Distraction osteogenesis is a bone creating procedure that can contribute materially to the treatment of Class II dento-skeletal disorders where the mandible is under-sized. Still, the serious commitments this treatment demands and the unpredictability of its occlusal results oblige practitioners to pinpoint precisely the indications for its use. We now believe that distraction osteogenesis can beneficially be employed for: 1--Adults with Class II malocclusions, a small mandible, and a lack of harmony between tooth and jaw size. This bone growing technique makes it possible to treat these pati

This study produced simple linear regression equations to be used for mixed dentition space analysis for males and females, and sexes pooled in a population living in northeastern Thailand. Measurements of teeth were made to within 0.01 mm on the dental casts of 215 boys and 215 girls (mean age 15.7 years). All dentitions were required to be free of any signs of dental pathology or anomalies. It was found that males had significantly larger teeth than females as represented by summations of mandibular incisor, canine, and premolar widths. ANOVA of regression indicated a close relationship betw

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and severity of root resorption of maxillary incisors caused by ectopically and normally erupting maxillary canines and to analyse factors influencing root resorption of incisors using cone beam computed tomography.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study sample comprised 59 patients with a total of 80 canines. Forty-six of the canines, in 37 patients, were defined as ectopic and 34 canines, in 22 patients, were defined as normal. The severity of root resorptions were analysed according to studies by Ericson and Kurol. Multiple logistics regression was used to evalu

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the inferior alveolar canal to the mandibular molar roots may pose a risk of injury during various dental surgeries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate age-related and gender-related changes by using cone-beam computed tomography images between the roots of the second molars, mandibular cortex, and the inferior alveolar canal.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-five patients (68 men, 87 women), 20 years and older, who had previous cone-beam computed tomography scans were enrolled in this study. The patients were subcategorized by gender and age (group I, <21 year

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of apical root resorption is usually based on routine radiographs. However, these methods are limited because the images reflect the superimposition of the whole root structure and can lead to underestimation of the extent of apical root resorption. In this study, we aimed to determine the lengths of the labial and lingual surfaces of incisors with apical root resorption and compare them with the longest radicular length obtained on sagittal images of cone-beam computed tomography, and to create a qualitative visual scale of the different patterns of apical root res

Leeway space preservation in the mixed dentition is a well-documented method of space management. In the mandibular arch it may be saved for utilisation in the correction of minor anterior crowding by the placement of a passive lower lingual arch (LLA) during the transition from the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition.

BACKGROUND: One of the major hurdles in clinical prosthodontics has been the selection and replacement of maxillary anterior teeth in the absence of pre-extraction records. The aim of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between intraoral and extraoral facial measurements that could assist dental practitioners in selecting esthetically appropriate maxillary anterior teeth in the absence of pre-extraction records.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used with a sample size of one hundred and twenty participants. A questionnaire was used to identify the sel

Within the context of preventing non-communicable diseases, the World Health Report (2002) and the WHO Global Oral Health Program (2003) put forward a new strategy of disease prevention and health promotion. Greater emphasis is placed on developing global policies in oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. The Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index does not meet new challenges in the field of oral health. Dental erosion seems to be a growing problem, and in some countries, an increase in erosion of teeth is associated with an increase in the consumption of beverages containing

Earlier studies on human teeth have provided proof of an expression of the X and Y chromosome genes in tooth crown growth. The Y chromosome promotes the growth of permanent tooth crown enamel and dentin, whereas the effect of the X chromosome seems to be restricted mainly on enamel formation. Also, there are evidences that both of the sex chromosomes are expressed in tooth root growth. The permanent tooth crowns in 47,XXY males or individuals with an extra X or Y chromosome show increased size compared to normal men, which is mainly due to increased enamel thickness, the dentin thickness is so

Skeletal and dental morphology, and related growth changes during a 3-year period following second permanent molar eruption, were compared in a group of 21 subjects who had no increase in lower arch crowding, with another group of 21 subjects whose lower arch crowding had increased by 1.0 mm or more during the same period. The crowding group showed a significantly greater increase in M3 space, forward movement of the second permanent molar and increase in the inter-incisal angle than the non-crowding group. None of the other parameters examined differed significantly.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relation exists between the presence of mandibular third molars (M3s) and mandibular angle and condylar fractures and whether the risk of these fractures varies with M3 position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in patients with mandibular fractures presenting to the oral and maxillofacial surgery service from April 2007 to March 2012. Data sources were patients' hospital charts and panoramic radiographs. Predictor variables were the presence and position of M3s. M3 position was based on the Pell an

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate possible links between competitive swimming during the growth phase and the development of the dentoalveolar arches.
METHODS: The study sample included 100 swimmers and a control group of 100 age-matched non-swimmers who had never practised swimming or related sports. Subjects who had had previous orthodontic treatment were excluded. Overjet, overbite, sagittal and transverse parameters, arch dimension, crowding and oral habits were recorded.
RESULTS: In the swimmers, there was a significantly higher frequency of molar symmetry (P=0.04), t

OBJECTIVE: To compare the root development and the growth rate of the mandibular third molar (M3 inf) in individuals where the M3 inf erupted vs individuals exhibiting M3 inf impaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serial standardized intraoral radiographs (Eggen technique) were taken annually of the mandibular third molar region from 132 subjects (71 male and 61 female) from 15 to 20 years of age. Based on the films, 264 lower third molars were classified into an eruption and an impaction group. Root development was recorded according to a quantitative method described by Haavikko (1970), and the

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to determine whether variations in the morphology, size, or shade of maxillary canines would influence perceptions of smile attractiveness in patients with canines substituted for missing maxillary lateral incisors.
METHODS: A smiling photograph of a hypodontia patient who had had orthodontic space closure with maxillary canines replacing the lateral incisors was digitally modified to create a bilaterally symmetrical image. Four groups of images were created, digitally altering canine gingival height, crown tip height, canine width, and canine shade. Thr
