the first quarter of the year to the last quarter

A retrospective review of all exposure injuries affecting members of the operative care line at a single university hospital between January 2000 and December 2007 was performed. A questionnaire survey on current status of adherence to barrier precautions was also completed by 164 staff members. Of 136 exposure injuries, 87 (64.0%) were in surgeons, and 49 (36.0%) were in scrub nurses. Surgeons were most commonly injured during suturing (49, 56%), followed by "handing over sharps" (7, 8%), whereas scrub nurses were most commonly injured during "counting and sorting of sharps" (15, 41%), follow
