Significant improvement in temporary dental rehabilitation by notable miniplate application in the hard palate for a patient with a large anterior maxillary defect: a case report/technique article.

UNLABELLED: The present report describes the application of a miniplate in the hard palate of a 36-year-old patient with a large anterior maxillary defect. The combination of orthodontic elastics with a titanium miniplate improved the stability of the prefabricated prosthesis. This structure retained the ointment gauze covering the wounds and maintained the facial contour. In addition, contracture deformity was prevented by insertion of the prefabricated prosthesis intraoperatively or immediately postoperatively. Furthermore, a soft diet could be ingested immediately postoperatively. The minip

Delayed eruption of premolars with periodontitis of primary predecessors and a cystic lesion: a case report.

Apical periodontitis after pulp therapy in a primary tooth can cause delayed eruption of the permanent successor. A case of bilateral delayed eruption of mandibular premolars is presented. The patient. a 13-year-old girl, was referred by her dentist. Oral findings showed that the right first and left second primary molars were retained. Other premolars had erupted. An orthopantomogram revealed apical periodontitis, affecting both retained primary molars. The right first mandibular premolar was impacted against the alveolar bone and root of the second premolar, and there was a large cystic lesi

Management of a permanent tooth after trauma to deciduous predecessor: an evaluation by cone-beam computed tomography.

Impaction of permanent teeth represents a clinical challenge with regard to diagnosis, treatment plan, and prognosis. There is a close relationship between deciduous teeth and permanent teeth germ, and any injury in the deciduous dentition may influence the permanent teeth eruption. The extent of the damage caused to the permanent teeth germ depends on the patient age at the time of injury, type of trauma, severity, and direction of the impact. Conventional radiographic images are frequently used for diagnosis; however, recent developments in three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems have enabled

Presurgical Infant Orthopedics: Sustainable Alternatives to Nasoalveolar Molding.

The conventional management of cleft patients involves presurgical infant orthopedics (PSIO), a strategy designed to align maxillary segments and improve nasal shape before definitive reparative surgery. Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) has been widely adopted for this purpose, but its drawbacks are threefold: it is costly and unavailable in many low-income countries and requires frequent follow-up. The aim of this article is to present practical PSIO alternatives that offer greater accessibility and sustainability while yielding comparable preoperative outcomes. The authors propose that the suggest

Characteristics, Diagnosis and Treatment of Compound Odontoma Associated with Impacted Teeth.

Compound odontoma is a malformation typical of young adults below the age of 20, with a slight preference for the male gender and the anterior region of the maxilla. Clinically asymptomatic, it can be detected during a radiological investigation in connection with the persistence of deciduous dental elements and the impaction of definitive ones. The treatment of choice is excisional surgery and recurrence is a rare event. The need for orthodontic therapy for impacted elements is usually not necessary because in most cases, odontomas are small, circumscribed lesions the size of a permanent toot

Idiopathic osteosclerosis mimicry of a tooth: case report.

This report presents two cases of idiopathic osteosclerosis involving the maxilla and mandible which were identified as a buccally impacted canine and a retained root, respectively, on clinical and plain radiographical examinations. Both patients were females who presented with hypodontia. Radiographic evaluation revealed solitary well-defined radiopaque masses with thickened cortical border. Both patients were undergoing orthodontic treatment and one was planned for a surgical traction of unerupted tooth prior to cone-beam CT assessment. In this report, we reviewed the clinical findings and e

Relationship between Craniofacial Skeletal Patterns and the Prevalence of Tooth Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth fractures are associated with various etiological factors, including occlusal stress. While science has shown associations between maximum bite force and craniofacial skeletal patterns, a direct link between skeletal morphology and the prevalence of tooth fractures has not been established. This study aimed to investigate whether sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, as determined by cephalometric analysis, are associated with the prevalence of tooth fractures in an adult orthodontic population. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 1001 adult orthodontic pat

The Multidisciplinary Management of A Fusion Involving a Permanent Maxillary Central Incisor and a Partially Erupted Supernumerary Tooth: A Case Report.

A 12-year-old female patient was initially referred to and examined in the oral surgery department at the School of Dentistry, Belfast following referral from her high street orthodontist. Reason for referral was extraction of two supernumeraries associated with the palatal aspect of the maxillary central incisors along with removal of two retained maxillary primary canines, to facilitate orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Although not clinically evident, dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed fusion between the right maxillary central incisor and adjacent palatal super

Extraction of First Permanent Molars in Children-A Comprehensive Review of History, Aim, Space Closure and Other Consequences.

Compromised first permanent molars (FPMs) in children pose major challenges for dentists and patients even in low-caries-risk populations. Whether due to caries or Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), compromised FPMs at an early age require careful treatment planning and timing of extraction, if necessary, to eventually have good space closure with healthy dentition. This comprehensive review explains the concept of early extraction of the FPMs in children and lists the results of published studies and systematic reviews regarding spontaneous or orthodontical space closure after the extrac

[Characterization of third molar extraction].

The aim of this study was to characterize the main indications, contraindications and prophylactic actions for third molar extraction according to the literature. The Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched using a total of 3 search keys, including publications up to 5 years old, in English or Spanish, with availability of full text. Eighteen articles were selected and showed that the most frequent indication for third molar extraction was the diagnosis of pericoronaritis, followed by distal cervical caries in the lower second molar, and root resorption in adjacent teeth and

Mixed-methods assessment of perceptions of mandibular anterior malalignment and need for orthodontic retreatment.

INTRODUCTION: Postorthodontic occlusal changes may stem from true relapse or may be a consequence of characteristic temporal changes. The aims of this research were to identify occlusal discrepancies related to the mandibular labial segment prompting a decision to undergo orthodontic retreatment. METHODS: A mixed-methods assessment was undertaken comprising a qualitative analysis involving focus groups exploring the relative importance of a range of occlusal features in the decision to undergo retreatment and investigating the motives for seeking retreatment. Quantitative assessment of these

Mucogingival interceptive surgery of buccally-erupted premolars in patients scheduled for orthodontic treatment. I. A 7-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival interceptive therapy in patients with buccally erupting teeth is performed to prevent the ectopic permanent tooth from developing periodontal lesions. The keratinized tissue entrapped between the erupting tooth and the deciduous tooth is retained to maintain a satisfactory width of the gingiva for the permanent tooth. The aim of the present study on buccally-erupted premolars scheduled for orthodontics was to evaluate the keratinized tissue width 3 months, 2 years, and 7 years subsequent to mucogingival interceptive therapy and orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Twenty-n
